What I order when nothing else is available... Too much citrus.

A: 4 Pale gold color, hazy, with a substantial inch-thick head.
S: 4 Great mix of the expected scents: very fruity banana with a light spiciness.
T: 3.75 Definitely more on the fruity side than phenolic, this tastes like it smells: sweet banana. Spiciness is very light, as is bitterness.
M: 3.5 could use more carbonation, like the best German examples
O: 3.75 generally a very good hefe, though I tend to prefer the phenol-strong variety. Still, quite quaffable.

12 oz bottle pours an opaque orange color with a large-bubbled white head. Leaves a little to be desired on he retention and lace.

Sweet bubblegum yeast, a little clove and less banana. Wheat is there, but more soft than crisp.

Wheat snaps back more in the flavor and the sweetness retreats to the background. The yeast does not throw down as many phenols as I would like to see, more clove and banana please! Mouthfeel is soft and full, one of the beers best attributes. Its not bad, but I think Real Ale should be able to make a better hefe than this. Middling at best.

"Wheat ale." 12 fl oz brown glass bottle with branded pry-off pressure cap acquired in Austin, Texas and served into a weizen glass in high altitude Castle Rock, Colorado. Reviewed live. Expectations are above average given the brewery. Reviewed as a hefeweizen. "Best if consumed by 05.28.14."

Served at fridge temp. Side-poured.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

Head: Seven fingers wide. White colour. Okay thickness. Lacks frothiness and creaminess. Little lacing clings to the sides of the glass as it recedes. Retention is good - about 6-7 minutes.

Body: Hazy orange with yellow and copper hues. Nontransparent. Translucent. Appears adequately carbonated. Below average vibrance.

Overall, it looks decent for a hefeweizen, but is far from unique or special, and doesn't look anywhere near as good as most good hefeweizens I've had before.

Aroma: Wheat, clean barley, faint clove, and a hint of stale artificial orange peel. Lightly starchy. A bit too sweet.

It's not particularly appealing for a hefeweizen. There's no fresh citrus peel or full clean flaked wheat or rich biscuity yeast replete with clove - that's all absent, and in its place are sad attempts at replicating superior beers in the style.

An inoffensive aroma of average strength. Nothing about it suggests the taste will impress.

Texture: Smooth, wet. Overcarbonated. Unrefreshing. It isn't the crisp clean feel of a good hefeweizen; it's a disappointingly executed mediocre texture. Lacks weight or body on the palate, but it's still somehow not light, and has too much heft for what's meant to be a refreshing brew. Subpar presence on the palate.

Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, or harsh.

Taste: Yeast attenuation seems surprisingly low; this still has unrefined and unfermented sugars and comes off to sweet. A faint hint of clove is present, but there's little else in terms of yeast. Any hop character is generic and vague - indistinct fruity notes I guess. Wheat, sure - but it's not full and fresh, just mundane and uninteresting. There's a kiss of banana, but overall the yeast notes here are underwhelming.

I guess I like it in a general sense, but I expected better from Real Ale brewing. It's pretty shallow in terms of depth of flavour, and has below average flavour intensity and duration.

Balance is okay. Build is lacking. This isn't a gestalt beer. I have no problem with simplicity in a hefeweizen - just four ingredients is the point, but there should be depth, balance, and subtlety, if not nuance - that's the art of the style. And this just isn't executed well.

Final Thoughts: Not really even worth trying. I'm a bit surprised by how lackluster this is. It's not that it's bad, it's just that it's insipid and uninspired. There are a myriad of superior beers in this style at or below this price point - even (dareisay especially) in the Austin, Texas area. You've got to bring far more to the table than this when you brew a hefeweizen. I won't be getting it again, and I'd caution friends from picking it up. Definitely below average.
