Cape Of Good Hope IPACape Of Good Hope IPA
BEER INFO

Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.70%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our Cape of Good Hope, which changes year to year, pays homage to the original style and adventurous spirit of the first British IPAs. This past year’s release, a west coast style double IPA, is brewed with 100% pilsner malt, imparting a subtle maltiness and beautiful golden color. Loaded with hops, there’s Columbus in the kettle and Centennial in the whirlpool. Then it’s dry hopped with El Dorado, Calypso, and Galaxy, resulting in a dry, crisp ale with unmistakable flavors and aromas of tropical fruits.

Burnished orange in color with a slightly hazy clarity. A smallish head is produced on a vigorous pour.

Very aromatic due to the double hopping, but not over welming. Fresh I'd say of earth and pine.
Sweet two row malts follow.

Taste is light, fresh and balanced what you might expect from a pale ale.
Malts are light sweet and lightly roasted.
Hops balance out the malts with very slight pine resin. Not overly hopped out like an IPA.

Fairly thick and smooth and slightly sticky on the throat.
There is a nice and soft alcohol warming at finish.

Style wise I don't know if this is an IPA a Dipa or just a pale ale. To me this is a pale ale and I will adjust accordingly.
This is a pretty good ale with good flavor nice aromatic and a slight alcohol warming.
This has fall written all over it.

Spicy, Cedar, Resin, Fruity

This year’s version goes “West Coast” with Columbus, Chinook, & Mosaic hops. The strength is hidden until a few sips in, extremely well rounded with more hop flavor than bitterness. Tropical fruit and thick herbal hop flavor dominate. Less of a bitter hop smash as most American brewers make of the DIPA style but more of full flavored version which separates itself from most.

Pours a calm looking apperance, complete with a hazy golden apperance and a thin head - which laces quite well. Looks the part.

Smells of exotic fruits and pine. There's a lot of delicious sweetness in this. I was not particularly excited about this prior to tasting it, but after having looked at it and smelled it, my expectations have increased signifigantly.

The taste is slightly underwhelming, but this is definitely a very nice beer. The exotic fruit sweetness is still quite present, with some slight bitterness in the aftertaste. The taste is quite excellent actually, even though it's quite subtle. The carbonation is medium-to above average, however I did not feel like the carbonation interacted well with the dryness of the body. Which is dissapointing to me since everything else about this is excellent.

Give it a shot! This is solid.

Poured into a 13 oz tulip glass bottled on 4/21/16. Pours a very attractive orange with a 2 finger orange head, that leaves behind plenty of lace.

Smell is orange, garlic, onion, mango, and pine.

Taste follows garlic, onion, orange, mango, pine.

Mouthfeel is a little above medium, mild carbonation, a hint dry, and excellent drinkability.

This is a very nice double DIPA if you don't mind a little Simcoe hops. Garlic and onion in an DIPA isn't for everyone, I like it and thanks @jzeilinger for this brew.

Light straw in color and very hazy to the point that no light penetrates. There's a fingernail of brilliant white resting on top. Moderate lacing. I smell that typical Northeast double IPA orange juice aroma with a faint bit of light malt in the mix. The taste is sharply bitter grapefruit and orange juice. The mouth is very resinous, lightly chewy, and slightly sticky.
