Style: American Amber / Red Lager

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.20%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
In the late 1800’s Brooklyn was one of the largest brewing centers in the country, home to more than 45 breweries. Lager beer in the “Vienna” style was one of the local favorites. Brooklyn Lager is amber-gold in color and displays a firm malt center supported by a refreshing bitterness and floral hop aroma. Caramel malts show in the finish. The aromatic qualities of the beer are enhanced by “dry-hopping”, the centuries-old practice of steeping the beer with fresh hops as it undergoes a long, cold maturation. The result is a wonderfully flavorful beer, smooth, refreshing and very versatile with food. Dry-hopping is largely a British technique, which we’ve used in a Viennese-style beer to create an American original.

L — Deep clarified copper body with a finger of white head produced with aerated pour. Good retention and some lacing
S — Grain, husk, hint of sulphur. Very mild
T — Good amount of grassy, herbaceous hoppiness for a lager. Also getting some doughiness from the malts, a bit of lemon, and a slight metallic quality
F — Crisp and refreshing. Not as easy drinking as I like my lagers (Munich Helles for the win!), but not too offensive either. Medium- mouthfeel, medium+ carb.

Brooklyn Lager is another old standby of mine. It's been years since I've had it now, but I used to drink it frequently so this should be an easy one to review. Technically, I believe their description that this is a "Vienna Lager" rather than an "American Amber" is probably correct. IE its got a bit more complexity and punch than what I'd call a strictly American Amber. While this site puts Bluepoint and Yuengling Traditional as top alternatives, I'd say this is closer to Sam Adams. No matter, I think all 4 can be pretty appealing to the same audience. I know they usuually are for me.

Look, its a nice dark brown, clear, not cloudy. The head is usually pretty healthy though not quite as thick as on the Brooklyn Pils

Smell is of sweet malt, yeast, almost woody, with a strong counterpoint from the hops. I find the hops to be more deep than floral, and the overall smell to be kind of like bread or maybe sourdough pretzels.

Taste is good. Sweet, malty, slightly thick, counter-balanced by a strong, dry, slightly woody, almost tannic hop bitterness. Overall its fairly pleasant and balanced, but I personally would like Brooklyn Lager even better if it were a bit less bitter. To me the taste starts sweet, then turns kind of bready, then ends up dry and kind of oaky.

Feel, I rate sligthly below average. This is a sessionable beer, but its not as easy to knock an endless number of these back on a hot day as say Becks or Yuengling, or even Killians.

Overall this is an above average beer. Its not my very favorite for the style (I gravitated towards Yuengling Traditional and Sam over this, and would also probably add Bluepoint now), but its still very good. And brewed from more expensive ingredients than Yuengling (IE 2 row barley only with no corn, and imported hops). So its definitely wortha try for anyone who likes darker lagers.

Look - poured from a 12 oz bottle. Amber red in color, two-finger head with nice lacing retention.
Smell - biscuit, malts, and some honey-like sweetness, although not much hop presence. In line with the Vienna lager style.
Taste - a lot of malts, but unlike in the smell, a distinct floral hoppiness is definitely present. beer finishes with robust toasted malts/bread
Feel - medium bodied and medium-high carbonation. appropriate ABV for the style at 5.2%
Overall - The flagship beer of the brewery, and a lot of good aspects about it. A tasty beer easily enjoyed by all.

Pours a darker amber to orange color, with a froth, medium sized head.

Smells of fresh opened toast, honey, orange peel and a note of lime zest.

Has a very refreshing, well carbonated lighter to medium body.

Tastes of whole grain bread, sweet toffee and a surprisingly dry, herbal hop appearance. Turns a little sweeter then with caramel and dried oranges among an uprising lemon bitterness. Finishes with more bready, toffee malts and a zingy hop bitterness, which coats the tongue surprisingly long.

A great tasting hybrid between a classic lager and an american pale ale. Sweet and bitter, tasty and versatile, extremely well balanced.
