Drank from a 16 oz. can
Served in a tulip

Thanks to hopley for this can.

The beer poured a deep russet hue and was topped by tight, creamy, finger-tall, beige colored crown that fell to a clingy, lasting collar. Patchy blocks of lacing cascaded down the glass.

The aroma was malty and rounded. Big toasted malt presence. Quite nutty too. There was a dry yeastiness as well. Touch of roastiness. Hint of earthy hops.

The flavor profile followed the nose. Malty up front. The malts were quite toasty. Nutty in the center. Quite dry overall. As the beer moved along the palate, the hops kicked in hard and were quite earthy and bitter. Grapefruit rind was noticeable on the finish. More lingering pith and bitterness after the swallow.

Nice fluffy mouthfeel. Medium-full bodied for the style. The liquid contained a finer beaded, fairly zippy effervescence that turned creamy, slick and smooth on the palate.

I usually dislike hoppy takes on beer styles that are not typically hoppy, and I especially disliked this one. The hoppy bitterness in Black Sheep was excessive and distracted from what might have been an otherwise well crafted brown ale.

American brown ale from Arrowood Farm Brewery in Accord, NY... 5% abv, featuring Cascade hops and grains grown and malted in New York... Solid brown - nothing flashy or nuanced about it really - comes off nutty, mild, a little chewy, smooth, hearty, rich grain profile, bittered hoppy edge... Really dig it...

A: Med-deep brown. Pecan. Shades of amber with bright clarity. Head is moderate, light tan and silken smooth.

S: Almond milk sweetened with maple. Campfire marshmallow, honey grahams and milk chocolate. Pleasant and straightforward. Any roast is quickly cut by sweetness.

T: Count chocula cereal milk with a dusting of roast espresso. Bite of orange is more sweet than tangy. There's some sour berry fruitiness amplifying the roast nicely. Honey and oakiness with an autumnal burnt leaf smokiness.

M: Average body. Some dry roast in the finish.

Like drinking s'mores without all that extra sweet. It's my favourite beer from them.

Decanted from 16 oz (473 ml) into a Samuel Adams Perfect Pint; canned 02/25/20.
A: Pours a hazy, copper color with explosive head formation leaving a 3 to 4 finger, frothy khaki color head with well organized, lengthy retention and foamy rings of lacing.
S: Tangy side of tart. Aromas of cherrywood, milk chocolate, pumpernickel, clove, and caramel.
T: Semisweet to sweet. Chocolate/caramel, almost a Werther's vibe. Solid bitterness leaves a rather clean, if somewhat bitter, finish.
M: Medium bodied with unbelievably robust carbonation long after opening the can.
O: This is an amazingly tasty American Brown. Have only had a few, but this one is clearly top-drawer. Color me impressed.

Had this on tap at their brewery and it just blew my mind. Very complex tasting beer and very clean tasting. So many flavors going on here. A lot of their stuff isn't listed here on Beer Advocate but if you have a chance check their brewery out and if you can get your hands on this Black Sheep anywhere give it a shot you won't be let down. Definitely an amazing beer.
