Good pizza, but average beer draught selection. Decent bar food but not much else going for them. Located on the main street, which is a plus for them.

The best pizza in the region. For about $30, not including tip, we can get a large pizza (their house special), a small pitcher of craft beer, and a couple of sweet teas. Can't really beat that. Very popular with the locals and college scene alike. The staff is generally friendly and the atmosphere is laid back. The restaurant generally doesn't change out the type of kegs they have on tap, typically it's an offering from Blue Mountain, Devil's Backbone, Firestone Walker, Yuengling, and a couple of others I can't think of at the moment. Pretty chill atmosphere and varied crowd, you're just as likely to hear college students discussing Virginia Tech sports as you are professors discussing physics, a young family taking the kids out for pizza, or a couple of retirees having their nightly beer at the bar. Just a good small town restaurant.

The other side of the building is the 6-PAK which carries an assortment of craft and AAL beers. Wide variety of local, national, and international beers, most of which are sold as single bottle but there are some six packs available. Decent amount of bombers and the staff generally is knowledgeable about their products.

Atmosphere: cool little place split four ways. a beer store, a nice little patio, a restaurant and bar, and the groovy little basement. the feeling in the basement and the outside patio were top notch for me. The basement being the reason it is called the cellar.

Quality: good broad represenation of beer both Virginia and worldwide. overall you can expect a fairly high quality experience here.

Service: Sat at the basement bar and recieved great service. not the busiest night but the bartender was pleasant and helpful.

Selection: in terms of a bottle shop the selection is good but can be dated, watch for dates. the bar areas are good but not great. a bit IPA focused when I was there, where I'd prefer it to be a bit more seasonal.

Food: great gyro here. one of the better I have had in recent memory. meat cooked perfectly, good wrap and good fries. I'd more than happily eat there.

Overall: a great place to hang out and get good beer and food, but could use slight better tap selection.

Love the restaurant upstairs for whenever my family is in town. The downstairs is a chill vibe, sometimes a bit too crowded. Good variety of beer.

The 6-PAK store is great. Good variety. The service is A+, the guy who's always there can really guide you to what you want/would be interested in. Knowledgeable and not pretentious!

A great Place!

The beer store may be the best in town.

My second time thru Blacksburg yesterday, and my second stop at The Cellar. The left side of the store is a bottle shop and I've never failed to find must-have brews there. The right side of the building is a bar and restaurant. I've not had their food but the pizza and the mussels I saw yesterday looked great. There's outdoor seating as well as indoor and a second bar in the lower level.

If you're in the area, check this place out... you'll be happy you did.

They have a great selection of bottled beers and great food, especially their pizza. Their tap selection is limited but they usually have two monthly seasonal selections. They have some great deals, their hammer time is good value for pitchers of beer and they have fair prices on food and mixed drinks/cocktails. I would recommend the luck of the draw, $2 for a random selection of bottled/canned beers, they usually have two kinds per night in the upstairs and 2 in the downstairs, and they are usually good value, I've gotten everything from Famosa to Pale Moon (Blue Moon's Pale Ale), and a few seasonal beers and craft beers.

This place really should be listed as two separate spots, but since it is not I had to list each rating based on an average between the two.

The Cellar 6-Pak shop is a relatively new beer shop that The Cellar created by opening into the space directly to the left of the upstairs restaurant space. It is definitely a smaller shop that keeps most of its stock on ambient shelving. Singles of just about everything they carry above 6 or 4-packs on the shelfs below. The harder to find singles and bombers are located on the ends of each shelf row. When I was there I was pleasantly surprised to find multiple bottles of FW Wookey Jack. Also, I should note that every bottle in here (except for the DF 120min) was very reasonably priced! Left w/ a handful of VA single bottles, a couple harder to find singles, and a bomber of the above listed FW offering for about $15.

The restaurant has an upstairs and a downstairs that are distinctively different atmospheres. The upstairs is a little more "family focused" seating and dining experience while downstairs is more where the locals/students go. I think there are slightly more items available on draft downstairs (going from memory...it was closed when I was there this past weekend) than upstairs. Apparently there are a few more food items available upstairs then downstairs as well. However, if you going I highly recommend the pita pizzas. The food has always been solid and cheap. The beer draft selection is decent as it highlights a few local-ish brews and is very fairly priced, as is the bottle selection.

