Brooklyn PilsnerBrooklyn Pilsner

Brewed by:
Brooklyn Brewery
New York, United States

Style: German Pilsner

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.10%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Brooklyn Pilsner is a refreshing golden lager beer, brewed in the style favored by New York’s pre-prohibition brewers. In the 1840’s, the pilsner style emerged from central Europe to become the world’s most popular style of beer. Like its ancestors, Brooklyn Pilsner is traditionally brewed from the finest German two-row barley malts. German-grown Perle and Hallertauer hops provide a crisp, snappy bitterness and fresh, floral aroma. The flavor of the malt comes through in the finish. We ferment Brooklyn Pilsner at cool temperatures, and then give it a long, gentle maturation (lagering), which results in a beer of superior complexity and smoothness. We believe that you will find there to be none finer. Unlike mass-marketed so-called pilsners, Brooklyn Pilsner does not contain cheap fillers such as corn or rice, nor does it contain any preservatives or stabilizers. Brooklyn Pilsner is the real thing.

One of the best pilsner beers I've had. Unique in flavor and supreme drinkability. I haven't seen a six pack of this yet, but when I do, I will definitely get it.

This is a REALLY good German Pilsener. I live in Hong Kong and we have quite a few Pilseners from Germany and Czechoslovakia to choose from but very few beers from the US. I love the style and have to say that this beer is very true to it. It has a lot of that clean, pilsener hop flavor that I love. A bit more than say a Konig, Krombacher, Bitburger or even a Rothaus, which is my favorite. The malts and hops are very well balanced and I highly recommend this beer even to a European or "authentic" pilsener fan such as myself. I was shocked by how good this beer is. Highly recommended.

I liked this one. Hazy sunflower gold in the glass, the low white head has left me with just a ring of froth in the glass. Aroma delivers, with dried grass and a hint of spiceyness. Mouthfeel is good and medium, carbonation is small and not overwhelming. Tastewise the perfume of dried grass carries through. Small burst of citrusy hops in the finish. Delivers what it should, nice American example I can't believe I haven't reviewed up till this point.

Hazy yellow-straw color with a tall pillowy off-white head, and nice carbonation. Nice earthy hop and grainy malt aromas. Nice grainy malts up front; balanced well by earthy hops. Not at all sweet or bitter but does have a nice lingering hop finish. Medium-light bodied and crisp.

Solid - better than I remember with slightly different stats on their website than before.

Ah, a great beer I hardly ever have anymore. I'd rate this over their lager, which is thick and great, but a little too heavy for ths style while this is a great take on a classic style. This beer pours a medium gold with a solid, lacy-white head that clings to the glass. Fresh grains, malt and yard clippings are the aromas with a little hoppy smell in the background. Taste is crisp, dry and biscuity with enough hops there to make you notice; refreshing without being watery or too sweet. A great beer you could drink all day.

Very nice pils to be had. Harder to find in my area than the lager, but worth the hunt.

It pours a clear golden, white head with good lace to follow. Active carbonation that keeps the glass moving.

The aroma is slight citric hop with an earthy malt undertone.

The taste is crisp ans clean front and now. Citric hop of lemon thats well balanced with malt highlights.

A creamy soft mouthfeel aids the amazing ease of drink and the flavors entertain the taste buds.

Easy to drink, like I say if you don't mind alittle flavor in your pils.

Chilled Brooklyn pilsner was poured from a bottle into a pint glass, mid-June of 2018. This beer has a slight attractive aroma. The head is not very long lasting, there is minimal lacing. The body is a healthy light gold. Now for the good part. The flavor is a memorable hop-forward experience. The mild malt and european hop character are well integrated. There is a healthy bittterness that lingers after swallowing. This might be my favorite Pilsner style beer in the New York City metro area.

Poured this German Pilsener from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. This Pilsener poured a slightly hazy golden color. It produced a nice white head, retention is below average, lacing is minimal. The aroma is comprised of sweet grain and a touch of hops. The beer is very crisp, a very nice bite, there is some citrusy lemony hops in the forefront, followed by bitter malt and a slightly dry finish that leaves you wanting to take another sip. Very nice example of a pilsner, according to the label, an attempt at a pre-prohibition German lager. Great craft brewed Pilsner. This is the kind of beer that if you drink would make me inclined to pick up a hitch-hiker. Bob Evans anyone?

Had this on-tap at the Brooklyn Brewery.

A: Fluffy white head with good staying power. Transparent, slightly yellow, off-amber body. Good lacing.

S: Hoppiness: Piney and inviting. Slight malt maybe. Smells like beer to me.

T: Complex hoppy flavors with a nice malt aftertaste to balance. A hoppy bitterness finishes it off.

