Style: American Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
This triple chocolate stout is a unique interpretation of the style, combining three different chocolate malts, cacao nibs and 63 percent semi-sweet chocolate, creating a sinfully delicious brew. The addition of blackstrap molasses produces an earthy, caramelized tone in an already complex flavor profile. It's creamy, milkshake-like mouthfeel earns this beer the reputation of being dessert in glass.

2006

Appearance: It's a very dark, opaque brown. Head is a creamy, light brown color and about a finger deep. Retention was somewhat short and lacing was light overall.

Smell: Very light on the nose. If you stick with it, it does have a pretty good smell to it. It's just very faint. Toasted nut and chocolate are the primary scents. Coffee or espresso is secondary.

Taste: Initially it has a strong coffee-espresso taste that is way too acidic for me. It does have a wave of chocolaty malt flavors that follows providing a decent sweet taste to it. It's somewhat bland and leaves you with a bad aftertaste.

Mouthfeel/Drinkability: It's light bodied. Carbonation is okay. ABV is low at 7% for a "big beer." The acidic taste really prevents it from being smooth and hinders drinkability severly. Overall, it's disappointing. I had high hopes for this beer, but can't help but feel let down.

A: Dark deep light-eating black with a small 1-finger brown stouty head.

S: Milk chocolate... not much else.

T: Baking chocolate

M: Thick, kind of syrupy with just a little carbonation

O: A little heavy on the chocolate side of things for my taste, but if you're a chocolate lover, this is your stout.

12oz bottle
Served in a conical pint glass

A - It pours very dark brown with an inch of mocha colored head.

S - I have to search pretty hard to find any cocoa aroma. I do get just a hint.

T - The taste is some burnt malt, the faintest of cocoa, and kind of a soapy taste.

M - Medium

O - I hate to dog on Arcadia beers, but this beer is not good. I bought a four pack and wish I hadn't. I haven't been this disappointed since Mackinac Island Fudge stout. I was really expecting a good to great beer. Not so much.

WHOOSH, of air upon opening. I have a feeling, and yeah, WAY over-carbed brew. An easy pour and itÂ’s almost overflowing the snifter.

Once it settles down, a coal brown brew with a frothy tan head. Small aroma of chocolate and coffee. Transfers into the quaff, but the overcarbed fizziness interferes with the taste and enjoyment. This has potential, but needs better quality control at the brewery.

A "big beer" in their series that comes in at 7%? Wimpy,

Bottle picked up at Big Ten party store.

Pours a nice dark, not much head something about it looks troublesome.

Smell is strongly chocolate and cream, but it's also got a Nestle-Qwik smell I can't really shake.

Similar results on the taste, somehow it comes off as slightly false and cloying. Plenty of chocolate though. It has a thick consistency, normally I like it, but here it's more of a clogging sensation.

I don't know, this is a somewhat unusual beer what with the lactose, but it wasn't a beer I really got into. I may give it another try.

Thanks Dan, for sharing this one last weekend. Poured a deep black color, with a thin beige head. Aromas of molasses, vanilla, creme brulee and milk chocolate. On the palate, this one was rather thin for a stout, with flavors of chocolate, coffee, and roasted malt, with a rather bitter finish.

Poured into a SA perfect pint.

Pours pretty solid black with some reddish edging. There is less than an inch of tan head that sits briefly. A bit of quick dissipating lace.

The nose has a good amount of milk chocolate and lactose sugars. There is a sweet scent going on with a grainy scent behind it. Meh.

The taste is malty and has that bittersweet cocoa taste bit not in a rich and satisfying way. It tastes artificial and strange. The roasry malts kinda make up for it but not really.

The mouthfeel is too thin and holds like a light lager. This killed it for me.
Overall, not diggin' this brew. Tastes like an adjunct with artificial ou iy chocolate flavors. Drinkable and bearable, but certainly not worth the 11-12 dollar price tag. Pass

chocolate flavoring in it.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle [dated 20 Dec. 2012 and purchased in MI last month] into a snifter after a bit of warming .

Deep, dark brown coming out of the bottle, but black in the glass. A decent sized head forms but is mostly gone before the first sip. Nice coating on the glass with each tip.

S: Too weak and subtle for style, and a bit metaliic. Hints of milk chocolate, roasted malts, hops and a touch of dark fruit.

Taste: Hop level of an Ameican stout but the roasted malt component is too weak. Alcohol too obvious; These form a messy conglomerate with the cocoa. Even the after-taste doesn't gel.

Feel: Smooth and near creamy; full body, medium-low carbonation, slightly sticky finish.

O: Disappointing. ABV seems much higher, say 10%, it lacks balance, and roasted malts lack prominence, I suspect my rating will be noticably low, but I'm actually being a little geneorus, suspecting this may be a bad bottle; but then again, there's no reason it should be.

Appearance: Pours a dark brown/black color with a short tan head and some lacing

Smell: Chocolate, and some strange booze scent

Taste: Chocolate up front, then some carob and toffee. The unusual boozy flavor shows up on the finish. Some dark fruits in there as well

Mouthfeel: Medium body, light carbonation

Overall: Not bad, but not as chocolatey as the name would imply. Also I don't notice much sweetness in spite of the lactose. For what would seem like a similar brew to Moo Hoo, I'm a bit disappointed. If the weird boozy flavor wasn't there, I would like this better in spite of the low amounts of chocolate.

Being on a real chocolate stout kick, I must say I was extremely disappointed in this beer said to be brewed with "chocolate, molasses and lactose". It smelled right but tasted very average. And where was the chocolate? The smell and first few sips had some notes of cocoa powder but that taste quickly disappeared and turned into a moderate imperial stout. Slight notes of molasses were overpowered by the taste of burnt. One would think that "lactose" would instill a certain smooth and creamy character to it but I surely must have missed it.

In all, I wouldn't say this was a terrible beer, just not what the name implies and as an imperial stout it's just average.
