Fomerly Thomas Jefferson's Tavern Ale

This powerful and complex golden ale pays homage to Founding Father and fellow brewer, Thomas Jefferson. Yards Brewmaster, Tom Kehoe, worked closely with Philadelphia’s historic City Tavern to recreate this recipe, employing honey, rye, and wheat, just like the beer Jefferson made at Monticello.

L: A deep amber with a hint of copper. A very pretty and enticing color.

S: Deep caramel-like, bready maltiness. Smells of rum and figs and the aroma suggests that this is going to be a heavy beer—kinda like a Scotch ale. Also has some tea-like character. Pretty nice.

T: A fairly sweet mixture of hops and caramel upfront, with a sweet, heavy finish. More hoppy than the aroma would lead one to believe. Bready and somewhat boozy.

F: A medium body with moderate combination. Some warmth post-sip.

O: This was an interesting, nice beer though not too different from many other malty, heavy, boozy beers and I could see this being a really good beer for the colder months. A nice well-balanced sipper.

Amber copper color with three finger thick head with great retention.
Malty aroma with notes of apples, toasted malts, faint red fruits and spices.
Flavor with notes of raspberries, apple pure, some toasted malts, faint cinnamon and crystalized fruits. Dry aftertaste with a decent bitterness.
Full body with appropriate carbonation.
Nice Strong Golden Ale with malty notes and sugar-coated fruits.

12 oz brown bottle from a Giant market in S.E. Pennsylvania.

This pours with an exceptionally tall and creamy off-white head, foreshadowing the excellent mouthfeel. This is a malty, lightly boozy, ale. I don't think I've had one like it; certainly not the yeasty strong golden ales from Belgium.

12 ounce bottle poured into a snifter.

L: Clear orange-amber, 2 finger antique-white head, foam persists for a few minutes before receding to a foamy ring and thin cap, leaves lace.
S: Malty fruited bread aroma, British Ale yeast, hints of herbal hops.
T: Mineral and metallic to open, herbal tea, orange, honey and herbal hops after the mineral taste fades, getting a sporadic off-flavor that is reminiscent of wet dog.
F: Soft and creamy medium-weight body, moderate carbonation.
O: Decent beer, except oxidized flavors, really nice feel, will revisit with the hope of procuring a better bottle.

Purchase in State College at Giant.
LOOK: Pours a very clear and bright orange that, except for the malty head, looks more like orange cool aid than beer. The clarity level is interesting but not an appetizing look for a beer. It does have a decent off white head that slowly settles leaving some side glass lace.
AROMA: Adjunct like grains, honey tones, definitely get some alcohol in the aroma.
TASTE: Get some honey in the flavor. This may be strong in terms of ABV but IMO rather weak in feel and taste. I have always appreciated a high ABV as long as it masks the booze characteristics. For me this one didn't do it.

Surprisingly found as part of a Summer 12 pack from yards. Wondered when I would ever drink these three cans with the high ABV. The rest of the 12 pack are easy drinkers but this one will take more time. Found the right time in a quiet Saturday night and enjoyed. Great looking beer with excellent mouth feel. Alcohol taste is hidden and it goes down smooth. Nice sipping to finish the night.

L - Golden pour with a one inch frothy white head that dissipated slowly. Moderate lacing.

S - Light malt, hops and caramel.

T - Malt forward, caramel, light yeast followed by increasing grassiness and light - mod hop bitterness on a lingering finish.

F - Full bodied, light carbonation and smooth. A bit of stickiness on the lips.

O - Although I prefer a less hoppy ale, this is very good. I would buy it again.

12 oz. bottle. Slight hop bitterness on a solid malt base. The 8% abv is barely noticeable; this one is sneaky.

12 ounce bottle poured into a tulip glass.

L---Crystal clear, Amber color. An aggressive poured resulted in a massive, slightly off-white head. Great retention and tremendous lacing. A real looker.

S---Hoppy. Some citrus. I hate to mention another beer in a review, but it smells like Yeungling Lager.

T---Sweet. Malts are more prominent than hops, but still in balance. Some herbal notes.

F---Full bodied. Amply carbonated.

O---Spotty & inconsistent. I don't need another.
