I'm torn writing this review because I really love having a quality Philadelphia brewery that makes its beer inside the city, but touring and spending time atthe actual facility was disappointing.

First the good:
-The tourguide was knowledge about the brewing system. He answered my questions about their yeast handing, whirlpooling, brewhouse capacity, pilot batches etc.
-we got samples of beer as soon as we walked in and also at the beginning of the tour
-All of the standard beers and the rotating beers I know of were available at the bar
-The space is beautiful. Tall ceilings open floor plans bright windows outside and into the brewery

The Bad:
-there were tons of birds in the actually brewhouse a fair bit of bird poop inside the brewery and on some of the fermenters. Not exactly appetizing

-The beers were expensive. $5-6 for most of their beers which is about as expensive as you'll find them at any bar. I think down the street at the Sugarhouse Casino you can get almost every beer for $4. The $5 sampler is a good deal though

-Bartender was rather apathetic to our presence even we got there early on a Saturday before it was busy. It took about 5 minute to get our beers after we ordered them. Also the tour guide was rather snarky when he said, "I know where the broom and mop are, but since you don't can pour your beers in a plastic cup at the bar?" He could have asked us more nicely like adults do or imagine this, grabbed a couple cups for us when he saw us walk in with beers we bought.
-The food was okay. It was fairly reasonably priced but $3 bought you a regular grilled cheese with a pickle, no sides not even a bag of chips. The bison chili I had was barely warm. If you are going to serve food it had better be good otherwise why bother? At least they let people bring their own food eventhough they have food (usually a good sign that it's a disappointment)

-Merchandise was very expensive. A love stout t-shirt was $18 and a ales of the revolution tulip was either $8 or $9 according to the bartender, I forget exactly how much it was even though glasses were listed at $5 on the chalk board. I didn't argue because I wanted to support the brewery and like the glass but damn that is a rip-off.

-The crowd there was not people interested in beer necessarily--some were just there for the free beer and went on a couple tours in a row

Overall, I still like Yards, they have really solid beers Philadelphia can be proud of. However, they need to have more affordable beer in the tap room and merchandise and better food

Arrived at 4pm on a Saturday to pregame before a concert at Festival Pier. There's a parking lot outside but I managed to snag street parking opposite the brewery. A few tables in a little grassy area across the street were occupied by people drinking in "to-go" cups and there were metal Yards bottle openers on the wooden fence posts! We were greeted at the door by staff who poured us a taste of Saison upon entry. It was fairly crowded and loud inside but my friend and I managed to saddle up to seats at the long, horseshoe shaped bar. Some TVs near the bar, but they were easy to ignore. Their entire line of brews were available on-tap along with a couple of one-offs. I had a Koelsch, Thomas Jefferson's Tavern Ale, and an Extra Special Ale (ESA). All fresh and delicious. Bartenders were friendly and attentive. I'd go back anytime.

One of the Philly classics, right down by the riverfront. Fairly big and roomy, but they close at 7pm, so get their early. Six mainstays a few rotating taps. Decent selection of pub grub as well.

Always packed and always fun.

This is a must visit brewery if in philly, and the most tradtional brewery in philadelphia. 3 different flights to give you an idea of what is being served. The beer tour is fun but standard. You will get some samples on the tour.

The folks there care about the craft, but the brewery does have a "tourist trap" vibe to it. There is nothing wrong with that.

Awesome beer selection! But seating can be scarce and food choices are very limited, but definitely go for the beer!!!!

SonofKron disapproves. The beer tastes like grass flavored urine. Awful

Great tour, good beer, and decent food trucks. Parking sucked as per Philly.

Selection varies by season. Limited food selection. Kind of small so weekends are very busy. Tour is pretty cool and you can drink during it. Nice people to talk to. Actually ran into Tom Kehoe when I was down there. Easy to get to from Spring Garden on the MFL subway. Love this place!

Went on a trip to Philly with some friends and we had to stop in here to check it out and see what it was all about. It was very busy and took a little while to get to the bar and order some drafts, but once we got our beers and found a table I really warmed up to the place. The music was excellent, The Smiths and New Order and R.E.M. seemed to be on constant rotation, there was a pool table which my friends had fun with, excellent beer of course (as you'll see in my reviews I think the Jefferson Tavern Ale is absolutely fantastic), and friendly people all around. We ended up having a nice conversation with complete strangers at the table next to us. That's really what a pub should be all about, bringing people together to enjoy great beer and great company. I'll be sure to come back here the next time I make it up to Philly. (Note: I don't know if they had food or not. I didn't really pay attention as I was mostly excited about the beer.)
