Poured into tulip glass. Little to no head. Well carbonated. Dark brown, bordering on stout color. Malty in the nose, and indeed on the palate. 10.8 ABV fairly well hidden, though not as much as other Belgians. Nice Belgian taste. A good beer

crazy little beer here (or big beer, depending if you view its twelve ounce format as small or its massive abv as big). our bottle, unfortunately, may have been a cellar casualty, put away to relax awhile, forgotten about, and consumed well after its apparent prime. our bottle said best before sometime in 2013, so we missed the mark on that one, but we liked the beer just the same. despite strong oxidation in the nose and finish, there is a lot to work around aside form that, starting with a really cool special black malt i am not familiar with in other beers, at least not that visibly, so i like it for that reason. i was surprised i didnt get more yeast from this, being listed as a belgian type and all, its almost missing for me, but perhaps its worked its way down a little bit, faded with time, but not totally gone, it just didnt present itself as a belgian after the dark brown yeasty heady lively pour. smells and tastes almost like an imperial schwarzbier or something, as german as belgian with the oxidation factored in. still some hop bitterness on the back end. almost nothing about this says quad to me, but it was never going to be all that true to a belgian quad with all this black malt anyway right? love how dry it is, and how well the booze is hidden, i would have maybe guessed 8% abv going in blind. not my favorite, but appreciably different. looks like they are brewing this one again, or something like it, so i need to find it fresh, but a cool beer even super old...

A real nice and interesting brew. Not heavily smoky like I was thinking it might be. I was afraid of some kind of weird quad/CDA mix. But that's not what it is at all. I shoulda known, RABC always makes great stuff. But they make some oddball stuff too! It's all good, it's RABC, one of the best breweries to have as your local brewery!

It's pretty quad-like, a little less Belgian-y than most quads, but thick, rich and enjoyable. Definitely give it a try

Color - dark walnut. Medium head.

Aroma- esters apparent and hints of pear and raisin.

Taste- A syrupy and hot interpretation of a Belgian brew. A complete miss and not measurable to any Belgian I've tried.

I have nothing against Real Ale (I've been to Blanco many times). This brew just doesn't measure up to its label.

Poured from 355 ml bottle into a Liefmans Goudenband glass (my preferred all purpose beer tasting glass), Tasted December 2012.

13 oz. poured into tulip on tap at the Hay Merchant in Houston, TX
(drank 11/11/13)

L: black indoors (hard to tell but might be 100% clear); no stick, almost no lacing

S: fruity; toasted something; tamarind; soy sauce; cherry pie ... malty for sure and very interesting, lots going on

T: muted sour grapes/wine; fruity; dark malty to the point of tasting very stout/porter-like; completely hides the 10.8% ABV

F: nice, solid carbonation, full feeling with a solid weight

O: so it's not Rochefort 10 ... so what? it does very much come off as a quad, which is awesome as far as this Texan is concerned ... I'd love to see more of our USA breweries tackle the trappist monk styles; it's sweet, malty, a bit like a wine, fruity and is good enough that I'd like to try it again.

impossible to score for me but forget the numbers -- it's a brew worth trying, if for no other reason than to taste a Texas-made quadrupel

a dark brown almost black pour with a finger of head which quickly dissipated. tons of licorice on the nose, chocolate, raisins, brown sugar, molasses. i tend not to like quads because they are too sweet, but this is very well balanced overall.. the flavor is sweet up front and a tiny bit of booze makes its presence - tastes of raisins, prune, brown sugar, licorice, roasted grains, a bit of wooden flavor to it in the finish adds a touch of smokiness. medium in body on the heavy side with a good amount of carbonation makes this one pretty enjoyable each sip.

glad i got this in a surprise trade i did.. like i said, not a style i tend to like but for what it is, i like it.

The Black Quadrupel poured a very dark hazy brown with hints of ruby red. The aroma was dense with the signature Belgian yeast, dark fruits and sweet caramel malts. It had all the flavors of a deep rich Belgian quadrupel with the bubble gum yeast, dark fruits and spiciness to match. Hidden behind it all was some dark chocolate undertones and the sweet caramel malts. Definitely a lot going on in this thick and hearty brew that coated my palate with it’s creamy confection. I hope Real Ale takes this out of the Brewer’s Cut and makes it a regularly featured beer.

One of my favorite dark Belgian style beers this year. Sad that it is a limited release.

