Poured into tulip, lemon yellow color with small rim of head, nice citrus aroma mixed with funk of yeast aroma, nice crisp mouth feel with predominant lemon flavor with some herbal notes mixed in. Really good, refreshing summer beer

Label states : "Brooklyn Sorachi Ace. 7.2% ABV." Best by date :July, 2015 ; Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tulip glass.

Appearance : A hazy, unfiltered light gold with average carbonation ; head was about 1 inch of tight, tiny white bubbles which subsided gradually. This is a saison, but similar resemblance to a Belgian golden ale.

Smell : The Belgian yeast dominates for me, followed by hints of lemon and a slight amount of clean alcohol.

Taste : After the first sip, I received a one-two punch - first by the tartness of lemon,
then by the resulting dryness. After a few moments, the carbonation and the citrus-like acidity tickle the tongue. The hops are present, but so well incorporated that it's difficult for me to separate that aspect from the whole.

Feel : Light and dry, not unlike a champagne. Definitely not dense or heavy.

Overall : A wonderful addition to the Brooklyn Brewery lineup, and definitely one of the best Springtime saisons I've tasted. Would pair well with light cheeses, fruit plates, or perhaps steamed mussels with lemon and butter. I highly recommend trying.

What a cool beer! I was not sure what to expect, this was my first interaction with Sorachi Ace, but boy was I impressed. A delicious lemony citrus hop profile and a bready malt that was subtle but supported this unique hop. Definitely a beer to pick up when you come across it!

Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #53 (June 2011):

Weathered but clear golden color. Massive head is produced from the expressive and high level of carbonation. Very aromatic with suggestions of Asian pear, faint jasmine, lavender, hibiscus and green peppercorn. Smoothness is very deep here, which helps with telling the beer’s story. Lighter body is fluffed by the bottle conditioning, adding a huge refreshing quality. Fresh herbs with some dried fruit; yeasty and medicinal, cracker maltiness and earthy. Nearly bone-dry finish and not too far off from being an epic brew.

A gorgeous, hazy straw color. Looks like you could drink a million. Scent is subdued: lemon, lemongrass. Taste follows the nose, though the lemon is ramped up a bit more, which makes it almost too drinkable. It's got a light, effervescent texture that also makes it hard to drink slow. It's not one of those out-there, unusual saisons, but it's superbly well balanced and, did I say it? extremely drinkable.

Brooklyn Sorachi Ace comes in a fairly grand bottle and, sure enough, has the swanky appearance to match: resplendent golden in colour, with vivacious bubbles and an ultra-plush head, this looks like it costs twice what it actually does (and it's certainly not cheap!) Pour in the last couple ounces, however, and it looks like a glass of oatmeal.

Corked and caged and re-fermented in the bottle like Champagne, Sorachi Ace also has a bouquet that lightly mimics and definitely rivals the vintage bubbly of a good house. Use of the same yeast has resulted in a hint of wet earth, strong breadiness and the usual orchard fruit notes, though hops have imparted plenty of bright citrus and green herb qualities.

Sorachi Ace has a character that is in many ways reminiscent of a Chardonnay left on lees. There are remarkably similar lemon and apple flavours and it has the full, creamy texture to boot. Seriously, I'd guess this was barrel-aged if I didn't know any better - there's even hints of vanilla and cedar that accompany citrus peel in the finish.

It's impressive that the beer can feel so rich in spite of such ultra-zippy, high-octane carbonation. Champagne bubbles tend to make for a lighter, sharper mouthfeel - which this largely does have - but there's still plenty of weight to this sucker. The hops also provide some uniquely savory notes in the form of dill and lemon verbena.

Sorachi Ace is exactly the kind of distinctive, high-quality offering you'd expect from a producer with the illustrious reputation of Brooklyn Brewery. It delivers good value and rolls tasty malts and exceptionally vibrant hoppiness into a very unique drinking experience. Nevermind trying to box this into 'Saison' or 'Belgian IPA' categories - this is it's own beer. And it's definitely worth grabbing.

12oz bottle, BB JUL.2015
A - thick, persistent, creamy, white head; hazy pale golden body
S - zesty nose with lemongrass, spicy coriander, yeast
T - similar to aroma with spicy yeast, grass, lemon zest, faint lime zest, wheaty malt
M - medium body, semi-bitter, very dry finish
O - really great use of accentuating the Sorachi hop. I really liked this. You have to like a dry finish to enjoy this one. It might be the dryest finishing beer I've ever had.

Very, very bizarre; while it's in your mouth it's got a cloying, banana Laffy Taffy sort of profile, but one you swallow there's a big kick of black pepper bitterness. The lemonade-yellow color does nothing to dispel the oddness.

It's growing on me.

Pours a cloudy maize color. 1/4 inch head of a white color. Decent retention and great lacing. Smells of pale malt, yeast, slight coriander, herbs, and a hint of wood. Fits the style of a Saison / Farmhouse Ale. Mouth feel is smooth and clean, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of slight fruit, hint of alcohol, hint of liquor, slight piney hops, pale malt, and a hint of wood. Overall, good complexity, subtle body, but great blend and feel.

Beautiful unfiltered golden look. Smell is yeast dominated, to me it smells like bread after the first prove before you shape it ... raw bready yeast smell? Palate starts off that way before citrus hops come in with some nice flavours and then bitterness. Had this one from a six pack (very fresh in NY), but also paired with a clam bake/chowder dish at Eleven Madison Park, just before it closed recently. A classy beer for sure. Saison not one of my favourite styles, but this one i like a lot.

Looks: I love hazy light honey colored beer
Smell: Not a lot on the nose compared with other Saisons
Taste: Good carbonation not a lot of intrigue here
Feel: Good
If I wanted a Saison I'm not sure this is what I would buy

A solid 4. Pours a light straw yellow, bubbly with a nice creamy white foam. The nose is of light citrus, sweet grasses, hay and spice. Excellent citrus character, lemons and orange. Belgian yeast, light bubble gum and pepper there too. Light to medium mouthfeel with a dry champagne like finish. I like saisons and I liked this one.

A- Yellow, clear-ish. I actually thought they poured miller light by accident, except that it had nicer lacing and was just a tad cloudier.
S- Lemony and fragrant, with a faint bit of orange and cloves. Yeasty.
T- Very lemony and floral. The citrus jumps right out, as does some hopiness....reminding me that looks can definitely be deceiving.
M- Pleasant, refreshing with just a bit of zing and some hop viscosity. Very well balanced.
D- Good, you could stick with this beer anytime and enjoy it (but watch out it's 7.5%)

On tap at the Diamond Club for Brooklyn's ghost bottle night. This one was served in a pint glass.

Sorachi Ace pours a clear dark lemon (I have a hunch I'll be typing that word a lot here) yellow. There's about two fingers of fluffy white foam capping the beer. Head retention is solid, and the beer leaves sheets and sheets of lacing stuck to the glass. The nose is an absolute lemon bomb, reminds me of making fresh squeezed lemonade at work. There's also a bit of pale malt sweetness, but it's very much an ancillary note. The flavor takes that foundation and layers in a subtle clove-pepper spiciness to keep things interesting. It was easy to pick out after having had Brooklyn Radius early in the night, as I'm guessing it comes from the brewery's house Belgian strain, and it's featured more prominently in Radius. The body is impressively light for a beer approaching 8%ABV, the dryness being the mark of a well brewed Belgian style beer. The carbonation is active and effervescent and really helps carry the unique flavor contributed by the hop that gives this beer it's name. I'm thrilled that I'll be able to pick up Sorachi Ace in bottled form any time I want going forward, it's a well made, fairly original saison.