M: Pretty full. Mouth watering from the hops.

D: Pleasant bitter aftertaste bites into the score a little.

Getting some herbal hops some slight lemon smells from them as well. The taste is a sweet herbal bitterness ending with a fruitness. The malts a doughy in flavor and sweet. The mouthfeel on the beer is really good for a Pilsner not thin at all for the style.

Its very easily drinkable and has complex hop flavors that are subtle than pronounced consisting of lemon herbal earthy and a peppery taste as well. Its a crisp mild but there bitterness from the hops and a tasty malt background that makes it easy to drink.

I was really surprised by this beer and is definitely better than I had thought

This is such a well balanced beer and I was not usually a pilsner fan years ago. This is the one that started the change for me when it was introduced.

A huge and rocky head that stays forever it seems and slowly fades to a light covering. Tons of lace all along the glass as I drink. Looks like a good triple from all the decoration. A lightly hazed gold with gentle carbonation.

Smell is sweet malt and husky grains with a good dose of floral and spicy hops. A sweet and yeasty dinner roll doughiness.

Taste is superbly balanced. Clean and crisp malt with a dry spicy hops and good clean bittering in the finish. Dry with a cereal grain flavor as tell. A light mineral taste that flows into saaz hops. Just a touch of grapefruit skin. Very clean. A crisp, dry and refreshing feel is complimented by a tingly carbonation the has a touch of creaminess at times

Such a great quaffer. Right behind a hefe for sessioning.

Pours a clear, pale yellow with a touch of nutty caramel color to it. Great bone white two finger head the pour that slyly recedes to a ring o' foam around the top of the beer. The aroma is a nice, clean hop lime and some brisk, dry malts. The taste has a soft touch of dry toasted bread. The hops impart some floral notes and some gentle earthy grassy that blends goes well with the malts and boost up the palate and drinkability and sessionablilty of this beer. I would love if this beer was available at Lunar all year round. Very good American/German pilsner.

Pours a light straw color, with barely a 1/4 inch head. Smell is straw, citrus, grass. Light body, nice mouthfeel with good carbonation. Taste is clean, refreshing, a little cidery in a good way. Some malty sweetness, a little grassy hops and some citrus hop flavor, but not assertive. Finish is extremely clean. The more I drink it, the more I like it. Not a big pilsner fan, but this I will buy again. Very enjoyable!

I like brooklyn beers. this one is not my favorite, but its a really nice pilsner. The difference between the bottled and on tap brews is incredibly different though! SOOO much better on tap!

The look is nice-ish. Doesn't look like a beer to crave, but it does look refreshing; when it comes to pilasters in the summer, that's perfect.

The smell is nice. reminds me of the smell of the brewery.

The taste, is pretty straight forward, but exceptional. nice hop flavor, little malt, nice earthiness to it too!

Drinkability seems to go a long way with this one. I could drink this all day if I needed to (or wanted to :) ). Basically, it's a great beer to keep in the fridge or best to get on tap at the brewery!

12 oz. bottle poured into pilsener
(best by October 2015 printed on bottleneck)

L: cloudy yellow-gold, 1-inch head of offwhite foam ... dark foam for a pilsener; in fact, dark all-around for a pils ... the brew is borderline gold (though shows no amber); nice bit of sticking at top of head; clears up quickly, showing a nice river of bubbles flying up the middle of the column; no lacing but pretty thick off-white collar and beautiful light skin on top as the bubbles churn and churn to the top

S: very grainy, some cracker, hint of lemon ... something quite sweet ... lightest hint of grass hops that have a lemon-peel/citrus leaning; really sweetens out halfway in, getting closer to bready malt yet still with a slight tart citrus note in it

T: nice grain and earth hop mix with some cracker-malt flavor adding some sweetness ... the hops give off a perfect little bite, not overly bitter but enough to dance off the sweet malt and grain flavor; almost citrusy/lemon tart at times ... even orange the way it mixes with the sweetness

F: crisp, light, easy to drink but not watery

O: wonderful stab at one of my favorite styles with plenty of hop and malt flavor, neither overpowering the brew; the malt sweetness isn't the full Old World bready kind, but it's enough to tame the hop bite and make the brew quite tasty. arguably a unique mix of flavors yet all of them are well within the borders of the style without expanding into an overly hopped-up Americanized version. I'll be drinking this at least a few times a year. great brew!

Glad to see this Pilsner now in a 12 oz. can. Thanks to Brooklyn Brewery, this is an excellent Pilsner amongst a sea of IPAs on store shelves. Light bodied but plenty of hop taste. I think it's preferable to their more widely distributed (at least in my area) Lager. I enjoy IPAs but also the alternative of a well-done historic style such as this product.
