Holy crap, I can't believe this beer is 6 dollars for a bomber. I usually have to pay more for a quad that tastes like this.

It tastes balanced, and now Real Ale has my attention, because this is like the time I tried their Devil's Backbone and was also pleasantly surprised.

Nabbed a bomber for $4.67 USD plus tax at a Sam's Club in Austin, TX. Bottled Oct 07 2016.

10.5% ABV. "Quadrupel." "A Trappist-inspired ale." "Unpasteurized." "Unfiltered."

Served cold into a conical Guinness pint glass and allowed to come to temperature over the course of consumption.

APPEARANCE: Deep dark amber body (NOT black). Khaki colour head. Head retains well considering the beer's high ABV, coming in at about ~6-8 minutes. Leaves some scattered lacing as it recedes.

AROMA: Sweet, with dark fruits dominating (date, prune, plum, fig, grape/raisin) and plenty of malty sweetness supplementing. Candi sugar, dark malts, treacle, molasses, piloncillo-like unrefined sugary sweetness, cocoa powder. Hints of something from the fennel/anise herb family are evident. Belgian yeast is certainly present judging by the abovementioned esters (dark fruit).

Suggests a gooey viscous brew with high sweetness. Though the aroma suggests an imbalanced beer of limited depth of flavour, it doesn't seem like a boozy or off-flavour riddled brew.

Aromatic intensity is moderately high.

No overt hoppy notes.

TASTE & TEXTURE: Unrefined sugars/treacle, candi sugar, dark malt sweetness, gooey chewy dark fruit (plum and prune mainly, with fainter grape and fainter still fig), molasses, baked brown bread, scorched bread crust, schwarz malt/black patent malt, specialty chocolate malt. Belgian yeast is indicated, going off those dark fruit esters.

No off-flavours, though its high sweetness is off-putting and it'll prove a chore to down a full 22oz of this, especially as it drifts more medicinal the more sips I take (and the warmer it gets).

Full-bodied. Thick. Heavy on the palate. Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, harsh, rough or scratchy. Tends a bit drier than most quadrupels, and it lacks the silky soft mouthfeel of the best expressions of the style (e.g. Westvleteren 12).

OVERALL: This is a chore to take down given its high sweetness/imbalance, and it just isn't suited to the bomber format (nor is any quadrupel I can think of, really). I'd like to see them switch to the 11.2/12oz format instead of this cash-grab nonsense, but to be fair $4.67 is a pretty good price for 22oz of a 10.5% ABV beer. With more bitterness and a silkier more approachable mouthfeel, this could be decent. As-is, it compares unfavorably to Belgian expressions of the style and good American expressions thereof.

The only reason to choose this over, say, Ommegang, is price, but then there's Boulevard to contend with not to mention other similarly fairly priced and obviously superior expressions of the style. Real Ale continues to fail to impress, but this is better than many beers in their usually underwhelming lineup.

I'd say this was disappointing, but then, that would imply that my expectations for a Real Ale beer were actually above average...

Served chilled in a cocktail glass. Black color, not much head or fizz. The taste does have a burnt toast flavor as others said, but I don't guess I like burnt toast. To me it is not sweet while not quite bitter. I can't think of any excuse to drink it such as paying $6 for the Bomber bottle.

Poured from a bomber bottle into a wine glass.

L - Very dark brown color, but not black. Clear when held to the light. Creamy, persistent, light tan head and rock solid lacing.

S - Strong malt aroma of lightly burnt toast, low roasted grain, chocolate. Also light fruity note from the yeast. Some alcohol aroma. Deep and complex.

T - Flavors begin with roasted grain (more like a brown ale than porter or stout). This is quickly joined by dried fruit and sherry-like alcohol and a total lack of hops presence, all of which befit a quad. The finish is long, alcoholic and slightly sweet.

F - Medium body. Creamy, moderate carbonation. Just enough hops bitterness to keep it from being cloying. Moderate alcohol presence.

O - This is a big, warming quad that is more roasty than most, but still very enjoyable.

Appearance: Black glass is opaque unless seriously back lit in which case it shows a brown clarity. Tan head drops off quickly and struggles to hold a thin halo.

Aroma: Heavy grape skin esters, Belgian yeast, some mild caramel sweetness, hints of alcohol.

Taste: Spicy, black pepper, dark fruit, plum, overripe peach, alcohol sweetness kicks in at the finish but supports rather than balances the other flavors.

Mouthfeel: Sharp prickly carbonation, medium heavy body is oily and thick enough for a chew. Total package is a bit numbing and warm.

Overall: A serious sipper, something to contemplate your day with. Needs some water, and food as a backing but I plan on spending an enjoyable few hours with this one.
