Good pizza, but average beer draught selection. Decent bar food but not much else going for them. Located on the main street, which is a plus for them.

The best pizza in the region. For about $30, not including tip, we can get a large pizza (their house special), a small pitcher of craft beer, and a couple of sweet teas. Can't really beat that. Very popular with the locals and college scene alike. The staff is generally friendly and the atmosphere is laid back. The restaurant generally doesn't change out the type of kegs they have on tap, typically it's an offering from Blue Mountain, Devil's Backbone, Firestone Walker, Yuengling, and a couple of others I can't think of at the moment. Pretty chill atmosphere and varied crowd, you're just as likely to hear college students discussing Virginia Tech sports as you are professors discussing physics, a young family taking the kids out for pizza, or a couple of retirees having their nightly beer at the bar. Just a good small town restaurant.

The other side of the building is the 6-PAK which carries an assortment of craft and AAL beers. Wide variety of local, national, and international beers, most of which are sold as single bottle but there are some six packs available. Decent amount of bombers and the staff generally is knowledgeable about their products.

Atmosphere: cool little place split four ways. a beer store, a nice little patio, a restaurant and bar, and the groovy little basement. the feeling in the basement and the outside patio were top notch for me. The basement being the reason it is called the cellar.

Quality: good broad represenation of beer both Virginia and worldwide. overall you can expect a fairly high quality experience here.

Service: Sat at the basement bar and recieved great service. not the busiest night but the bartender was pleasant and helpful.

Selection: in terms of a bottle shop the selection is good but can be dated, watch for dates. the bar areas are good but not great. a bit IPA focused when I was there, where I'd prefer it to be a bit more seasonal.

Food: great gyro here. one of the better I have had in recent memory. meat cooked perfectly, good wrap and good fries. I'd more than happily eat there.

Overall: a great place to hang out and get good beer and food, but could use slight better tap selection.

Love the restaurant upstairs for whenever my family is in town. The downstairs is a chill vibe, sometimes a bit too crowded. Good variety of beer.

The 6-PAK store is great. Good variety. The service is A+, the guy who's always there can really guide you to what you want/would be interested in. Knowledgeable and not pretentious!

A great Place!

My second time thru Blacksburg yesterday, and my second stop at The Cellar. The left side of the store is a bottle shop and I've never failed to find must-have brews there. The right side of the building is a bar and restaurant. I've not had their food but the pizza and the mussels I saw yesterday looked great. There's outdoor seating as well as indoor and a second bar in the lower level.

If you're in the area, check this place out... you'll be happy you did.

They have a great selection of bottled beers and great food, especially their pizza. Their tap selection is limited but they usually have two monthly seasonal selections. They have some great deals, their hammer time is good value for pitchers of beer and they have fair prices on food and mixed drinks/cocktails. I would recommend the luck of the draw, $2 for a random selection of bottled/canned beers, they usually have two kinds per night in the upstairs and 2 in the downstairs, and they are usually good value, I've gotten everything from Famosa to Pale Moon (Blue Moon's Pale Ale), and a few seasonal beers and craft beers.

This place really should be listed as two separate spots, but since it is not I had to list each rating based on an average between the two.

The Cellar 6-Pak shop is a relatively new beer shop that The Cellar created by opening into the space directly to the left of the upstairs restaurant space. It is definitely a smaller shop that keeps most of its stock on ambient shelving. Singles of just about everything they carry above 6 or 4-packs on the shelfs below. The harder to find singles and bombers are located on the ends of each shelf row. When I was there I was pleasantly surprised to find multiple bottles of FW Wookey Jack. Also, I should note that every bottle in here (except for the DF 120min) was very reasonably priced! Left w/ a handful of VA single bottles, a couple harder to find singles, and a bomber of the above listed FW offering for about $15.

The restaurant has an upstairs and a downstairs that are distinctively different atmospheres. The upstairs is a little more "family focused" seating and dining experience while downstairs is more where the locals/students go. I think there are slightly more items available on draft downstairs (going from memory...it was closed when I was there this past weekend) than upstairs. Apparently there are a few more food items available upstairs then downstairs as well. However, if you going I highly recommend the pita pizzas. The food has always been solid and cheap. The beer draft selection is decent as it highlights a few local-ish brews and is very fairly priced, as is the bottle selection.

Certainly worth a visit if you are in downtown Blacksburg for a game or just visiting. Grab some food and take a walk through the bottle shop while you are waiting for a great food/beer time.

Hammer time is the best vaule in Blacksburg. For only seven dollars monday through friday, you can indulge in a picher of ANY of there beers on tap.

Plus the cellar is attached to to there 6-pak store which is stocked with 200 plus beers.

Why do these reviews require 500 characters.... I am currently enjoying 'Barney Flats oatmeal stout'. I wish i could tell you a bottle date of it because it seems a little old with its poor head retention..go hokies!!! go hokies!!! go hokies!!! go hokies!!!! go hokies!!!

