Style: English Porter

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Detailed in a letter from the General to his officers during the war, Washington’s recipe employed molasses to aid fermentation and give rich caramel notes to this robust, roasty ale. The recipe reflected his admiration for Philadelphia-style porters, especially those brewed by Robert Hare (whose original brewery stood just blocks from where ours is now). Our Tavern Porter, inspired by Washington’s, is dark, smooth, and complex with just a hint of dried fruit in the finish.

A sweet porter beer. I smell and taste licorice. Very dark cherry red color. Beer is enjoyable to drink. I find this beer to be better on tap then from a bottle. I will get this beer again.

Pours a little flat, very deep dark red with a wispy white head.

The aroma features strong nodes of dark chocolate and roasted barley along with lots of sweet, sticky molasses.

Tastes sweet up front, like milk chocolate, caramel, and molasses. This gives way to a lightly bitter and very malty middle where the chocolate turns dark and the molasses gets a little spicy. Finishes surprisingly clean, with some bitter barley and hops lingering.

This is an older-school craft beer based on a very charming gimmick. It reminded me of something I would have enjoyed quite a bit in 2005 or so, and it perhaps gets a couple extra points for the nostalgia factor. Even viewed without context, however, it's still an immensely solid and tasty beer, and it does a remarkable job of staying drinkable in spite of its high ABV. If it's body were a bit thicker, it would be a borderline classic.

Almost black color, strong smell of molasses, and roasted chocolate. Excellent smooth taste,a very straightforward porter that doesn't try to be anything but a great porter. Another great product from yards

12oz pour at Jean Bonnet Tavern in Bedford, PA. Black with foamy mocha head. Was rich and malty with sweet spicy flavors. Great body. Nice sipper by the fire place in the dining room.

Fairly straightforward medium style porter - slightly roasted flavors, a little chocolate and traditional malt bill. To the point and unassuming, it gets the job done.
