I had tried brewing an altbier myself and wasn't sure what to expect, but something tells me this was a lot closer to what one should taste like that what I brewed.
It poured a cloudy brown, with a small white head which dissipated quickly. Mild lacing on the glass.
The aroma was yeast and malt, almost a doughy or bready aroma.
The taste was much more complex than I expected; malty sweetness and doughy up front, with a very smooth sweet aftertaste that lingers for a long time. The mouthfeel was rather sweet and medium-bodied throughout. Overall a very good brew.

I had not had a cask alt until this one this past weekend. I've always enjoyed the alt style, but it really benefits from the secondary fermentation of the casking. Man what an unbelievable mouthfeel this beer had, both chewy and substantial without being too much for the style. I expect it from cask porters, stouts and pale ales I've tried, but it really helps to set off the alt flavor profile as well. The malted nutiness has enhanced by the increased drinkability the cask yeast imparted to the beer. Another impressive beer from Weeping Radish.

This is a .5 L seidel served at the Manteo location. It is near room temperature.

A: The ale is a hazy brown color with three fingers worth of head.

S: The ale has a malty, grainy nose with little in the way of hops.

T: The beer has a nutty malt body and few bittering hops. The malts give a chocolately aftertaste that finishes quickly.

M: I was foolishly mislead by the waitress who called the alt a really hoppy beer (against my better judgment, of course). The beer is good but not for a hop seeker.

D: Somewhat drinkable. Weeping Radish has many other good brews, so that may be a better place to start.

Served on-tap in a .25 L pilsner glass, unfiltered and unpasteurized. The beer is a clouded color with low carbonation and a finger of tan head that leaves some lacing. There are hints of coffee and green hops in the nose, but it's not very aromatic. On the palate, it's full and smooth with low carbonation and notes of coffee, green hops, molasses, caramel?, and a medium bitterness, all of which combine to deliver a medium finish. Decent, but needs some work, though it went well with their cuisine.

Note - this is from the first batch brewed at the new brewery

Appearance: Unusual appearance that looks more like an unfiltered cider than a beer; a cloudy cider color with a very small head that leaves little lacing

Smell: Bready aroma

Taste: Bready, rather sweet up front; very modest bitterness appears after the swallow that is joined by a milk chocolate sweetness at the end

Mouthfeel: Medium to thick bodied with very low carbonation

Drinkability: Flat and underwhelming, I'd be willing to chalk this up to a learning experience with the new brewery set up; I'd also note that this beer is organic and I have yet to have a good experience with an organic beer

Altbier was one of the choices on tap at the Weeping Radish restaurant. Had a pint with a tasty sausage lunch. Nice amber color, good head. Could taste the hops but the taste was lighter and milder than some of my favorites like Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Nothing exceptional, just a good smooth taste. I would order it again with food or as a session beer (Weeping Radish is having an Octoberfest the weekend of 10 Sept 05). I don't know if this beer is available in bottles, there were four other styles available in the store, but not the Altbier.

Just came on tap my last day in OBX. Clear amber in color with a 1" head. Decent laing developed through the drink. The aroma was of nice ripe fruit, caramel, malt, and some soft floral hops. This was thin bodied and not overly malty, but had a decent amounts of caramel, citrus, very mild bitterness, and a hint of toasted nuts.

Mouthfeel was crisp at the start and finish. Pretty clean aftertaste, only some soft malt lingers. The drinkability was very good, and overall the malt levels need to be a bit beefier.