This is my last bottle so it got a bit of ageing.

Poor: opaque black ale. little head.

smell: malt and more malt. yeasty. little citrus or pine from hops. Very much what I expect from the style.

taste: all malt, light hop. Dark fruit -- plum pudding or currants

mouth: smooth and creamy. Similar to Left Hand Milk Stout on nitro. But no nitro here.

Overall: Yum. More please?

A: Pours a deep dark brown with a big fluffy and fizzy light brown head. Head thins and fades away slowly with great head retention. Light, fluffy chunks of lacing left behind.

S: Big sweet dark fruits. Prunes, figs and some raisin. Plums even? Mild char with bits of chocolate. Caramel is notable along with some cloves.

T: More sweet dark fruits. Heavy and rich flavors contributed by the roasted malt. Gives it a charry, anise flavor with some bitter chocolate (just a hint). Sweet throughout with heavy caramel. Light acrid char in the finish, barely breaking free of the syrupy sweetness. Mild cloves and spices between sips.

M: Heavy body, lower carbonation, syrupy sweetness. Feels like lead in the belly.

O: A nice quad with the roasted malt providing a nice layer of complexity. Super sweet and super heavy, like drinking pure caramel at times. Tasty and enjoyable.

I got this bottle a few weeks ago in a parcel from my good beerbuddy T0rin0. Thanks Robert for this one.

Poured in my small Struise glass this beer has some difficultie to produce some head and carbonation. That's a pity. Nice dark fluid with almost no lacing in the glass.

Good and easy to drink, i thought the abv was 8 percent and no more but i was wrong...well hidden my friend in Texas. Enjoyable beer but nog very spectacular...

Poured from 12oz bottle into a Real Ale snifter.

A: Deep brown color. Mostly clear as I can tell but it's very dark. Aggressive pour leads to a 1 finger pure tan head. Lacing is spotty but present.

S: Dark fruit and caramel dominate the nose. Raisins and figs are present in the nose as well. Alcohol is hidden well.

T: Subtle, smooth flavors with the dark fruit leading the way followed by the toasted malts.

M: Creamy, smooth, big bodied beer.

O: A nice beer, a bit off from the typical quad but it's not in a bad way. Solid beer. Well done.

Hill Farmstead wine glass

A: Deep reddish brown. Layer of light tan. Forms a ring ram round edges. Alcohol feet.

S: Dark candied sugar. Dark fruits. Molasses. Smells like a quad, with slightly more roast character coming through from the malts used I assume.

T: Flavor follows the nose. Dark fruits. Candied sugar. Typical flavors, but also you get more of that roast character that you smelled. The carbonation is prickly and leads to a fairly dry finish. Alcohol is masked nicely.

M: Big medium bodied. Good carbonation.

Appearance: Glass is black but shows some murky brown light through at the edges. Holds a cream coffee halo of foam. Very thin cover.

Smell: Flinty, odd mixture of earth and banana peels. Esters are dark fruit with a splash of tonic water.

Taste: Belgian yeast drives most of the profile, comes across as European with a mineral water element. Some cherry skin tannin gives a little bite to the fruit.

Mouthfeel: Very prickly carbonation keeps the body somewhat suspended but seems a little overdone. Body is a medium heavy with a slick texture.

Overall: Where the normal road is Singel, Dubbel, Quad, this beer seems to have gone, Belgian Pale Ale, Double BPA, Quad BPA. Some great ester driven fruit notes going on, little peach, little tangerine skin, little plum, all with a heavy malt bill quietly holding it all up. A great little sipper, I'll grab more if I see it. Another interesting twist on a style: keep up the good work Real Ale!

Very little activity, no head, no lacing. Looks black from a distance, but at certain angles and distances there is some translucence.

I feel the boozy heat more than I smell it, but it is the strongest component. It will likely mellow some if aged. But I thankfully get some mild roast, a hint of dark fruit Belgian yeast, and a slightly stronger amount of caramel. Pretty good.

Mild roast, some caramel, and a nip each of sour cherry fruity flavor and Belgian yeast. Much like the nose, but without the dominant boozy heat. There is also some modest bitterness. It's all quite well balanced, and fairly complex.

Low carbonation, full body, and a moderately drying and bitter finish.

