Had on tap at the brewery December 2011.

A: Poured pitch black with a 1/2 finger dark brown head. Not light passed through the glass. Carbonation present.

S: Coffee and roastiness. Missing dark fruits and other complexities.

T: Coffee, dark chocolate and dark roasted malts.

M: Thick and chewy. Noticeable dryness.

O: Not a bad beer but not a great representation of the style. It's missing the complex notes that most Russian Imperials have like dark fruit, dark caramel, etc. Also alcohol isn't warming. I think that's a keen detractor since this beer was made to impress the Russian Czars during winter. Still drinkable but lost points due to style issues.

I was pleased to get to try this along with some other BA's at Sturges Speakeasy in Harrisburg on tap, served in a goblet.

The color is black, opaque with thin band of tan with fine bead and some sticky lace. The smell is great with a blend of roast, nuts and spice with some dried fruit and cocoa for good measure. The feel is deceptive -very smooth for a 10% stout with nice mix of roasty and sweet textures with creamy smooth yeast and semi-dry finish.

I really liked this in that it has a familiar, traditional take on the style which is good since it doesn't have to have a bourbon barrel, coffee or other spice even chocolate to make it tasty. This has some of the aforementioned flavors like cocoa and roasted flavors with some mild fig-like and chewy caramel in the mix with slight alcohol as it warms but nice level of sweetness and bitterness in balance. This is very drinkable for the style I wanted to enjoy a second but it is too easy to consume for a 10%abv stout

A fine example of a well-made, medium bodied, noon-barrel aged RIS.

Can't compare with the barrel aged stuff, but this is a great beer. Full of dark malt, chocolate, and coffee, with a good chew and bite. Rich and coats the mouth well.

A fine beer I'd be happy to have again and would love to see aged in a barrel or on wood chips
