Gold waxed 500ML bottle with an 11/19 date on the label.

The beer is black & the nose is full-bodied chocolate.

Rhino Suit is harder to nail down than a puddle of mercury. The barrel is…nice. The base beer is…nice. The gentle roll of oak & chocolate & vanilla are…nice.

This should be used by the Brewers Association as a baseline barrel aged stout. I’ve never had anything that averaged up every barrel aged stout ever made as perfectly as this one. There’s nothing overly good, bad, or notable about it. Unremarkable in every sense of the word.

At the recommendation of a staff member at Growler Guys Portland, I grabbed a bottle of this the other day. On a cold, snowy Thursday in December, I thought it the perfect house warming beverage.

The beer pours a fairly dark brown color with very good head retention and impressive lacing. The nose is every bit as impressive, as I pick up considerable bourbon, which tended to drown out the underlying vanilla and dark chocolate I also picked up in this beer. There was slight roasty/smoky aroma as well that was attractive. The flavor profile replicated the nose pretty closely in this fairly sweet stout, and drinkability is exceptional. The mouthfeel is pretty amazing in this beer, and the beer comes across as soft, fairly full and decadently creamy. Yet there's a lightness to this beer on the finish as well that I appreciated. The finish is nearly endless in this smooth drinking milk stout, and there's not a sharp edge anywhere in this well crafted beer. Alcohol is extremely well integrated into the flavor profile, giving one the mistaken impression that it's perfectly fine to down a couple bottles of this (bad idea).

Very, very impressive. The back label notes that this is a blend of the first two batches of beer ever made at Alesong. Talk about an impressive initial effort...

Jet black body; very respectable khaki colored head, dense and thick. An interesting smell of raspberries and light bourbon; sweet with a bit of chocolate lurking in the background. Huge milk chocolate and cocoa flavor backbone with a well-balanced bourbon note surfing the top; mildly bitter; raw oak way in the background. Heavy, heavy body; silky and creamy; velvety texture coats the palate with a rich, chocolaty sweetness; bold yet reined in boozy warmth.

Rhino Suit brings on the density and richness of an incredibly brewed and barrel-aged stout. It's heavy with sludgy, dully sweet goodness and braces things with a bold bourbon kick. Very complex, intensely delicious.

12 July 2020 - Beer #141

Corona Day #122

Price: $15.99 at Bottle King in Glen Rock, NJ

Appearance: 4 - not quite black and a tad thin looking. Not much head.

Nose: 4 - not a heck of a lot going on. Definitely some barrel. Getting quite a bit of vanilla for some reason.

Taste: 5 - ooo, sneaky sneaky. The barrel pows you square in the kisser. Base stout comes through a little, but mostly barrel.

Mouth: 5 - creamy and thick, but not frothy. Very thick, even. Hard to swallow more than a sip.

Overall: 5 - not as amazing as the mocha version, but this one is excellent.

Stay safe out there, my friends.

Looks good with a dark black color and a finger of mocha colored head that had good retention. Decent amount of lacing left behind. Strong barrel aroma. Nice bourbon and vanilla notes. Not much beer though. Better than average flavor. Not too much ethanol considering its ABV. Sweet milk stout base with some mocha notes. The barrel gives strong vanilla and bourbon flavor. Big body and nicely carbonated. Overall a nice bourbon-barrel stout.

Poured at 56 degrees; anthracite black with ruby edges; creamy beige with rocky top; ok cap retention; heavy ring and sudsy lacing; medium legs on swirl. Bourbon up front; spicy peppery dark chocolate; boozy retro nasal exhale. Bourbon, oak, milk chocolate; semi sweet chocolate base; oak and vanilla on backend. Medium plus body; creamy feel and tongue coating; medium minus carbonation; some warmth from 12.4% abv; dry oaky finish. Overall very easy drinking and enjoyable; great bourbon nose; barrel notes are stronger than underlying malt base; a tad thin for abv; very nice, tasty BBA imperial stout.

Appearance: Jet black. Light-brown head, low retention. Lacing is near absent. Very effervescent, visible bubbles forming along the glass. Light-brown ring around glass edge.
Smell: Sweet roasted malt backbone. Bourbon and vanilla take the floor. Cocoa notes. Lovely.
Taste: Bursting with flavor. Strong, sweet bourbon complemented by vanilla at the top; once again they take the floor. Bittersweet cocoa, coffee, and toasted coconut notes with hints of caramel toward the finish. Alcohol taste is present at the finish as well, presenting a lingering bitterness.
Mouthfeel: Full bodied, no doubt. Creamy, smooth, a sense of effervescent and alcohol tingle toward the finish, with a subtle burn. Wow.
Overall: Enjoyable, I must say. Alesong, I believe, hit it home with this one. For how good it is, I'd love a beefier head though. But, you can't always get what you want. Also, if you're looking for a beer that tastes like a beer, this one might not be for you. Highly recommend!

Good barrel aged stout, nothing too exciting about it but it was better than average.

L: Pours a dark brown liquid abyss with a slightly dak chocolate head that dissipates rather quickly. No lacing whatsoever.
S: Smells strongly of bourbon but not overpowering with sweet and slightly roasted malts, chocolate, and a whiff of vanilla here and there.
T: Full of flavor that stays consistent in your mouth. The most obvious is bourbon intermingled with dark chocolate, caramel and a smidge of vanilla. Once the other flavors are gone, an aftertaste of wonderful dark chocolate remains.
F: It has a soft, creamy, velvety warm feel as it moves in your mouth.
Overall, this is an exceptional beer. Usually bourbon in beer is overwhelming but here, it feels like I am in its warm embrace, all cozied up and safe from the cold. If there was one thing that would make this beer greater than it already is would be if it had a dollop of foam from the moment it poured till the last drop!

At Market of Choice, 2018 vintage.

Black with a thin brown head with decent retention and lacing this looks solid. The nose is exquisite. Rich and decadent without being cloying, this has a great blend of ~70% cocoa dark chocolate, chocolate ganache, bourbon, vanilla and some cream. The expression of chocolate notes is so deep and so wonderful. Mild roast, though the focus is on creamy chocolate. On the palate, the flavors aren't as good as the nose would suggest. Bourbon pairs well with the cocoa and dark chocolate and is a strong accent rather than a dominant note. Rich, creamy, flavorful chocolate lingers on in the finish with a mild bourbon note, the alcohol is well integrated into the flavor palate here. Excellent.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing nearly opaque black in the glass with a thin light khaki head that dissipates to patches with light lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt, bourbon, light graham cracker and vanilla; bourbon dominates. Flavor is slightly sweet dark toasted malt, milk chocolate, bourbon, mild oaky vanilla and dark stone fruit. Finishes very smooth with lingering chocolate, bourbon and dark malt. Excellent creamy medium body and mouth feel. A very nice big barrelled stout with a mellow and well integrated flavor. Although it is a bit bourbon forward, it is so smooth that the velvety malt body supports the bourbon very well despite not tasting as aggressively malty as a regular imperial stout. This is very nicely done and flavorful. I will keep an eye out for this brewery in the future. I love the flood of big stouts that arrive in this season.
