We stopped in here on a recent visit to Cumbria, it is a real gem of a pub with it's own micro- brewery, the Foxfield in the back. They always have one of there own on tap with 3 others from Cumbria. The food is great, although not a great selection.. we had the medium pasties, which very large and very tasty. The pub is located right on the train line, which seems to bring a lot of custom in, with people coming visiting for a couple of hours or more. They also have a b & b.

Like my friends Neil & Sheila Clarke who left Wakefield to move to start the Cask & Cutler Real Ale Pub in Sheffield in 1993, Stuart & Lynda Johnson did the same thing, but they moved west to Cumbria.

The Prince of Wales was purchased, & Stuart & Lynda have built up the Pub to one of the best Real Ale attractions in the area.

There are no permanent regular beers, for the range constantly changes. It does however nearly always feature one, or two, beers from the TigerTops and/or Foxfield Breweries* and it always has a Mild on. A draft Belgium & German beer, as well as a Real Cider - these too vary. In addition, there is a decent range of bottled foreign beers. You will always get a clean glass here for each drink, and it will be always an over-sized one - a great policy.

The food is homemade, but main meals are only available on Sundays. The rest of the time it serves warm, but very wholesome, Snacks - which are much more filling than the name suggests.

A very welcoming Pub that has no Loud Muzak or Gaming Machines, but it does have great conversation. Traditional Pub Games include a Bar Billiards Table (I love these), Darts, Dominoes & Shove Ha’Penny to name but few.

It has a few rooms at present & offers B&B at very reasonable prices (10% Discount CAMRA Members). It is wise to book ahead though if you want to take advantage of this facility. Directly opposite the Railway Station, you can see the Train coming down the track from inside the Pub, & still run over the road & make it to the Platform on time.

*Stuart Johnson has been a Brewer for many years, & had actually started the TigerTops Brewery in 1995 in Wakefield behind their house before they purchased, & moved to, the Prince of Wales. The Johnsons still own their house in Wakefield (which is now leased out) and the TigerTops Brewery. But after Stuart moved to Cumbria, he handed over the Brewing reigns to Barry “The Mad Axeman” Smith. Once at the Prince of Wales though, the Brewing urge took over Stuart again, & he started the 3-Barrel Foxfield Brewery at the back of the Pub.

Winner of many local CAMRA Awards, it is always trying to better itself. This includes hosting regular themed Beer Festivals.

A Real Pub, with Real Ale, for Real People.