Certainly worth a visit if you are in downtown Blacksburg for a game or just visiting. Grab some food and take a walk through the bottle shop while you are waiting for a great food/beer time.

Hammer time is the best vaule in Blacksburg. For only seven dollars monday through friday, you can indulge in a picher of ANY of there beers on tap.

Plus the cellar is attached to to there 6-pak store which is stocked with 200 plus beers.

Why do these reviews require 500 characters.... I am currently enjoying 'Barney Flats oatmeal stout'. I wish i could tell you a bottle date of it because it seems a little old with its poor head retention..go hokies!!! go hokies!!! go hokies!!! go hokies!!!! go hokies!!!

Great selection on tap and bottles as well. Atmosphere is cool, especially downstairs. Service can be hit or miss. The manicotti is great, as are the baked subs.

Any place that has Sierra Nevada Pale Ale on draft has my heart. If you truly want the Cellar experience I would recommend sitting downstairs at the bar.

The staff is knowledgeable as well, which beats going to a chain and requesting something other than a macro brew only to get a strange look or a huh? The live music upstairs on certain nights is unique and adds well to Downtown Blacksburg.

Hit this place on a VERY slow Wednesday night. When we walked in around 1030 there was hardly a soul in the place.

Much like a typical college bar to me. Nothing special or fancy here. The bar was interesting though a horseshoe shaped thing.

Decent draft selection with around 20 craft and pseudo craft beers to choose from. I was glad to see the Blacksburger Pils and a Shooting Creek Farm brew on tap--both locals.

Our bartender was pleasant enough but nothing out of the ordinary. At least she answered my question as to why the place was so dead...oh, it will be different tomorrow. So, VA Tech on parties Th-Su? Whatever!

No food tonight, we had eaten earlier in the evening. So, maybe another time.

Overall a decent place which I am sure offers the best micro/craft selection in the Blacksburg area. This is certainly not a destination place but it surely is serviceable when in town or passing through.

The Cellar is definitely one of my favorite places to stop in around Blacksburg. It's a little farther (like, a block) off campus than most of the bars, so it's not always 100% college students.

Atmosphere: Nothing terribly special about the atmosphere here. They have a relaxed dining area and bar upstairs and a more lively area downstairs.

Quality: I get my beer in the right glassware at The Cellar, which is a lot to ask in Blacksburg. Beer always seems fresh.

Service: I've always had really good service at The Cellar, and I find the staff to be really knowledgeable about the beer they're serving. I have to admit I haven't spent much time in here during happy hour (Hammer Time) or when a lot of students are in the house. I'm sure that changes things somewhat.

Selection: The selection isn't huge, but there's always something to enjoy. On tap they've always got offerings from Brooklyn and Magic Hat, as well as locals like Shooting Creek and Blacksburg Brewing. The bottle selection offers solid domestic and import choices as well. I can always count on something good from Unibroue, Stone or Rogue if I don't see anything I like on tap.

Food: I LOVE their pizza, and I have to admit I haven't tried anything else. They have a pretty wide menu, so there's bound to be something anyone would enjoy.

Just had a late lunch here with Kels on a recent trip to Blacksburg, and it was a solid choice -- there are some places with better tap lists overall, but the food was pretty damn good.

Atmostphere: For a bar in a college town, it was pretty solid. I haven't been there when school is in session, but it was laid back, relaxed, plenty of seating and it was just "nice" and chill. Plus it has pinball. How sweet is that? I didn't get a chance to play it, but when I'm back, I guarantee it will be calling my name...

Service: Typical bar/restaurant wait staff -- they didn't really talk too much about the beer, just brought it out to us once we ordered. But they were nice and friendly and the service was prompt.

Selection: Tap list could have looked a little better - I went with Magic Hat #9, and beyond that they didn't have much (and some on this site might say that really isn't enough to get their attention), but compared to many other places, it was still solid enough. They also had a pretty solid bottle list, so if the taps don't do it for you, the bottles may.

Food: I liked it. They have mostly pizza and hoagies, and it all looks, smells and tastes great.

Value: The prices were about what I would expect - not too bad. I would imagine that if they tried to do much more with the tap list that the cost may go up to match it, so it's reasonable for what you get.

