So where should I start? Let’s start with the brewery…. One of the finest in Germany and therefore the world round. Located on the world renowned Romatische Strasse. If possible, visit this place and take one of their tours. I am a Bier snob/connoisseur/Fachmann/Kenner and yes I’ve been called worse but never better. I buy the Biers from this brewery on a regular basis for one reason and one reason only. Quality, quality, Qualität. Ok that’s three! I say this with confidence and with the abundant experience of drinking their Bier on a regular basis. Trust me to be fair? All of my reviews are done as a blind taste test with several Biers being tested at one time. That means it has to be good or it isn’t, and when the blindfold comes off there’s only the truth. Then I do the color, Schaum(head) and lace test. So let’s get on with it….

Pours up into a billowy off white head that looks like a mocha whipped cream dessert. The head itself clings to the glass as if they were formed together and leaves behind more lace than Star Jones had on during her wedding night. The color of this “Naturtrübbier” (unfiltered) is a rich dark brown with a ruby shade showing against light. The haze is slight and not very noticeable due the darkness of the Bier. The nose is very robust with a strong chocolate malt aroma upfront that fades into a mix of caramel and roast malt. Backing all of this up is a beautifully bright and crisp hop aroma. Not overdone for the style but very nicely present. Diving into this Bier, slight malt sweetness will meet you upfront which leads into a balance of very clean roast malt flavors and a fresh hop flavor with slight herbal and spice tones. It really plays wonderfully together. The bitterness comes on quickly after the initial sweet roast malt flavor. This Bier is neither too roasty nor sweet but rather a fine balance of the two with the hops filling in all the valleys created by these two peaks in flavor. Mouth feel is medium and covers the tongue nicely before finishing with a crisp dryness and a pleasant bitterness. End verdict? I think I’ll have another….I suggest the same for you!

Poured from the bottle into a Libbey style pilsner glass.

Thick and foamy uniform head. Almost a reddish tan color to it, real neat! Creamed whipped top standing easily three fingers or more tall off the pour. Body color is a deep mahogany brown with chestnut lighter edges. Even at this dark you can still see right through it. Very nice looking brew.

Real nice aroma. Light toasty grains, seems like lighter white bread. Hints of ash, almost smokey. Mild caramel. and faint nutmeg like sweetness. Very nice.

Palate comes wonderfully. A solid simple malt backbone, but real nice flavors that compliment. Hints of milk chocolate, powdered ovaltine, some creamy milk and vanilla mix it in as well. Very clean finish. Vanilla sensing and cream like flavors amplified on the swallow, with a bit of lighter milky touch. Light dough white bread rounds out as well in the mid palate.

Overall this drinks real well for a dunkel really enjoying it.

Superb color and smooth ride down to the stomach. This went down very quickly and had a nutty aftertaste. I had it in swing top bottle, with kept the head fresh for the second pour. Lastly, the guy on the bottle looks like a badass German Robin Hood.

(500 ml bottle, best before 26.08.16 - poured into a wine glass)

L: medium-dark reddish brown, slightly hazy... puts up a tall tan foam stand, rather dense, almost creamy construct, falls down but leaves steady, unbroken cap

S: dark, moderately toasty bread crust, tobacco, cocoa powder, raisin (choc covered raisin?)... mild barbeque melanoidin note... overall intensity bold and with dimension

T: richly, densely malty, dries and flattens out a bit in the finish... chocolate raisin flavor carries over, not sweet, though the finish leaves a little sugar... nearly doppelbock-level thickness of malt, just lacking that booze... low level, elemental bitterness

F: rather thick for a dunkel lager, even lightly doughy-chewy... body disappears in the finish, though a delicate snail-trail film of melanoidin paste lays down across then slowly sinking into the palate...

