Hops and malt are very well distributed throughout the total drinking experience...50/50..nose is grassy with a biscuit undertone..this is a good "Drinking" beer that can be enjoyed more than once...with a slight aftertaste ,that'd is not bitter...!

DATE: March 9, 2018... OCCASION: Book Bingo 2018, in the books... GLASSWARE: Brew at the Zoo pint... sizzles out the bottle, forming a bright, sudsy two-finger body that bubbles and holds steady... crystal clear golden body allows for sparse effervescence.... light grapefruit and mango, grainy biscuit, and wavering spiciness--neither unique nor forward, but no indictment on its overall appeal--that is, if it were NOT an IPA... uneven head is left as the glass drains... the palate is predictably light, with reasonable effervescence and texture... the ABV has been increased slightly (to 6.0%) since it was added to Ratebeer... FWIW, the ABV is appropriate, making for an that reminds me of what was before the hop heads took over the beer garden... flavor profiles include grapefruit, mango, pineapple, crisp apple cider, biscuit, mild pepper, and floral notes... breaking no new ground but offering a dependable profile, this beer is a nice surprise in the mix twelve.... is this "uplifting?" Actually, it kinda is...

Yards Brewing Co. "Golden Hop IPA"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, "BOTTLED ON 011217" and sampled on 021317
$2.49 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

I initially wondered why Yards would produce another IPA as they already have several available, but I soon found out why.

Yards "Golden Hop IPA" is a refreshing and interesting beer that fills both of the currently popular "session IPA" and "tropical/Mosaic" niches nicely. It's a true IPA at 6.0% ABV, but it's so refreshing and seemingly light that it at least seems like a "session IPA" (wheat helps to lighten the maltiness, and it's medium-light in body and crisp with a fine-bubbled, gently effervescent carbonation). As for tropical character, it really hits it out of the ball park there with notes of grapefruit, mango, tangerine, berries, apricot, peach, and soft pine. It's bright in the nose, and even brighter in the flavor. I think they could have called it "Tropical Hop IPA" and no one would have thought to argue it.

It's got fingerprint-through-the-glass clarity in a yellow-gold body beneath a creamy head of off-white with very good head retention and lacing. It's clean an polished; and very well-balanced with a median bitterness and touch of yeasty spiciness that brings it to a dry finish.

As a warm weather beer for those who love tropical hops it's hard to beat. It's 6.0% ABV but that's only 1% stronger than Budweiser, and I could easily see enjoying three, four, or even more of these during a ball game, fishing trip, arts event, or backyard BBQ.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of tropical fruit, hints of pine. Taste is tropical fruits, light pine, a touch juicy, mild bitterness. Feels medium/light bodied in the mouth and overall is a decent and easy drinking beer, but lacking some punch.

-Spiegelau ipa glass.

A: Foamy textured one inch sea-shell white head holds steady with a crystal clarity and light spacious rise of effervesce within a carrot orange colored body. Foamy lace band of good coverage.

S: Wet pineapple-mango fruitiness, soft hay and grassiness. Soft orange and grapefruit.

T: Citrusy-orange hopping for flavor, bright and wet, with a support of mango-pineapple fruitiness. Grapefruit hay with a soft fresh lemony herbal hint in the background. Fresh oranges, spicy citrus, soft fresh grassiness with light toasted grain base with hints of pine and dry lemony hopping warmth on the swallow.

M: Light bodied, oily toast texture, spicy warmth with a gentle show of carbonation.

O: Overall a nice tropical spicy bite of hops. Things are fresh and wet with some amarillo grassiness, light toasted malt letting the hops show their crispness. Easy drinking.

A - Exactly a fingers worth of sharp crisp snow white froth... Modest retention ultimately leaves a full veil of similar lacing with a pretty thick collar... The color is a mix of pale gold and straw... A moderate bit of moderate paced carbonation throughout...

S - An enjoyable and interesting aroma... First is a wheat induced earthiness... This is followed by the familiarity of the mosaic hops... Some light bready notes... Just an ever so faint hint of the Belgian yeast that is included...

T - The flavor profile picks up where the nose left off... Starts a bit earthy before the mosaic hops takes this one in a juicy tropical direction... This is by no means overpowering in terms of the mosaic hops, but rather its subtle enough to add nice depth and complexity... A solid malt base of biscuit and cracker... The addition of Belgian yeast and wheat adds lots of subtle nuance which I enjoy...

M - Thin to medium bodied... Juicy mostly with just a tad touch of dryness on the finish... Light carbonation... Clean and crisp... Simple and refreshing...

D - Much lighter than I expected going in, but that's not necessarily a bad... Seems a bit misplaced as a winter seasonal with some of big hop heavy hitters... Rather this would be an exceptional spring or summer release in my estimation... All that aside it's a highly enjoyable enough offering... Fans of Yards or the Mosaic varietal of hops shouldn't shy away... Yards continually cranks out highly enjoyable offerings and this one is no exceptions...

Poured into a Ballantine XXX Ale can-shaped glass. Bottleneck says ????/16.

A- Pours a medium amber color with a 1/2 inch off-white head that retains well before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a full sheet of surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing leaves a broken ring behind.

S- Piney, mildly dank hop aroma.

T- Soft hop flavor with a bready malt finish. Mild bitterness for the style and not really any Belgian yeast presence though it's stated on the label that it was used. Slightly tangy fruit quality.

M- A tad sharp with medium carbonation and a body leaning toward the lighter side.

O- Every aspect of this beer is restrained. The hops, malt and yeast are all so subtle that the whole profile comes off as kind of weak. On the plus side, it's quite drinkable but, on the downside, it's quite uninteresting.

Delicious, citrusy, clean. Light bodied and well carbonated. Balance is almost even, just enough on the bitter and GOP's flavor side to call it hop- balanced. "Vibrant" and "uplifting" (appearing on the bottle) are both well deserved.

Not a bad brew but doesn't stand out amongst all the other IPAs I've been trying lately. I'd drink it again if it was available but wouldn't seek it out. Didn't quite have enough hop bite for me.