I had looked forward to this college town restaurant with the wide selection of beers but the experience left me unimpressed. It was crowded upstairs where the primary dining area is (downstairs is apparently the actual "cellar" where a more typical college drinking atmosphere prevails). The dining area where we sat and ate was quite noisy and the waiter was spotty, rushed and impersonal, no real interest in beer selection or assistance offered. The list of tap beers was fairly expansive but I saw only one brew that got my interest, the Rebel Rye, and that turned out so disappointing I didn't even bother with a second brew. I got the feeling that the poor Rebel might have been a victim of poor lines or other issues related to the place more than the beer and I was hopeful that the new Bull & Bones Brewpub would offer a happier experience that night (and it did). Our food here was fine, nothing memorable, acceptable for family or student dining. The atmosphere is pretty boring and crowded, no charm that I could identify. This may be a fun place for the college crowd where, for the area, young uninformed drinkers can have a decent selection of brews and such, but overall this is nothing to go out of your way for, especially now that the Bull & Bones has opened shop down the road. If you miss this place, don't sweat it, if you have time on your hands it might be worth checking their beer board for something interesting but don't get your hopes up if my visit is any indication.

I've been to The Cellar a couple of times, for a sit-down bar, they have a great selection of beers, and a couple good ones on tap as well. The staff is a bit snippy, but thank god they know HOW to serve your beer there.
I almost squirmed in my barstool when I ordered my St. Bernardus 12 and they actually poured it into a goblet. Also their happy hour pitchers of draft beer is a great deal, rare beers for $10 a pitcher. A great place to mellow out for a while.
And their pizza is great too. Overall a great place to have a couple beers and good food, if you have a couple dollars, that is.

I have no idea what took me so long to stop here, but after trying it I think of all the wasted opportunities. The Cellar has to have the best beer selection in Southwestern Virginia. During my visit they had 16 offerings on tap, and the menu listed approximately 70 bottles. The draft selection was on the menu, and listed on a chalkboard to the right of the bar. My only complaint was the draft selection was lacking a bit. Too many off the beers are widely available. One great thing was they had Star Hill on tap that was nice. I noticed a few patrons had bottles, and the appropriate glassware to go with the beer. The food was fantastic. I can't say enough good things about the quality and value of the food. The service was topnotch as well. One waitress was handling the whole room, and never missed a beat. I'll be stopping again.

My latest trip to Vintage Cellar brought me to coincidentally-named The Cellar beforehand, as I'd heard about their good beer selection. And they do pizza. No arm-twisting needed.

The place has the vibe of many college-town eateries: earthy, cozy, homey, not exquisite in atmosphere but not a dump either. My only complaint is that it felt a little tight, too many tables packed into the small-ish room. First look was at the beer list, and it's definitely the best I've seen in the area: Rogue Dead Guy, Magic Hat #9 (ho-hum), Flying Dog (several), quite a few Unibroue, St. Bernardus Abt 12 and Prior 8, Corsendonk, Dogfish Head (Festina Peche and 60 Min.), others. 15 taps or so, and about 40 bottles. Maybe nothing outlandish, but welcoming enough. My St. Bernardus Abt 12 was served in proper glassware, a St. Bernard goblet, so they know what they're doing. Even the serving temperature was perfect, which resulted in a satisfactory pairing with...yeah, pizza.

I love pizza, and whenever I go somewhere new that does pizza, it always wins out. If the pizza is stellar, how bad can a place be? And they delivered on this score with a pie that would get a 9/10 on Pizza Advocate from me. Thin out the crust a little and it would've been perfect.

Service was good, seemingly beer-knowledgeable, friendly, attentive but not overly anxious to take your plate or get you outta there. I felt welcome to spend the whole day in there, and I suppose I could have if money wasn't burning a hole in my pocket and Vintage Cellar wasn't just down the road.

I went in here on a business trip to Blacksburg. The reviews of the bad service scared me, but I went in on a Tueday night around 7 and there was no one there. I sat at the bar and was served right away. The beer menu was a bit weird on the draft side they only had the company name not the beer name. The bartender was right there to answer what beer was on tap. The draft list wasn't over the top great but in the 80th percentile of most bars, probably in the 95th in Blacksburg. The bottle selection was very good, plenty of choices. I had a soup, which was excellent and a sausage grinder with fresh grilled peppers and onions. The food was great the service was very good and the beer list was good. This is a great place to spend an evening.

