Notes: This is the award-winning original American brown ale, first brewed as a holiday specialty, and now one of our most popular beers year-round. Northern English brown ales tend to be strong and dry, while southern English brown ales are milder and sweeter. Brooklyn Brown Ale combines the best of those classic styles and then adds an American accent in the form of a firm hop character and roasty palate. A blend of six malts, some of them roasted, give this beer its deep russet-brown color and complex malt flavor, fruity, smooth and rich, with a caramel, chocolate and coffee background. Generous late hopping brings forward a nice hop aroma to complete the picture. Brooklyn Brown Ale is full-flavored but retains a smoothness and easy drinkability that has made it one of the most popular dark beers in the Northeast.

This Brown Ale is nice in that it does have a little more hops than the typical brown ale, but it tastes a little off balanced between the hop and malt flavors coming together.

Appearance is a dark chocolaty brown color, a little more amber when held to light. Pours with a nice head that remains on the surface for a little while with some lacing.

Smell is chocolate malt up in front, balanced by its sweetness and a little hops coming off.

Taste is a little less than the aroma, its heavy chocolate grain up front quickly replaced with a slightly sour taste and hopiness.
Almost metallic copper penny.

Descent carbonation and smooth enough.

This beer pours a very dark brown, nearly black color, with a small, fizzy head. The aroma offers up coffee, dusty chocolate, and black currant. The flavor starts with stale coffee and chocolate, followed by an oaty cookie flavor, like a chocolate hob nob, as well as graham cracker, with just a touch of smoke on the end. The mouthfeel is very light. Overall I found this an unokeasantly stale, oddly smokey and roasty brown ale. Maybe I just prefer creamy browns, but this was not working for me.

Presentation: 12oz brown bottle. Freshness is clearly marked. Notes on the breweries origin and purity practices adorn an orange, brown and gold label.

Appearance: Leathery brown with a cream coloured head.

Smell: Sweet malt aroma with a little bit of caramel.

Taste: Rich mouthfeel with a smooth up-front caramel sweetness, changing into a defined crisp dryness (Burton-on-Trent style) that shadows the hop bitterness. This beer goes nutty in the middle and gradually finishes stronger.

Notes: A nice modern day American Brown Ale. On the dry side, but packed with a fullness of flavours.

Look: Pours a very deep, dark amber color.Tan colored head

Smell: The smell isn't very strong. But what I can pick up is a nutty, chocolate aroma.

Taste: Very nutty in flavor, with a very caramel and chocolate flavors coming in the end.

Feel: Pretty smooth, with a medium body.

Mediocre example of the style; thin; odd flavor on finish.

On Cask - at Stout in NYC.

No head, pour was an absolute mud/brown with a faint redish hue.

Taste - not at all like the bottle for me; much more malt flavor comes out with a stronger finish and no kick.

Smell was almost non-existent; but if you really try to smell it - it was a decent malty aroma.

Overall it is still a beer that you can rely on with a very easy taste to enjoy and clean finish.

a nice brown color with full tan head that falls rather quickly leaving little lace.

Smell of sweet caramel with a roasted malt aroma.

Noticed a slight hoppy taste right up front followed by a sweet roasted malt flavor with hints of caramel, chocolate and coffee. The pleasant roasted flavor lingers through a rather clean finish.

Thin and smooth in the mouth with a nice amount of carbonation.

A pleasant brown ale. Nothing overly special but very nice and highly drinkable.

Pours a darkish brown color with a one finger head. The aroma is faint and of caramel malt along with a slight dark fruit. The taste is of a caramel malt and roasted malt backbone with some nuttiness to it. In the middle there is a slight dark fruit character and it finishes with a slight citrus hop bite. The mouthfeel is moderately carbonated and slightly creamy. The drinkability is good, a very smooth and easy drink. The nose was a little disappointing but the flavor really comes through to make you want another.

12oz bottle poured into pint glass.
Nice looking brown ale, with amber edging and good clarity. Full cream colored head with a hard pour. Smells quite sweet with alot of caramel and brown sugar. Just a bit of roasted malt and coffee scent to balance out the nose. Also noticed a bit of a metallic note. Taste is alot more balanced, with the roasted flavors coming through. Even a little dark chocolate and some earthy hop flavor, balancing out the caramel and molasses. The metallic element is a little more evident in the palate. It's not harsh, but not pleasant either. Mouthfeel is creamy on the tongue with a mildly dry finsh. A likeable and drinkable brew from Brooklyn.

Brooklyn Brown Ale pours a dark espresso brown with a generous mocha colored head. This brew presents a nose of roasted malts with a smoky aftertaste. Sweet malts alongside soft hops; well-balanced and very drinkable. Interesting in that Sam seems to be trending to utilizing a smoky component to some of their products recently, this adding a needed complexity to some of their otherwise typical products. No complaints here!

Best by date of May 2015

Appearance - Pours a chestnut brown with a khaki colored finger width head. Good retention, eventually dying to a thin layer of surface suds and spotty lacing around the glass.

Smell - Earthy with light nutty notes and a strong floral hoppiness.

Taste - Follows the nose. Light nuttiness with a slightly sour bite. Floral hop character. Finish has a vague, empty chocolate flavor to go with everything else. Odd flavors that don't necessarily mesh.

Mouthfeel - Light bodied with moderate carbonation. Thin, empty finish.

Overall - Eh, one of the more disappointing craft browns I've had. What's with the sourness? Best by date was still well within range, so it's somewhat baffling.
