Style: American Amber / Red Lager

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.20%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
In the late 1800’s Brooklyn was one of the largest brewing centers in the country, home to more than 45 breweries. Lager beer in the “Vienna” style was one of the local favorites. Brooklyn Lager is amber-gold in color and displays a firm malt center supported by a refreshing bitterness and floral hop aroma. Caramel malts show in the finish. The aromatic qualities of the beer are enhanced by “dry-hopping”, the centuries-old practice of steeping the beer with fresh hops as it undergoes a long, cold maturation. The result is a wonderfully flavorful beer, smooth, refreshing and very versatile with food. Dry-hopping is largely a British technique, which we’ve used in a Viennese-style beer to create an American original.

This is the first time I have ever tried this classic beer of the Craft Beer movement. I purchased an individual bottle at a Total Wine & More in Roseville, MN as Brooklyn does not distribute to Wisconsin at this time. The bottle mentions “Best before May 2018”so this is a few days older than the brewery would like.

Brooklyn Lager pours a clear amber hue with a thick one fingered head that leaves behind a nice lacing.

Sadly the aroma seems pretty muted with a bit of caramel and a spiciness from the hops.

The flavor more than makes up for it though. It is very smooth with a nice subtle hint of caramel and bitterness from the hops. The finish is very smooth as well.

Overall this is a great Vienna Lager. I think I would still rank Sam Adams Boston Lager as a better example of the style but this is still a fantastic beer

Pours a darker amber to orange color, with a froth, medium sized head.

Smells of fresh opened toast, honey, orange peel and a note of lime zest.

Has a very refreshing, well carbonated lighter to medium body.

Tastes of whole grain bread, sweet toffee and a surprisingly dry, herbal hop appearance. Turns a little sweeter then with caramel and dried oranges among an uprising lemon bitterness. Finishes with more bready, toffee malts and a zingy hop bitterness, which coats the tongue surprisingly long.

A great tasting hybrid between a classic lager and an american pale ale. Sweet and bitter, tasty and versatile, extremely well balanced.

Pours a thin but lingering off white head that leaves little lacing. Color is clear amber with mild streaming carbonation. Aroma of floral, citrus, and pine hops with yeasty bread dough. Mouthfeel is light, slightly sticky, with a somewhat damp finish. Flavors herbs, citrus rind, floral, toasted bread. A very good vienna lager.

Crystal clear. A little light for the style. Not much on the nose. Average taste, a little watery. Overall, average at best.

Best By July 2018
12 oz. bottle poured into a tumbler style pint glass.

Reddish gold and brite. Clear with a one finger whitish head.
Weak nose, yeast caramel malt and a hint of white grape.
Slightly bitter, floral/ earthy hops and malty Carmel are the mainstays.
Crisp with a medium body.
I think is a solid, drinkable amber though maybe a bit on the heavy side.

I agree with gvickery that this is not an amber. I really enjoyed this lager. As for as lagers go I give this a 5/5. Lot of flavour for a lager. I feel people are really rating beers wrong. You might enjoy or prefer other styles of beer more and thus give lagers worst ratings but I feel you should rate the style (out of 5) for that particular style compared against other beers of that style. Instead people automatically give lagers lower ratings just because of the style.

I wouldn’t call this an amber, the color is slightly darker than gold. I couldn’t detect much of any smell. I got this in a mixed six pack from Kroger and it was very out of date (Nov 17). I’ll remember that, Kroger. Even so, it had a good balanced flavor leaning a little to the malty side. It had a ever so slight skunk to it that I attribute to the out of date. It feels heavy to me, I could enjoy a couple but more than that would really fill me up. It’s well made and something I’ll get again.

Aroma of biscuit-dough, solid maltiness, a bit of caramel, some light citrus fruit, floral hops. Taste us more sweet than bitter. I found that it left kind of a soapy aftertaste. Pours a nice amber, light medium body, with medium to stale carbonation. Solid, but could have been fresher - doesn't really hold up all that well, making its way to Europe, stashed away in supermarkets.