If you only visit one place in Blacksburg, visit The Cellar. While it's nothing compared to big-city places (Max's in Baltimore comes to mind), the selection and atmosphere are both outstanding here. Definitely sit downstairs, preferably at the bar but the tables to the right of the entrance are nice, too. Service is often slow otherwise. Their selection changes a bit, but plenty of regional goodness is reliably on tap: some Dogfish Head, New River Pale Ale, Flying Dog, and others. Blacksburg seems to have been taken over by the Stella Artois Mafia lately, and The Cellar is no exception (advertising it heavily), but the bartenders know it's not that great and that gives them points in my book.

Hippies, goths, Tolkien/Star Trek nerds, and strung-out townies are all going to be members of the crowd here. Notably absent are fratties and sorority girls (except for really "big" occasions like graduation, 21st birthday crawls, etc.) so if The Gap and American Eagle are more your crowd, you'd be better off at Top of the Stairs or (it pains me to say it, since at the old location they were so cool) Sharkey's. Happy hour specials are great; they have some of the Unibroue family in bottles along with a few other less-common beers; occasionally a Rogue or Stone bottle will make an appearance.

Definitely take note of the cool Mannequin Pis replica they have behind the bar downstairs. Also, do yourself a favor and order either the cucumber dip (yum!) or the crab dip (according to the wife, anyhow; I don't do seafood) with pita wedges. The pita pizzas are not to be missed, either: sausage and mushroom for me, please. Finally, you pay at the register, which makes it super easy to divide up a check. All in all, my favorite bar in this town, and the only one I'll really miss when I move to Seattle next month.

Edit: I wish they'd bring back the keg-urinal in the men's room, even though every time I used it I was afraid I'd sway forward and "Bobbitt" myself.

Well, I had Rogue Dead Guy Ale, and Mackeson's XXX Stoudt here, for the first time in 1998, and it literally opened up a whole new world for me (Thank you, Xaq!!). Plus every single one of the most interesting kids in Blacksburg hung out here, the arty, punk, hippie, nerdy etc., so I felt well at home.

Two of my former college roommates, Anne and Katherine, both worked here, and I practically lived here my senior year. Went back to visit last in 2004.

The Cellar is still like this although its been renovated. The taps have increased. The food and beers are still amazingly cheap compared to Philly prices, and the quality of the food and even the wine selection is unbelievable. The food is the best-tasting in town for those on a budget..and you must have the greek spaghetti and the spinach/artichoke dip. I have the recipe for the latter in my possession.

Vegetarians flocked here (and Gillie's)...Blacksburg has its fare share of "crunchy" students and locals because of the nature of the surroundings, the Blue Ridge Mountains, and the university (Virginia Tech). The Cellar's bottle list, wine list and pitcher prices will be shocking for those visiting who don't really know this town.

Within site distance of campus and on the wrong side of the street as the even numbered addresses are all on the street until you get to this section, the Cellar is a great little bar.

Atmosphere: Great. Very laid back, open atmosphere. Kind of small, and only one bathroom, but great people and great vibe. I would be comfortable bringing in any family or my roudiest friends in there. They also had a computer and wireless internet access if you wanted it. So you could theoretically do your reviews while at the bar.

Service: No problems at all. Friendly bartenders, quick service, and they gladly and without questions replaced the beers we had issue with. Two Doppelbocks were off. (One very badly, one just slightly in comparision.)

Selection: Very nice, while they only have eight drafts and I wasn't really impressed with the drafts there bottle selection was very nice and quite broad. From some macros to a 750 mL or two of Unibroue La Terrible.

Food: The Pita Pizza is the shit. Fricken awesome. Just enough for one person with your choice of three toppings. The nachos were ok, but two much shit on them for me. You could hardly get to the chips for the green peppers, black olives, onions, lettuce, and other stuff. Still very good, just hard to manage.

All and all, a great place and will be my regular stop for as long as I have to keep making the road trip to the Vintage Cellar until we change this law in NC.

This was my first time visiting the Cellar. The bad part, is that I have lived about 15 minutes down the road for the past 2 years! Wow, I really had no idea what I was missing out on. Sure, I had been to the RMC, which is better in my opinion, but this one is a nice one too, plus they've got food. Good food.

The food selection was quite nice, with an aray of greek, italian, american, and other brika-brak. I got the Philly. Sure, it's not the one from Philly I had, but it's still pretty good. And huge! Holy crap this sub was friggin' massive. I couldn't finish it all. The food prices were pretty good, with the most expensive thing that I saw on the menu being like $12 or $13. Most was around $6-$9.