Until I had the Mysterium barrel aged stout the other night, I had never had a Real Ale beer that impressed me favorably. This one has been on deck longer, and I am glad to have purchased and consumed it. It's very good. The Belgian character flies under the radar, but it is noticeable. And the black element of the quad is unique.

Edition No. 002. RABC Brewer's Cut Black Quadrupel. Thank you 'Little Chris' for throwing this at me!

Poured into a snifter.

Looks nearly black, with some lighter brown hues around the edges. Looks like a black strap rum. The head was merely a half-inch in height before falling rapidly. Any evidence left is shown as scattered clusters of large beady bubbles on the surface in the form of a ring and a waning gibbous.

The Belgian black malts don't hurt the dark cellary fruitiness. Black grapes, blackberries, sugary raisin, dark roastiness, candi sugars, and hints of baker's chocolate and dulce de leche enrapture me in the nose. Slight smokiness is an excellent touch in such a decadent and malty Belgian-style ale.

A most chocolately quad with those same dark fruity elements that I found in the nose, complete with mustiness and juiciness, all the same. A very appealing element is that dark, but sweet, roastiness and blackening effect of the specialty malts. As a quad, it's still a little raisin-y, but there loads of wild berries in the flavor. Breadiness is darker than usual, like a marbled rye, and with a subtle spiciness as if there were caraway seeds used (which carries with it a quiet flavor of black licorice). That smoke is evident in the taste, as well, but not as poignant, after all. Great levels of potency, which accentuate the overall feel, as the finish has a sweet imported-like alcohol strength to it.

Lighter than most quads (or maybe than I was expecting), as it tries to boast a body best described as medium. The carbonation is lightly spicy to medium fizzy. The warming feel is still a plus.

Very glad to have tried this one, as it was just a freebie thrown into a deal I made with a local friend and trader. Ticked this one up with great enjoyability.

Bottle to Wine Glass

App- This poured out a deep brown color. Maybe tended a little in the center to look a little black. A good density and then trailed off at the edges. The head was a small 1/2" with a slow receding look but didnt leave lace or cling.

Smell- Well I am really not sure how to disect all this. The base quad is there. Some deep dark fruits and a little bit of sweetness. Then a bit of the malts come in and add like a small anise. A little bit of a mish mash but still nice.

Taste- Its tasty but just slightly above average for me. This was a good bit of sweetness and then quad came in. Dark fruits a little bit of sugar and then parlayed over into a malty bite with a bit of a Wookey Jack flavor.

Mouth- A bit on the thin side and then with a medium carbonation. The residual flavors are that of dark fruits and a bit of sweetness.

Drink- Just okay. Was hoping for a bit more out of this one.

Well, I guess after the Black IPAs, the Black Tripels, the Black Wits, and Black Saisons, the Black Quad was inevitable. I'm not gonna argue. This stuff pours a clear midnight garnet topped by a half-finger of light khaki foam. The nose comprises clove, black pepper, light cocoa powder, fig, light dark fruits, and a tiny wisp of brandy. The taste brings in more of the same, along with some cinnamon, light vanilla bean, more fig, and some extra red grapes (alright, I assume brandy is made from red grapes...I could be wrong...). The darker malts really don't exert themselves too much, but they're definitely palpable in there in a nicely semi-subtle way. The body is a lithe medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a slightly velvety feel. Overall, a very nice quad, one that shows that you can make an off-kilter version of a style without completely destroying the sense of the original style. Good times, indeed.

A: Pours a dark brown color with a light tan head forming on the pour. It recedes to a thin ring.

S: There's a ton going on. Fruity yeast, dark fruit, caramelized sugar, and some slight coffee bean.

T: Dark fruits, dark malts, some slight bitterness with a touch of paper. Sweet malts and light caramel.

M: Medium to thin bodied. Was expecting a little more body to this beer. Full flavor, but some prickly carbonation whisks it away pretty quickly.

O: I enjoyed the nose on this immensely, but the mouth feel was lacking. A little too thin and the carb was a little high. Overall it was nicely done though.

This ink-black concoction was intensely amazing. Quads and stouts are two of my favourite beers and this blends them perfectly. Smells of coffee, nuts, old rotted fruit, amazingness. The taste is also like rotted fruit, very malty, smoky, and a little nutty. The yeast flavour is strong, as it should be for a quad, but it's a little overpowering. That's probably the only reason that there is a bad side to this mix. I love all the smoky darkness of dark beers and the yeast covers up some of those flavours. But it adds such a great rotting plum flavour that works so incredibly well, it's totally worth it. Alcohol warmth is near-perfect too. It's a tiny bit more covered up than I prefer, but I know most people are not a fan of alcohol warmth, so I'll take it. It really is great. It's even got a tiny bit of head that sticks around the edges throughout despite the fact that none forms initially. This beer is beautiful.

