Real Ale Brewer's Cut #2

A- hazy dark brown, very dark brown. Pretty much black. Small half finger head.

S- big sweet dark fruit notes with burnt sugar and a slight hint of acetone.

T- again big dark fruit, caramel, a lot of burnt sugar bitterness. Bit of an aged cheese on the finish. Pretty big alcohol bite as well. Very complex.

M- thick sticky mouthfeel. Coats the tongue. Cheesy aftertaste.

O- okay, so I still don't like Quads all that much. Take my review with a grain of salt. It's pretty tasty, but there are some flavors that I don't like. It's definitely better than Rochefort 10. It's good. If you're into quads it probably great! Very complex.

The beer pours a very dark brown to black color with an off-white head. The aroma is full of chocolate and dark fruit. The fruit notes come through very strongly. I get some cherries and raisins. The flavor is very similar. There is a good dose of caramel and roasted malt, as well as some chocolate and a hint of coffee. I also get some cherry notes, as well as a good amount of alcohol. The beer is very sweet and has some brown sugar character. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Rarely have i had a beer which tasted like the description on the bottle or can. In this case Real Ale nailed it. To paraphrase, a malty quad and indeed this is the case. Pours a blackish hue with 1/4 head quickly dissipating and left little lacing round my chimay chalice.

Onto the good/great;

First taste was, oh yes this is a nice quad and then the malt backbone hits and you definitely are onto something slightly new and excitingly different.

Upfront tastes are the traditional fig, raisins, then belgian sugars and carmels, and finely turns to the malt.

The alcohol was higher than i thought, figured closer to 9% so pretty hidden burn.

Now to the kicker!; $8/4 pack, i will be returning to this again and again over the next 3 months. Great work Real Ale, I would rank this solidly above the Edition #1 (APA-nice but not great).

A: The beer pours a nice dark brown, almost black, body with a thin tan head that quickly fades to nothing.

S: A lot of delicious funk, some candy style sweetness and a little bit of fruit and yeast.

T: Has the typical "QUAD" taste with the funk and sweetness. There is also a nice sweet grain flavor as the beer lingers. The fruit flavor also reminds me a lot of coconut.

M: The beer is super smooth and has a nice thin body. There is a nice crisp feel on the back of the throat as it goes down.

O: This is by far the best beer that Real Ale has produced in my opinion. Everything about this beer just blows me away. Absolutely delicious.

A - Real Ale always catches your eye on the shelf. They always bring about top-notch continuity with their logo, typeface, and visual style, that any Texas beer buff will always spot it on a shelf. The brew pours nice and thick, with a rich, dark chocolatey-caramel color in it's body that lightens up at the bottom of the pint glass. Tawny head that leaves little lace.

S - A good musty (if that makes any sense). With indications of figs in the background. Not overbearing.

T - Without dispute, this beer glosses to the back of the palate without any resistance. With such a high ETOH, one would expect some resistance from the taste buds. However, this beer is enjoyable from start to finish. It opens and closes with dark fruits, but its never upfront and never overbearing. A solid clean finish.

MF - Rich and lathering. Maybe a little alcohol on the exhale, but who doesn't mind that?

O - Proud to be the first to review such a well-crafted beer. I was upset not have a sip of this at the Texas Craft Brewers Festival. Nonetheless, Real Ale has truly created a great piece here. Looking forward to enjoying another soon...maybe on draft.
