Style: American Pale Ale (APA)

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.60%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Originally brewed to celebrate the brewery’s 16th anniversary, and wildly popular as a seasonal release, Four Squared lives on in our year round lineup to quench the thirst of both the hop beginners and the most ardent hop heads. Lighter bodied and not too bitter, the balance of Four Squared leans heavily towards its dry hop component, a combination of Crystal, Amarillo and Mosaic hops that brings a brightness to the hop flavor and won't weigh you down. Save the resin and dank for your IPA, this beer is all about the tropical, juicy citrus that grabs you from the first sip. Dry and refreshing, bright and fruity, Four Squared keeps you coming back for more.

Fabulously fragrant. Pours quite a light golden amber color in the dwarf nonic. Long lasting head and plenty of fine carbonation. Big sudsy foam with every pour. Rich, fragrant, flavorful, and madly drinkable.

The zingy hops are just bitter enough, but mostly it's a festival of leafy, herbaceous, perfumey, and darkly fruity aromatics. I can't identify anything that reminds me of specific fruits, but it's quite a harmonious warm brew. I'm not a hop obsessive, but this is a really sensational hoppy beer. I think it should be categorized either as a Pale Ale or an American IPA. The focus is clearly on the hops, and the color is neither a red or amber. From the 12 oz can purchased at Texas Wine in Fredericksburg.

There is nothing like opening a box from the mighty JenRay who routinely sends me CANs from Texas! This one arrived recently and since an approved pic already exists, I am going to dive right in.

From the CAN: "Only In Texas"; "Bright, hoppy & refreshing."; "Go Texan."

The CAN also identified it as "Unfiltered - Unpasteurized" so following the Crack!, only the most gentle of Glugs was employed. In fact, I began to get some foaming action through the vent, so I also allowed for some calming time. I stopped about halfway in since even gently deCANting the beer was producing cloudiness in this Yellow-Gold colored (SRM = 4 - 5) liquid. I did raise a finger of foamy, bone-white head, though, with moderate retention. Nose had a predominantly grapefruit-citrus quality and my mouth began to water. Mouthfeel was medium, but the carbonation gave it a prickly feeling on the tongue. Taste was grapefruit, all right, but not the super-puckering grapefruit that sometimes comes through in AIPAs. This was more appropriate for an APA and especially given the prickliness on the tongue. A higher alpha acidity might have been too much. I applaud the brewer(s) for recognizing when enough is enough! Finish was dry and citrusy, but like everything belonging to Baby Bear, it was just right.
