Notes: Manufactured locally to feed the building boom following the Great Fire, the humble Chicago Common brick was used for the structural walls and exteriors of countless buildings in the region. Later, maverick architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright saw the beauty in this workaday material and brought it to a position of prominence. Our Chicago Common beer echoes this tradition, using readily available classic ingredients to create something new and delicious. Fermented with the unique lager yeast from San Francisco.

Pours reddish brown with a thin off-white head. Kind of opaque, slightly hazy.

Smell is rather bland, but some spoiled hay come through with roasted malt undertones.

Taste has some roasted malts, a spoiled hay like taste, wheat, grain, definite rye and a hint of spice on the finish. Bit of a nutty earthen flavor noted as the beer warms.

Feel is nice and smooth, medium carbonation.

Overall the spoiled hay aroma/taste is hard to get past. Otherwise its a solid beer.

Update 6/11/17:

Tried the new 16 oz cans fruit by great central brewing for distribution. Not much change in the appearance. The aroma did not have any of the spoiled hay notes from last time I had this. Much more nutty with some lager yeast coming through. Flavor was much nuttier and again that spoiled hay was not present. The hops present a spicier finish with some bitterness. This newer version of the beer is much better than prior iterations. Rating updated to reflect most recent tasting.

Pours a soft, soapy tan head. A caramel, toasted malt, grassy hop nose. Gorgeous burnt umber color is radiantly clear. Starts with a surprising bitterness; caramel and toasted malt mingle with a persistent hoppiness.

I have mixed feelings on this. There is a very distinct, overbearing, lingering, almost astringent bitterness that is quite unpleasant. That being said, there is a very nice toasted maltiness underneath that. If you wait a good minute or two between sips, it's pretty good, but that lingering bitterness is just a bit too much.

16 ounce can into a pilsner glass. Canned 7/26/17, had 9/26/17. Had about a year earlier on draft and gave it a 3.99 overall.

Pours a deep red amber, mostly clear, with a two inch head of creamy foam and a good amount of foamy lacing. Aromas of malt, caramel, rye, yeast, some brown sugar, earthy hops. The taste is pretty similar-caramel, malt, rye, some toffee, light brown sugar, earthy hops. A fair amount of bitterness throughout and in the aftertaste. Smooth, creamy, a really solid body, well carbonated.

Liked it better in the can, than on draft, but that’s probably because this really opens up when it warms. Most likely, I did not take that much time at the taproom. Lots of flavor and aroma, although not overly complex. Well worth a purchase if you like rye.

Solid lager with a rye hint. The beer is listed as rye beer so this is how I rated. Not enough rye to match that style, but for a lager it rates more favorably. Very malty, toffee and bitters. The feel is very thin though

2/25/17 (Oak Park IL) St. Giles Sports Trivia Fund Raiser - 16 oz pour in clear pint glass. Dark copper pour, thick tan head. Hops aroma, light rye and hops taste. Mild carbonation and easy drinking. Overall good beer, and look to try more Kinslahger offerings down the road.

Poured from a can into a pint glass. Pours deep reddish orange with a fluffy white head. Smells of sweet grain with rye spiciness. Tastes of full grain profile with slight rye spiciness. Beer is light bodied and very easy drinking, good carbonation. Overall a very good beer.