The beer was a nice too. I think they had something like 15 beers on tap, plus a ton of bottles. Not as much as the RMC, but still one of the best selections, brand wise, around. For me, it's all about quality of beers, not quantity. Some of the prices were a little steep, but they did have some good deals, ie High Life and PBR for $1.50. I didn't think that was too bad considering this is an "upscale" type place.

All in all a nice little place to hang out. I didn't go down stairs but did take a look. It was pretty cool under there. If I were down there, I could have given it a better review for atmosphere. The top was cool, with all the old school beer posters and signs. Plus, some of the waitresses are pretty hot! Oh yeah! Giggity Giggity!

The cellar has two floors the upper floor is better lit and doesnt really have any character, however the basement floor is quite a different story, it is void of any windows and therefore dark. I always sit in the basement level as it just feels like more of a pub. The food is inexpensive and pretty good. I prefer their calzones and sandwiches, my wife who is vegetarian never has a problem finding something to eat there, she especially likes the pita pizzas and greek spaghetti.

My favorite thing about The Cellar though is their beer. Not only do they have a decent selection on tap ~15 diverse beers, but the also have two pages of bottled beers, probably close to 80 to choose from in total. In addition to the selection the prices are hard to beat, non-happy hour prices for a pitcher of Red Hook ESB is under 6 bucks, a glass of any of the Unibroue beers are about 3.50, not bad for that quality of a beer.

The Cellar is a unclutter, fairly well lit, nonsmoking restaurante (well upstairs at least). The food is Italian and pretty darn good. If I visit a few more times I might even take it up higher than a 4.5, it really was good.

The beer selection on draft is decent, and the bottle selection is well chosen. The draft beers were put into chilled glasses, but not frozen glasses. I got lucky on the second pint and the glass that came out was recent from the dishwasher.

I saw the service questioned on other reviews. It really is not the service that is lacking, but the kitchen. The wait for soup was about 10 minutes (it was great), and for a calzone was about 30 minutes. Plenty of time to have a few brews, but something you should be aware of. If you want to know when your food is ready, they alert the waitstaff with an anemic sounding buzzer/bell. Once it sounds, somebody will be getting served soon after.

My first trip to Blacksburg, primarily to go to Vintage Cellar, and we decided to check this place out for a few. A rather small place right in the middle of College town. There is a downstairs bar, but we sat at the upstairs bar the whole time. Draft selection was terrible. Macros and a few locals. I tried the Blacksburg Hefe (I think it was called), and it was not good. A very nice bottle selection, with a few nice surprises. I sampled the Sierra Nevada Bigfoot Barley Wine for the first time, and it was damn good!! Also tried a few Unibroues and finished with a Sam Smith Imperial. We walked around for a bit after that, then returned for a sandwich....which was good. Service could have been better as the girl acted like she hated her job more than I hate mine. A good overall place, and I will return.

The Cellar is one of those bars that seems to be most often found in a college town.. It has been there for over 20 years and keeps getting better with age. The atmosphere is more for mature students, grad students and professors. Its more of the Artsy Bohiemian Hipster scene than college frat boy drink til you puke. You will find no 50cent natural light night or anything like that. The upstairs is more of a restaurant style room with a small bar, while the downstairs resembles more of an underground punk bar, very dark with people smoking and playing chess or discussing some philisophical crap over a beer.

The beer selection is good. With some local Virginia beers on tap and your standard SNPA and Imports such as Bass and Newcastle. The bottle list is fairly lengthy with some Belgians, larger micros and some non standard European brews.

The service can be slow and on a busy night expect to wait a bit for both food and beer. It is often easier to go back up to the bar than to wait for your server to come back around. The food is quite good with tasty pizzas, calzones and pasta dishes. They have quite a few vegetarian offerings if that is a concern.

Overall the Cellar is the one bar in Blacksburg that when i go back to visit I always seem to end up in.. It always feels the same and I always run into someone I know which makes it the perfect place to kick back and have a pint or two.

My favorite place to hang out in Blacksburg. Decent selection of draught brews with many of the usaul macro/micro suspects such as Blue Moon, Sam Adams, Bass, Sierra Nevada, etc. and a few locals, New River Pale Ale and 2 rotating Blacksburg Brewing Company offerings. Decent bottle selection with a few belgians, germans, english and most of the Unibroue line. Friendly, professional service that ranges from awful to excellent depending on the staff that day. Food is excellent if slow to arrive, the best italian/greek food in Blacksburg. The best bar in Blacksburg IMHO.
