Style: American Pale Ale (APA)

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.60%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Originally brewed to celebrate the brewery’s 16th anniversary, and wildly popular as a seasonal release, Four Squared lives on in our year round lineup to quench the thirst of both the hop beginners and the most ardent hop heads. Lighter bodied and not too bitter, the balance of Four Squared leans heavily towards its dry hop component, a combination of Crystal, Amarillo and Mosaic hops that brings a brightness to the hop flavor and won't weigh you down. Save the resin and dank for your IPA, this beer is all about the tropical, juicy citrus that grabs you from the first sip. Dry and refreshing, bright and fruity, Four Squared keeps you coming back for more.

Golden in color, this beer is very fragrant, with a nose that combines citrus, mixed tropical fruit, and floral notes. The white head of foam looks nice and it does leave a good deal of lace as you consume.

The taste of this beer is about in- line with the nose. It is fruity and tangy from the hops, with flavors of lemongrass, orange, and grapefruit dominating. Search a little more and you will taste flavors such as honey, bread, pale malt, and some pine. The hops are definitely present, there is no doubt about that. But the overall flavor is not over- hopped by any means and most will find it enjoyable and highly drinkable.

This Real Ale beer is a tasty one and the hops help make it and enjoyable brew. It seems like it would go very well with certain cheeses and its fruity component makes it a good refresher for a summer day- something I wouldn’t normally say for a hoppier than average beer. But this one is definitely one to try and enjoy and I recommend grabbing a six pack or two if you can find it.

There is nothing like opening a box from the mighty JenRay who routinely sends me CANs from Texas! This one arrived recently and since an approved pic already exists, I am going to dive right in.

From the CAN: "Only In Texas"; "Bright, hoppy & refreshing."; "Go Texan."

The CAN also identified it as "Unfiltered - Unpasteurized" so following the Crack!, only the most gentle of Glugs was employed. In fact, I began to get some foaming action through the vent, so I also allowed for some calming time. I stopped about halfway in since even gently deCANting the beer was producing cloudiness in this Yellow-Gold colored (SRM = 4 - 5) liquid. I did raise a finger of foamy, bone-white head, though, with moderate retention. Nose had a predominantly grapefruit-citrus quality and my mouth began to water. Mouthfeel was medium, but the carbonation gave it a prickly feeling on the tongue. Taste was grapefruit, all right, but not the super-puckering grapefruit that sometimes comes through in AIPAs. This was more appropriate for an APA and especially given the prickliness on the tongue. A higher alpha acidity might have been too much. I applaud the brewer(s) for recognizing when enough is enough! Finish was dry and citrusy, but like everything belonging to Baby Bear, it was just right.
