An afternoon stop in Mons on Easter Sunday 2003, gave me the chance to reacquaint myself with the provinicial capital of Hainaut, a place I had last visited some 6 years earlier in 1997.

Mons is really easy to navigate for the Beer Hunter, for the best Beer Bars all border the edges of the beautiful cobbled Grand’Place.

L’Excelsior probably has the second best beer range in Mons, but it is the most impressive bar. As you enter you could be forgiven for thinking that this is a high class hotel. The Ground Floor is a long corridor type affair with high quality wooden flooring and carved dark wood paneling. Tables & chairs run down each of the left and right hand side walls, leaving a clear walkway through the middle that runs right to the back of this corridor Café to the ground floor serving Bar, the Restrooms, and the stairs to the first floor.

The beer list is impressive, just topping 100.

The beer menu includes many local Wallonian beers, most in 75cl Bottles. The offerings from Abbaye des Rocs again proved popular within our drinking tumbrel. I noticed two beers that I had not had before. First was the lovely spicy unfiltered 6.5% ABV Blonde from the nearby Brasserie La Binchoise. I also found the incredibly hard to come by 5.5% ABV Blonde from the rarely seen Brasserie Augrenoise. This is an unfiltered wheat beer from a Microbrewery that barely produces 100 hl a year and is set in residential estate for learning disabled people. Different. Local beers are very well represented here, including the Brune & Triple from Brasserie Saint-Feuillien.

However, it stocks other beers as well, not just those from the South of Belgium. Having only recently tried them, I immediately noticed a couple of Unibroue beers; La Fin Du Monde and Trois Pistoles, and at vastly cheaper prices than in the US – how can this be – weird? In addition, the proximity of Mons to the French Border meant that it had some decent French beers on offer as well.

Food extends to main meals, the menu is strong on local specialties and good value.

You can sit outside on the cobbled terrace, but as it was raining during our visit, we got a seat near the entrance on the ground floor near the door. It’s a great place to sit and just people watch in the Grand’Place through the large front windows. A nice place whose interior and clientele somehow reminded me of those Agatha Christie films set in the 1930's.