A: Pours a dark brown/nearly black color. A tiny tan head form, and recedes in a second. Not much lace either.
S: Very aromatic. At first I get a black current kind of aroma, followed by liquorish. Dark fruits of plums and cherries and light chocolate lingering on the nose. Excellent.
S: Follows the nose with the black current and liquorish flavor up front. Reminds me of Unibroue 17th Anniversary. Though not quite as intense as that. Dark fruits of plums and cherries. Some bitter chocolate in the finish. Excellent.
M/D: A medium to full body. Moderate carbonation as well that is pretty smooth. So easy and enjoyable to drink. I will be coming back to this a lot if I can get more bottles.

This is well made. With all the new breweries that are doing so many new things, it is great to see one of the Godfathers of Texas micro brews reminding everyone that they are still one of the best in the Lone Star State.

Pours a very dark brown with a thin filmy light brown head. Smells of dark fruit and maple with some alcohol bite. The taste is strong with plum, red grape and boysenberry, some alcohol too. It's nice and thick with lots of carbonation and a satisfying finish. Real Ale did good with this one, they consistently put out solid brews.

Poured in a Ranger Creek Tulip
A: Nearly black, but dark mocha brown up to the light. Has a minimal light tan head that recedes quickly and leaves behind a little lacing.
S: Smells like a quad, plus. Belgian yeast, and the quad type scents you’d expect, but there’s a bit heavier roasty malt to the nose as well.
T: First off is the Belgian yeast, then bittersweet; you get the malt and the hops at the same time, and they balance each other really well. On the aftertaste is the alcohol, this could hide its ABV a little better, but the alcohol is not overpowering either.
M: Very lightly carbonated and a bit thinner than I would like, but just because it looks almost like a stout doesn’t mean it should be.
D: Easily sippable, and while it doesn’t hide its alcohol it would still be easy to tear through a pair pretty quickly. We’ll see in a year how it fares with some time on it.

A: The beer pours a nice dark brown, almost black, body with a thin tan head that quickly fades to nothing.

S: A lot of delicious funk, some candy style sweetness and a little bit of fruit and yeast.

T: Has the typical "QUAD" taste with the funk and sweetness. There is also a nice sweet grain flavor as the beer lingers. The fruit flavor also reminds me a lot of coconut.

M: The beer is super smooth and has a nice thin body. There is a nice crisp feel on the back of the throat as it goes down.

O: This is by far the best beer that Real Ale has produced in my opinion. Everything about this beer just blows me away. Absolutely delicious.

Dark brown in color with a tan head. Retention is moderate as well as lacing. Smells like raisins, figs, plums and candi sugar. Alcohol is noticeable but not overbearing. Lots of sweetness in the taste. Your mainly hit with dark fruits and toasted candi sugar but there is also a slight alcohol warmth. Its toned down quit a bit considering the ABV. Great mouth feel. Semi thick and with moderate carbonation. Sorta creamy. Can't believe this stuff is only 8 dollars a 4 pack. Hope there is still some left tomorrow.

Appearance: Obsidian body, crowned by a small, tan head, which fades fairly quickly. The lacing is fine-beaded, and glass-coating.

Aroma: Lots of vinous alcohol, wood notes, earth, dark fruit, and roasted malt.

Taste: Opens with sweet alcohol,roasted malt, and a decent caramel backbone. There are also prominent dark fruit notes, perhaps raisins and plums, and bittersweet chocolate. As the taste progresses, rather earthy notes appear as well. Throughout, there is an undercurrent of sweetness, mild but prominent. Finishes with a lingering vinous alcohol note, and some mild herbal hops.

Mouth feel: Smooth, soft, quite full, and rather pleasant.

Drinkability/notes: An intriguing and over-the-top beer. Would pair very well with a holiday dinner. It seems elegant and understated, rather like a fine Port wine.

Presentation: Packaged in a twelve-ounce brown glass long-neck bottle with a pry-off crown, served in a New Belgium Brewing chalice.
