Notes: This classic German golden ale is crisp and satisfying. The mild, sweet malt is perfectly balanced with a subdued spicy flavor note from German hops.

Although blue in blood, the Blue Blaze brewery goes yellow for a moment as a German styled hybrid beer is born.

Pale straw and cast in a faint haze, the beer leads with a scent of grain, bread and fruit with a hint of hop herbalness. Less floral than expected, the scent floats above a creamy white yet somber froth. Flavors of grain and earth permeate the early palate as a sweet honeysuckle and cereal persist.

An as the flavors progress, its sweet taste begins to relax and its fruit esters pull from the floral hops in the shape of pear, apple and melon. Retaining a whole grain and slight cereal grain character, the beer quickly develops a light bitterness of lemongrass, mint and green tea to finish.

Medium light and trending dry, the beer's late palate is creamy, drying and mildly soapy with hints of mint, alcohol and grasses playing a spicy role in finish. A medium short aftertaste of cereal and lemongrass leaves the palate waning for another drink.

A: Pours a clear medium to dark golden yellow in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation rising from the bottom of the glass and faint amber colored highlights. The beer has a two finger tall foamy white head that reduces to a large patch of mottled thin film covering the entire surface of the beer and a medium thick ring at the edges of the glass. Light amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Light to moderate aromas of slightly sweet cereal grain malts with a light aroma of spicy hops.

T: Upfront there are moderate flavors of cereal grain malts with a light amount of grainy sweetness. That is followed by a moderate flavor of minerally yeast and a light amount of spicy hops. The hops contribute a light amount of bitterness which does not linger for long.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Smooth with a clean finish.

O: Easy to drink and enjoyable though an Americanized version of what I remember drinking when visiting Köln.