O: voluptuously malty, satisfying, regal composition... wish I had keg of this, every day... high marks are likely due... haven't had a dunkel in ages, and I'm a bit stunned

dark brown pour with big time foaming head. love that in the german brews.
in the smell and the taste, i got a distinct "licking an ashtray" kind of flavor and aroma. i dont mean it in a bad way, and as an ex-smoker it is very appealing. does anybody else understand this description? it has still got the typical sweet, caramel-ly malt, dry finish, and is a very good brew. with a medium body, it is filling. i like this, but it really is, as another put it, middle of the road for its style. however(!), after thanksgiving leftovers and the resulting bloated feeling, an UNDERBERG was recommended (and acted upon) which gave this beer a a punchy new flavor. love those germans; they know how to do life right!

This is a great dunkel kellerbier.

Deep reddish brown, it has a big tan head steadily shrinking to thin lasting top.

Aroma is rich caramelised toast, brown bread, hints of nut & wine, cocoa, wet earth.

Taste is nutty brown bread, sweeter up front, drier minerally finish, long aftertaste of caramelised brown bread, toast, excellent zesty bitterness - woody & herbal; very well-rounded, engaging, complex, subtle.

Best before 29-06-05. Pours in with a great, huge and creamy head. Beerdolor is one of the darkest ever seen and almost black with brownrewd shine. Its a naturtueb beer but I cant see any particles in it but its hard too say with a beer of this darkness. Nose is sweet and very malty being mostly caramel. Taste is malts and more malts ranging from sweet maltaromes to roasty/nutty. Aftertaste is dry and bitter with hops but also burnt coffeearome. Good example of a fine beerstyle to bad is hardly anywhere being sold. One I most certainly meet again soon!

Bottle dated BB 2017- I took it for being quite fresh:
deep brown with nice couple fingers tan head.
Nose of banana and a little burnt toast.
Taste dark bread, lightly toasted; nuttiness and some unsweetened dates; a little banana; and a light tang in front.
Thin-ish feel but with a palate enveloping softness.

Just hit on all parts for me, with enough complexity to be interesting but simple enough to be enjoyed without any thought.

500ml swingtop bottle bought online from The Cracked Kettle, Amsterdam...

Poured a deep mahogany red colour. Creamy head poured tight, thick and foamy with a good meringue like top which then faded to thin covering with thicker edging... barely any carbonation... some decent lacing...

Aroma - Toasted fruit loaf, strong and sweet caramel malts, some toffee, spicy dried fruits (raisins, figs and dates), quite yeasty, some leatheriness, nut brittle, some stewed plums, very light smokiness...

Taste- Again some toasted fruit loaf, spicy dark fruits (prunes, blackcurrents, figs,), brown sugar and toffee sweetness, decent grassy hop bitterness, toasted nuts, cola notes, some saltiness, bready malts, nutmeg, treacle...

M&D - Sharp initially then smooths out... light / medium bodied... A good sessionable brew at only 5.2%...

Overall - A good straightforward example of a Dunkel... very quaffable and definitely worth a try...

On the back, it says, "Bayern in year 1598. The Fürstbrauhaus [Prince's brew house] Oettingen-Wallerstein exercises for the first time his rights of brewing. That was the birth hour of a princely beer-enjoyment."

The color is dark amber, brown with hints of red but still a very bright beer. The aroma is pure malt, heady Müchner and Melanoiden, bready malt aromas as if it the malts were being boiled in the glass! No hints of hops at all in the aroma. I could stop now and the strength of this aroma might be enough to satisfy, but my mouth is beginning to anticipate it's time for enjoyment, and let's go.

mmmm... kinda disappointment all over the tongue. It's a flat, thin taste, though don't get me wrong, the beer is well carbonated and still has a mini white head after 5 minutes after the pour. The taste doesn't deliver on the same malt flavor that was promised in the aroma. No München malt taste, though it's still malty, it's got a slight acidic flavor. Now, I've had a homebrew that was skunked with a lactobacillus (lactic acid) infection, and this is not at all similar, but still, it's like a roasted bitterness, as if they used black malts that were not de-bittered. There's some noble hops bitterness involved, too, but overall, it's not in a good way.

