Washington's PorterWashington's Porter
Notes: Formerly General Washington's Tavern Porter

Detailed in a letter from the General to his officers during the war, Washington’s recipe employed molasses to aid fermentation and give rich caramel notes to this robust, roasty ale. The recipe reflected his admiration for Philadelphia-style porters, especially those brewed by Robert Hare (whose original brewery stood just blocks from where ours is now). Our Tavern Porter, inspired by Washington’s, is dark, smooth, and complex with just a hint of dried fruit in the finish.

My absolute favorite beer I've ever tried. This porter puts Guinness to absolute shame.

Look: IT pours a very dark brown with a rich head bubbling up- no "gizmo" required. Head is thick and a light brown color, not white. Lingers forever.

Smell: Smells like hints of coffee and chocolate and wonder. And a moderate alcohol smell.

Taste: This is where it really knocks it out of the park. VERY rich flavors. The coffee, coco, and the malt of the beer are perfectly bouqueted but offset enough to not be cloying. Pleasant aftertaste that lingers.

Feel: Thick and rich, in a good way. The carbonation is just right to avoid it feeling like oil, but no more.

Overall: Try this beer. This is another fantastic offering from my new favorite brewery.

A: Dark brown with a slight red hue. Virtually no head, maybe a millimeter of white.
S: Smells of dark coffee, rich cocoa, roasted pecans and walnuts, toffee
T: Tastes like it smells with a deep coffee flavor coming through in the beginning (with the help of the nose) and the after taste. Even a faint taste of butterscotch within the java flavor along with dark syrup notes
M: I was almost worried that my beer was flat because there was almost no head or lacing to the beer, but once you taste it you realize there is a carbonated bite to the porter that makes it refreshing and deep and flavorful. Still wish there was a little more fullness to this porter
O: Other porters I have had are either too strong in the coffee, chocolate and other complex flavors. This beer is very drinkable and has more simple flavors than many other porters. But, this beer still has a delicious balance of more simple ingredients that makes it very drinkable but still tasty

Pours a dark brown color with a modest khaki cream head that leaves a little splash of lacing.
Sweet and inviting aroma of chocolate and molasses. The malt profile is nutty, biscuity and lightly roasted.
Smooth and creamy with a medium body. Gentle carbonation and highly drinkable. Predominantly sweet and aligned with the aroma; chocolate, molasses, light roast, nutty and biscuity. There is some dryness in finish. Good balance as well, provided by a mild woody hops bitterness.
A delightful and flavorful no frills porter.

Yet another brew courtesy of mymrnngjckt. Cheers Kevin!

Appearance: Poured from the bottle into my DFH glass, this brew is surprisingly dark. This actually reminds me more of a robust stout than a porter. There's not a single beam of light getting through this bad boy. The pour was a bit rough, there was about a half inch worth of tan colored head that faded quickly, reducing itself down to only a thin ring around the beer. Lacing is pretty good, not really sticky but very thick and soapy.

Smell: Sweet, a mix of a little chocolate, a little coffee, and just a hint of dark fruit. Nothing is really standing out, everything is pretty well balanced.

Taste: Nothing really exploding on the palate here, getting some bitter chocolate with a bit of under-roasted coffee. There is a slight sweet, dark fruit kind of flavor hiding in the background, but it's very subtle at best.

Mouthfeel: Nice body, creamy, smooth, carbonation is perfect. Very well done here.

Drinkability: Not a bad porter, though I was expecting a bit more oomph. All of the flavors are very well balanced, though they are a bit subdued. I would say that if you are looking for an easy drinking porter, this is your beer. If you're looking for a "punch you in the face" kind of porter, there are better choices out there.

A - poured to a slight head that was not retained. almost to a color of stout.

S - very close to a stout w/ dark notes of chocolate.

T - very flavorful. better then most porters but then it tasted closer to a stout (a good thing)

M - carbonation just about right

O - worth revisiting this.

Thanks to mymrnngjckt for the local extra!

Pours with a nice foamy tan head. Fairly dark body with a reddish-brown tint. The head reduces leaving a nice film and a touch of lacing here and there.

The nose is sweet. Picking up a hint of lactose, light smoke, and roasted, chocolate flavored malt.

The flavor is a nice balance of unfermented lactose sweetness and roasted dark malt. A faint hint of smoke on the malt and maybe a touch of dark chocolate. Fairly simple, but nice.

Mouthfeel is smooth with a touch of dark malt bitterness. Carbonation is good, maybe a bit prickly. Body is on the lighter side, but still good for a regular porter.

Drinkability is good. Nothing stands out or is complex about this porter, but its still an easy drinking beer with some good flavor. Easy to put back a pint or two.

A-Deep dark but clear brown with a thin, khaki light brown head leaving broken rings.

S-roasted yet sweet nutty tones

T- roasted nuts and malt with a hint of sour tang (think a faint hint of Baltic porter). faint hints of other complex flavors (sugar, spice and everything nice) found in each sip.

M- for a porter, very light bodied and smooth. would have liked a bit more body.

D- very good porter with more drinkability then the more heavily bodies porters im used to. excellent little tastes of complexity.

Appearance: Deep dark brown; 1/4" of off-white foam, turns into fine lacing

Aroma: Sweet; molasses/chocolatey character in the nose

Taste: Dark chocolate, semi-sweet. Little hop character.

Mouthfeel: Very smooth, quite boozy

Ap. Very dark w/ a coarse off white head. (Sitting next to a Guiness with a very finely textured head.)
Sm. Mostly molassas with malt, chocolate and coffee in there too.
Ta. Strong molassas, but still a very pleasant and mild beer. A very serious beer
Mf. Very thick and sweet and smooth.
Dr. A really good porter, but one will do it. It's too thick and heavy to have a bunch. I followed it with a Smithwick's.

This is a fairly strong, dark porter with a nice, rugged brownish head and good lacing. I liked the maltiness and full body. Not a bad choice, served on tap for Valentine's Day (and on Presidents' Day weekend). I would definitely get it again.
