Style: American Pale Ale (APA)

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.60%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Not to be boastful, but we honestly believe all others pale in comparison to this one. Crisp and hoppy, Philadelphia Pale Ale is brewed with Pilsner malt and American hops, which impart a surprising citrus aroma.

One of my favorite warm weather brews. I think Yards really hit it dead on with this beer. Pours a nice dark gold color with good head and some lace. Smells of citrus, some breadiness and malt. Taste is very nice---some bitterness balanced with citrus zest and light malts. Really reminds me of a good English ale. Low ABV makes it easy and enjoyable to drink. Perfect beer for a BBQ or watching baseball. Living 20 miles from the brewery probably helps with fresh local stock. Matter of fact, think I'll grab a six for today!

Apparently, Yards re-did the recipe with Simcoe hops, or so I'm told. It has a straight bitter taste up-front which then goes into the aftertaste. The aftertaste has apple overtones. The hops are very much dominant but not overwhelming. It came with a nice head which dissipated. Your views on this tasty redesign probably will depend on your feelings about the hop variety used.

Pours a confusing golden color for a pale ale, looks like an adjunct lager, half finger head that recedes quickly.
Smells citrusy, piney, and of dank.
Tastes like very light, pine, followed by some earthy grapefruit, and then pilsner malt.
Light, crisp mouthfeel.
Overall, interesting, good complexity for a "session" pale ale.