The aftertaste has light licorice to it, and I can't really decide if it's a beer that works better with sweet or salty food. Hold on, while I rummage through the kitchen to figure this conundrum out. With Leberkäs: yuck. With leftover Christmas cookies that looked similar to this, yum!

I still can't decide if I like this beer or not. The aroma is out-of-this-world wonderful, but the flavor neither matches nor has other things going for it. Overall, it's a thin, slightly sour and bitter flavor with highly roasted malts in the forefront of the taste. Maybe it would taste better on a warm day, sweat pouring and the beer colder than I drink it, which is about 60 - 65F. I would also not label this beer süffig (quaffable/easy-drinker).

pours a medium brown, nice thick head, but it fades to a thin ring. bready malt aroma. taste is slightly sweet. medium bodied. smooth and easy drinking.

"Landsknecht" translates roughly to "farmhand", and this beer fits exactly what you might expect someone who's been working in the fields to drink. It's got character, mainly in the maltiness with a good dose of caramel and a hint of dusty cocoa powder, yet it's also quite drinkable. The 5.2% alcohol by volume might be a little bit too much as a quencher, but at the same time it's got some calories to it and when you're working a single beer of 5.2% with lunch won't set you back that much. Overall it's a basic, solid Munich dunkel with a good deal of character and plenty of balance.

Poured into a half liter stein achenut brown with a tinge of ruby a large bloomin off white head atop,the head was just overwhelming and went over the sides even with a light pour.Aromas of toasted bread and mild unsweetened chocolate,a tinge anise in there as well.A full creamy feel was the best part of the beer,on the fuller side and very creamy.Flavors were delicate but right where they needed to be,toasted and bready with light sweet caramel and unsweetened choclate,a firm dry almost earthy finish.A well made dunkel lager,the mouthfeel is just great.

Good weather for a dunkel, isn't it? From a 500 ml bottle, on to the beer:

Close to amber with orange and red hues. A half inch thick head sits on top after the pour, retaining itself in acceptable form and decorating the glass with webbed lace. A big surprise was the nose, not that it was "OMG GOOD", but it's a curveball to the usual dark lager. Sure, there's some raisin and squaw bread noted, however there's a big grassy bite upfront which I wasn't expecting.

Much different from traditioinal dunkels, as this one brings a noticable helping of hops. Grassy upfront, much like the nose, is the same with the taste. The malt base arrives and brings figs, squaw bread, bread crust, lightly sweet overall. A wash of grapey hops linger in the aftertaste. It's medium bodied, with a crisp carbonation which works well with the moderately hoppy aspect of this beer.

A bittersweet dunkel? If it works (it's not overbearing is either aspect), why not? A little adjusting of expectations is all you need to do to enjoy this German brew.

500ml fliptop. It's pretty dark brown with some reddish hues. Half finger of finely bubbled head. Retained really well.

Aroma, Toasted malt, nutty, toffee and bread dough.

Taste, Bread, some pumpernikel. Nutty, leather, a small amount of unsweetened chocolate. Kind of a toasted peanut brittle finish.

Fairly light bodied, almost a bit watery. Carbonation is nearly creamy but the body is quite there to support it. Drinks super easy for me. I think you just need to get this one not overly old, which can be hard for these German imports.
I liked it, but would probably only reach for it again if I were in Germany.

Poured from a brown 16.9 oz. bottle. Has a very dark brown color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of malts, dark breads. Taste is dark breads, malts, rye, some nuts, a bit of dark fruits, complex and tasty. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a good quality beer.

A clear, nut brown beer with a thock, creamy head that slowly collapses.

Smell is malty with a little spent grains and a nutty and somewhat roasted smell. A true bottom fermented smell. The yeast adds a scent of ripe apples that have gone a little musty. Also some whiffs of hoppiness.

Taste is malty with light caramalt notes that are a bit like bread crust. A light roast that adds a malt bitter and again the overripe apples come around the corner. Body is sticky and a little sticky. Aftertaste is dry and short. A remarkable beer that tastes like a Landbier to me.
