Style: English Dark Mild Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.20%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
The most approachable of our ales, Brawler is malt forward and delicately hopped for a knockout flavor. Its smooth character, hints of caramel and toast, and remarkable drinkability define this ruby colored brew as a true session ale. Perfect when you want to go more than a few rounds.

On tap at the Smiling Chameleon.

Pleasantly dark ale color but overall less than what i expected from Yards as I loved Geo.Washington Tavern Ale and Love Stout. No pronounced flavor or aroma, guessing some roasted barley to create the color but overall just a session ale with no particular "wow" to it

Excellent low abv mild from Yards, with tons of nutty and toffee notes.

DATE TASTED: January 1, 2016... GLASSWARE: Kisatsky Tavern pint... OCCASION: Happy New Year bowl watching after visiting Mom and Dad... APPEARANCE: dark, cola-brown with effervescence (if sought out through the shady body... head is off-white, spongy, and riddled with bubbly crags and smears... the head retains well... AROMA: malt-forward indeed, with caramel, toffee, and toasty breads... some yeasty funkiness gives an earthy, grainy suggestion... hops are light, weak, and only slightly citric... PALATE: lightly textured, easily drinkable... thin and flat, with a weak finish...again, accomplishes its goal... TASTE: malty, nutty and toasted enough to provide some nuance... the predominant flavor, however, is an underdeveloped caramel that is candied (or canned)... the hops offer some lemon grass and orange, but faintly and without allure... overall, a flat flavor... OVERALL: a Yards fan coming in, this "approachable" beer doesn't hit the mark, and I find the pugilism is more directed towards the drinker rather than the demon on the label--unless that demon be a more confidently malted beer...

Had out of a pint glass at Restaurant 55 in Dover, pours a nice ruby brownish color, fairly clear, with a bubbly head that fades fast. Smell is mild, grain, obscure fruit sweetness tends to dominate. Taste follows suit, but it's actually not as bad as I thought. Nice breadiness overall, darker fruits such as raisin in there, some nice bitterness at the end. Body isn't thin, quite nice, prickling carbonation and light in the stomach. Wouldn't mind drinking this as a session beer though obviously it won't blow your mind.

It is a malt beer with an inviting finish. This is not what you are expecting from a dark beer. However, it definitely is a must get, and a definite, "coming back for more"!

dark brown color with slight head and lacing. Toasty nutty smell. Very similar to the smell but more toasty. Medium light body and carbonation but easy to drink. Overall its a pretty easy going english dark mild ale.

Poured into pint glass. The color is a pretty orange-brown with milk-colored head and lacing. It's a very attractive pour. Unfortunately, there's not much of a smell: a little bready malt and some caramel or brown sugar. The taste is unremarkable but pleasant. There is the bready-malt base and the caramel is more prevalent than it is in the nose. There is also some nutty flavor. This is a pleasantly carbonated ale with a low ABV that makes it quite sessionable. While there is nothing really memorable about the taste, it is, after all, a mild ale. I suspect that Brawler might be better on draught than from the bottle.

12 ounce bottle poured into a can glass.

a: Sexy looking Ruby rust colored body. One finger off while head with large bubbles. Head dissipated quickly leaving faint spiderweb lace.

s: Very light and whispy bready malts with a slight caramel sweetness. Very seductive.

t: I have already finished this beer and I am in search of another! Tastes like warm toast, a bit of cooked honey and just enough hops to balance things out with out taking over the show.

mf: Light body and medium carbonation. Just enough crispness to lend balance.

o: What a delightful beer. It is hard to hide flaws in something so light. Great American version of an English style.
