Bottle> Handled in the typically insane way the LCBO does this> Long term, in the light at room temp...but the beer was not skunked?? ( chemical adjuncts to prevent photo degeneration?)

Pour: a golden colored Pils with a tall fluffy cap which lasts and laces..moderate carbonation.

Aroma:Primal cracked grains, weak floral hopping , some sweetness.

Profile: grain and husky up front light moravian malts and hops then a flood of sickly sweetness from some refined adjunct source ( probably vegetable dextrose) finishes wet, sweet and with a light bittering

Overall impression: grainy nose cloakes the sickeningly sweet adjuncts and stabilizers ...the ultimate "Slovak welfare lager" meant to rot your teeth, fuzz your head and be easy on the Kopecks...why is the LCBO wasting shelf space with this commie welfare slop when we can’t get a decent lager like Spaten or Ayinger here ????

Also seeing an "80" rating for this sweet adjunct crap makes one wonder about the rating system.

I like the two tone green label.

This pours pale gold with a rocky head with excellent retention. Fantastic sheets of lace coat the glass. The aroma is grainy with a nice hop bitterness, nice malt sweetness and a residual tartness as well. The taste hoppier than I thought, though stil no Prima Pils. There a nice interplay between the malt and hops. I also taste a little bit of ryvita crackers. In the finish theres a slight metallic taste. The mouthfeel is mouthcoating and thick with good carbonation for the style.

This is a decent pilsner all things said, worth a try but nothing groundbreaking.

Appearance: Light light straw colour. Laces the glass nicely but head retention is not so good.

Smell: Hint of floral hops and some metallic notes.

Taste: Not overly bitter, floral and grassy.

Mouthfeel: Light body. Perfect carbonation.

Drinkability: Easy to drink for sure.

A delicately balanced, captivating perfume of honey, minerals and rosy baked brioche crusts emerges from this blonde liquid. A mouthful of biscuit, pepper and cream flavor is round yet stony and dry. Stabbing prickles of gas leave dusty etchings in the buxom, generous flesh. Neatly extracted bitterness makes the bones. Suggestions of honey-drenched apricot, plum and other stone fruits join unobtrusive mint and lemon/lime flavors. Buried within are measured amounts of butter and hot cereal notes.

Stylisticly this lies somewhere between a Bavarian Helles and Maerzen. I'm surprised. I wish someone brought this into the US. I'd buy 10 cases today.

Regarding this beer from the brewery's site:
"A friend in all moods and a comrade at every social event as in the days when beer was still simply called - beer. From that era of classic beer comes Zlatorog, the predecessor of all the Laško Beers. It is still the one most sought after, still the one that sells the best and still the one that is most often brought to the company of the drinking table."

"drinking table" ... "when beer was still simply called - beer"
Choice!

Pours a clear golden color. A nice bright white head, decent retention and lacing. The carbonation is very lively, lots of bubbles.

Smells of floral hops, pale malt and vegetables.

Tastes similar to the nose, pale malt, light on the hops and some veggies. Crisp and clean. Nothing that will shock the average beer drinker but it still has more taste than most.

I'm on a Euro lager kick, just to see what's out there. After buying a series of bocks to celebrate the upcoming spring weather, I picked up Lasko because it also sported a goat on its label. Though its not a bock, I figured I'd give it a go.

Quick pour yielded a fluffy head that dissipated very quickly. Nice colour to the brew, though, a solid golden hue.

Nose is malts, a bit of bread, floral hops, some sweetness that reminds me of corn syrup. Nothing offensive, nothing great.

Crisp cracker, decent but sparing floral hops, slightly sweet. A good malt profile. Easy to drink, certainly a touch better than most mass-market Euro fare. Still, calling this a czech pilsner is a stretch - its very mild. Finishes slightly bitter and tinny.

Strong carbonation, thin bodied.

Even if knocking another beer country off your list was the aim for drinking this beer, Zlatorog is actually a pretty decent and wasn't a chore to drink. Clearly the formidable brewing heritage of its neighbours has had an influence on this Slovenian brewer. Zlatorog is nothing great, but its certainly better than other Eastern European fare.

Pours a typical golden pilsner color, but head quickly dissipates and leaves no lacing. No detectable aroma. Taste started out sweet, but overall bland and watery. Dissappointing in general.

Poured from the 500mL bottle into a pint glass at Pr'Skelet Bar in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

A: Pure gold witha 1.5 finger pure white head with ok retention.

S: After pouring, the skunky smell is evident from pretty far away. Euro lager smell. A lot of must and some grainy sourness. Old grain.