Great selection on tap and bottles as well. Atmosphere is cool, especially downstairs. Service can be hit or miss. The manicotti is great, as are the baked subs.

Any place that has Sierra Nevada Pale Ale on draft has my heart. If you truly want the Cellar experience I would recommend sitting downstairs at the bar.

The staff is knowledgeable as well, which beats going to a chain and requesting something other than a macro brew only to get a strange look or a huh? The live music upstairs on certain nights is unique and adds well to Downtown Blacksburg.

Hit this place on a VERY slow Wednesday night. When we walked in around 1030 there was hardly a soul in the place.

Much like a typical college bar to me. Nothing special or fancy here. The bar was interesting though a horseshoe shaped thing.

Decent draft selection with around 20 craft and pseudo craft beers to choose from. I was glad to see the Blacksburger Pils and a Shooting Creek Farm brew on tap--both locals.

Our bartender was pleasant enough but nothing out of the ordinary. At least she answered my question as to why the place was so dead...oh, it will be different tomorrow. So, VA Tech on parties Th-Su? Whatever!

No food tonight, we had eaten earlier in the evening. So, maybe another time.

Overall a decent place which I am sure offers the best micro/craft selection in the Blacksburg area. This is certainly not a destination place but it surely is serviceable when in town or passing through.

The Cellar is definitely one of my favorite places to stop in around Blacksburg. It's a little farther (like, a block) off campus than most of the bars, so it's not always 100% college students.

Atmosphere: Nothing terribly special about the atmosphere here. They have a relaxed dining area and bar upstairs and a more lively area downstairs.

Quality: I get my beer in the right glassware at The Cellar, which is a lot to ask in Blacksburg. Beer always seems fresh.

Service: I've always had really good service at The Cellar, and I find the staff to be really knowledgeable about the beer they're serving. I have to admit I haven't spent much time in here during happy hour (Hammer Time) or when a lot of students are in the house. I'm sure that changes things somewhat.

Selection: The selection isn't huge, but there's always something to enjoy. On tap they've always got offerings from Brooklyn and Magic Hat, as well as locals like Shooting Creek and Blacksburg Brewing. The bottle selection offers solid domestic and import choices as well. I can always count on something good from Unibroue, Stone or Rogue if I don't see anything I like on tap.

Food: I LOVE their pizza, and I have to admit I haven't tried anything else. They have a pretty wide menu, so there's bound to be something anyone would enjoy.

Just had a late lunch here with Kels on a recent trip to Blacksburg, and it was a solid choice -- there are some places with better tap lists overall, but the food was pretty damn good.

Atmostphere: For a bar in a college town, it was pretty solid. I haven't been there when school is in session, but it was laid back, relaxed, plenty of seating and it was just "nice" and chill. Plus it has pinball. How sweet is that? I didn't get a chance to play it, but when I'm back, I guarantee it will be calling my name...

Service: Typical bar/restaurant wait staff -- they didn't really talk too much about the beer, just brought it out to us once we ordered. But they were nice and friendly and the service was prompt.

Selection: Tap list could have looked a little better - I went with Magic Hat #9, and beyond that they didn't have much (and some on this site might say that really isn't enough to get their attention), but compared to many other places, it was still solid enough. They also had a pretty solid bottle list, so if the taps don't do it for you, the bottles may.

Food: I liked it. They have mostly pizza and hoagies, and it all looks, smells and tastes great.

Value: The prices were about what I would expect - not too bad. I would imagine that if they tried to do much more with the tap list that the cost may go up to match it, so it's reasonable for what you get.

I had looked forward to this college town restaurant with the wide selection of beers but the experience left me unimpressed. It was crowded upstairs where the primary dining area is (downstairs is apparently the actual "cellar" where a more typical college drinking atmosphere prevails). The dining area where we sat and ate was quite noisy and the waiter was spotty, rushed and impersonal, no real interest in beer selection or assistance offered. The list of tap beers was fairly expansive but I saw only one brew that got my interest, the Rebel Rye, and that turned out so disappointing I didn't even bother with a second brew. I got the feeling that the poor Rebel might have been a victim of poor lines or other issues related to the place more than the beer and I was hopeful that the new Bull & Bones Brewpub would offer a happier experience that night (and it did). Our food here was fine, nothing memorable, acceptable for family or student dining. The atmosphere is pretty boring and crowded, no charm that I could identify. This may be a fun place for the college crowd where, for the area, young uninformed drinkers can have a decent selection of brews and such, but overall this is nothing to go out of your way for, especially now that the Bull & Bones has opened shop down the road. If you miss this place, don't sweat it, if you have time on your hands it might be worth checking their beer board for something interesting but don't get your hopes up if my visit is any indication.
