Picked up a bomber while visiting Spec's in San Antonio 4-12-17 for $5.88. Bottled on 2-7-17.

Beer poured reddish brown with a nice off white head with the initial pour.

Nose is toasted malts with hints of bread.

Tasted is a slightly sweet malt bill, bready, nutty, balanced by a decent hopping. For such a big brew this is very easy drinking.

Mouthfeel is full and smooth.

Overall this is my favorite of the three Real Ales i have sampled. Definitely pick this up if you like the style!

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a glass.

A - Pours a deep amber, forming a 1/2" off-white head. Medium lacing on the glass with very little carbonation continuing to the top.

S - Sweet malt aroma consisting of dark bread, maple syrup (or possibly molasses), with a hint of smoke. No hop aroma that I can detect.

T - Very sweet, candy like malts coat the palate. Very complex favors of caramel, bread, light sugar syrup, and a noticeable hint of smoke in the finish. The hops still play a minor role, and IMO, are completely covered by the malt.

M- Medium, but more towards heavy, in the mouthfeel. Light carbonation and very smooth finish.

O - Scotch ales in general are still a beer style I've yet to truly explore, but from what I've had before, this is just as good. Very complex malts with little to no hop flavor. Its nice to have a beer that's complex, but not a bourbon barrelled this or a hop bomb.

8/11/16 bottling date

A: Dark brown pour with a loud, fizzy light brown head. Quite good head retention. No real sign of lacing, just some little specks here and there.

S: Oh yeah, brown sugar and molasses and caramel with a hint of herbal hops and just a touch of smoke. Kinda reminds me of root beer for just an instant.

T: Yum. More of the same, lots of sweet caramel, burnt sugars and molasses. There is just that tiniest touch of smoke right in the middle/finish but it's gone before you even notice it's there. Touch of herbal hops and then more sweetness (though subdued now) lingering in the aftertaste.

M: Fairly heavy, very smooth.

O: Very nice scotch ale. Sweet up front, turning smoky and then more subdued on the back end. Great flavors, great balance, great mouthfeel. Excellent.

Enjoyed at around 45degrees at the start. Finished it at around 55-60. Paired with rotisserie chicken as a main course, and various cheeses with very sweet Manuka honey. Drank roughly 16oz of a bomber, S.O. drank the rest.

Through and through, a scotch ale. While it misses some smokey flavors, it is still a great example of the style. If you have never had a scotch ale, this is a good place to start.
Less carbonation than other scotch ales I have enjoyed. Fantastic dark brown/red. Far darker then Real Ales Red King. Very heavy, lowish viscosity, but again, suits the style.
Strong hints on carmel but not overwhelming. Smells just like it tastes, sweet.
Definitely a dinner beer. Would not want to enjoy away from a meal. First 4-5 ounces were pre-meal. Rest was with my meal. I much preferred it with food.
On a side note, the Manuka honey with cheese I enjoyed really brought the carmel flavor out in the Real Heavy. I don't know how standard honey would fare as the Manuka is heaps sweeter than most store bought honey.

Least favorite of the Real Ale Bombers. But I will still buy again when the lady cooks a big meal.

High ratings simple explained.. Great price for a nasty, strong brew. Look and Smell typical for style. Taste only missing that smokey flavor I enjoy.

Real Heavy Scotch ale purs fairly thick with minimal head. The nose has a bourbon barrel smell to it. The taste has a hint of sweet. More than a hint of char. a nice Scotch ale.