T: Rough and grainy with the taste of whole grain crackers... like triscuits or something. Finishes slightly sour with a lasting impression of skunk and must that is not altogether pleasant.

M: Crisp on the tongue and going down alright.

D: Not a big fan and not looking to drink a bunch of these. Kind of off-ish taste, but I have a feeling it's intentional.

look: 3.5 | smell: 1.5 | taste: 1.5 | feel: 1.5 | overall: 1.5

Appearance: A solid two fingers to frothy head that retains and laces decently. The body is a typical Lager gold with perhaps a slight tinge of brown, however not much carbonation going on.

Smell: Really bad earthy skunk, with only the barest touches of grass in the background. It is also quite pronounced which in this case, isn't a good thing.

Taste: It takes just like it smells, as it starts with a sulfuric fizzy taste that turns into an awful earthy swamp taste. Not very complex, and frankly not very good. There are worse things I've put in my mouth, sure but this is not very pleasant.

Mouthfeel: The carbonation is way to fizzy, there is a severe lack of transitioning, the aftertaste tastes like dirt, and the only redeeming quality is that it thankfully moist to drink, washing away much of the unpleasantness.

Drinkability: Well, it does quench the thirst, but not much else. My stomach doesn't quite agree with it as it seems to cause some bloating. It's not easy going down, in fact it is a struggle.

Final Thoughts: Yeah...you will want to pass on this one. There are certainly better imports out there as I can't really see ever wanting to have another one of these ever again. It got drain poured at the half way mark. At least it looked nice.

Smell: Malty and sweet, not striking.

Mouthfeel: Smooth with a near medium body. Very sparkly carbonation.
Overall: Great! Huge contrast to Union, which I'm surprised many people favor.

I don't drink a lot of pilsner, but a friend of mine brought this over as a gift (thanks Ang!) so I figured I'd try it out and review it.

Poured a very clear yellow into a pint class, with a thin bone-white head that sticks around. Looks pretty carbonated.

Not a whole lot of aroma to speak of... some mild fruitiness and crackers, and a little bit of farmy yeast in there. Mouthfeel is surprisingly smooth, and actually deceptively little carbonation. Tangy fruits and yeast up front, with mild floral hops filling out the middle and aftertaste. Overall, everything is fairly muted, but this isn't unexpected.

Pretty decent for what it is, and better than most local offerings in the style.

4.9 % on bottle label. Nothing special here, this is below average stuff, and kind of cheap. Bought from the LCBO in Toronto. The aroma was sharp, crisp, floral, slightly sweet. Light gold in color, thin white head, lots of lace that fades rather quickly. The flavour was of floral hops, some sweetness, lightly bitter, light body, and medium carbonation. Finishes somewhat dry.

Decent thirst quenching, quaffer beer. Pours a very clear yellow with a small amount of head. Perhaps half a finger. Smells very nice. Bit of malts, with a grass and floral hop bite. Taste is very refreshing. Crisp malts, mild bitter hops. Mouthfeel is clean and light, but not to light. Very drinkable. A great session beer.

Pale golde. Short head, little lacing.

I get apple on the nose. Some hay.

Nice grassy hops up front. Doesn't leap out at you, but they're there, which is better than you can say of most mass euro-lagers. Crisp finish with light fruity malt.

A surprisingly nice lager from Slovenia.

Exp 16-05-08. Light golden colour with a generous off-white head. Well carbonated with lots of fast rising bubbles (on second glance, many are coming from what my dish washer left behind!). Now, where was I? Oh yes, fast rising bubbles followed by some very good lacing. Smells ... well, actually it didn't. Wait ... a mild grassy nose; certainly nothing skunky. Taste is real pilsener: dry, crisp, lightly hopped, thin texture, some malt to balance the bitter finish. Lingers in a very pleasant, refreshing way. Overall, this is something you should try if you like the style; I'd buy this again sometime.

A-Golden color, nice white foam, staying for couple of seconds, but stay with one finger till the end. Medium carbonation.

S-Extremely awful, very unpleasant smell, don't know what it is,like bad brandy.

T/M- Taste is below average for lagers. At the first,it is refreshing, but as you drink it,it tastes sorrow. Some bitter aftertaste.

O-Expected much more from this,Lasko produce nice beers, but this one is below their standards.

I tried this beer on August 27, 2007 at 'Smokeless Joe's' in Toronto. The beer poured a translucent gold into a glass with a loose white head which didn't last very long. There was some hints of malt in the aroma, but not a lot. The mouthfeel was thin, with mild carbonation, and slightly slippery, reminiscent of wheat beers. The flavour was also a bit on the grainy side. Not a beer I would go out of my way to order again, but it did knock another country off my list.
