Yards SaisonYards Saison

Brewed by:
Yards Brewing Co.
Pennsylvania, United States

Style: Saison / Farmhouse Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.50%

Availability: Summer

Notes / Commercial Description:
Saisons were originally brewed to keep farmhands happy and hydrated during the warm summer months. True to the style, Yards’ Saison is a semi-unfiltered Belgian style ale brewed with distinctive Belgian yeast. It’s delicate and fruity with a subtle spiciness. Styrian Goldings in the kettle lend a touch of hop to the palate, balancing out this highly drinkable version of the classic style.

Pale amber and sudsy in the tall tulip. Quite attractive. A whiff of green beans from the soul food place in the smell, like ham fat and broth.

Rather tart with a mineral taste. But some sweet malt underneath. More of the sweet and sour flavor than I care for. A stew of yeasty flavors ending with a fair dose of hops and some herbal bitterness. Yet another variation on the Saison theme and what you can do with Belgian yeast. There is nothing wrong with this one and perhaps I am being unfair to be unimpressed.

From the 12 oz bottle. Nice foamy lacing to the end.

12oz bottle. Pours a golden yellow with a medium white lasting head. Aroma and Taste of citrus, lemons, some grass and hay notes, with some biscuit malt and light bitter hops. A light crisp body with good carbonation. Finish is light crisp, citrus and lemon flavors with some light bitter hops and a lingering nutty aftertaste. Overall a good crisp and refreshing brew.

Pours a hazy, pale gold with a soft finger of white head. Pretty good lacing and plentiful beading.

The nose is pretty decent... orange peels, clove, banana, I gotta say it reminds me of a Blue Moon. Not off-putting, but not fantastic either.

The flavors here are rather muddled. Wheat, clove, more orange peel, sort of a medicinally tart aftertaste.

I'd probably pass on this one in the future. Glad I got to try it though!

Bright yellow in color and hazy. Poured with a short, dense white foam that sustains a thick cap that leaves lots of sticky lacings on the glass. Yeast, sweet banana and bready malt aromas with a hint of spice in the background. Smooth feel with aggressive carbonation through the middle to the end. Bready malt flavor up front that is quickly overwhelmed with a yeasty presence. Light sweet banana flavor in the middle and a bit of tangy spice near the end. Finnishes crisp and dry with a lingering yeast aftertaste.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a tall tulip. Sent to me by Inventsituations as an extra. Decent retention and pretty nice lacing.

A: Pours a nice light hazy orange with a big spongy white head.

S: Fragrant Belgian pale malt, vanilla, white candi sugar, sponge cake, mild stone fruits. Very pleasant.

T: Sugary, fruity esters up front with a nice dose of pleasing grain. Peach, sweet orange, vanilla cake, cooked sugar, flowers. Big bready grain and a touch of yeast in the finish.

M: Nice tingly carbonation, light-bodied.

O: This is a pretty good non-funky saison, more on the straight Belgian pale ale side. Drinkable and pretty flavorful.

I liked this beer. Tried it in a beer/cheese tasting and it was paired with a brilliant cheese; Harbison from The Cellars at Jasper Hill. The combo was fantastic. Very light, hint of spice. The "expert" at the tasting said it was brewed with candied sugar. Definitely could taste that. I'm eager to have another one without the compliment of the cheese to see if it stands on its own. Could be a nice summer brew after a good winter with great darks/stouts.

Poured into tulip glass, color is straw with off white head that clings the glass.

Smell is lightly peppery, a little bread and biscuit, with some feint pilsner.

Taste is crisp, pilsner malt with some light pepperiness coming through, a little light astrigency.

Mouthfeel is strong on the tongue a little on the stronger astrigent side for sasion but acceptable.

Overall, very tasty, not exactly as I remember Yards' saison but a very good local rendition.
