You are hardly likely to wonder past this place by accident, as it is located in Robinsons Boatyard in Saville Town Wharf, which is at the end of a 1/4 mile long Canal “Cul-de-Sac”, off of the Calder & Hebble Navigation Canal. As you enter the boat yard there are moorings for Long Boats & Barges as well as small pleasure cruisers.

The Leggers is based on the first floor of a lovely old stone building, refurbished in 1998, overlooking the Canal Basin. The bar is located in what used to be the hayloft of the Stables used to rest Horses used for towing barges along the Canals before the advent of 2 stroke engines. This is where the Pub also gets its name. Whenever a Canal met a tunnel & the towpath ended, the barges operators would have to propel the barge through the brick walled tunnels (that were barely just larger than the barges themselves) by laying on top of the barge & pushing their legs up against the roof of the tunnel – hence they were known as “Leggers”.

The Egyptian Brewery is located downstairs on the ground floor, just beneath the bar. 2, or 3, of their beers are usually on Sale; Marriots Mild (4%), Golden Eye 700 (4.2%) or their cleverly named, ‘Canal No.5’ are usually available. 3, or 4, Guest Beers are on the other Handpumps, one of which is always from the excellent Roosters Brewery, A Cider (their own), draft Budvar & Staropramen, as well as a range of ~25 bottled Belgium Beers complement the line up. Solid good value sandwiches are sold throughout the day. Popular with Canal walkers, who take the detour for refreshment, and boaters moored for the night - so it can get busy late on.

As you the take the stairs and enter the low ceiling bar, the room is divided into 3 areas. The first has a Pool table, the second very comfortable sofas & armchairs; the third is right in front of the bar at the far wall. A Real Fire is located near the bar. Positively festooned with decorations of all kinds, shapes & sizes; this Pub is just as eclectic as its patrons. On my last visit I ended up speaking with a South African about the 1969 Moon Landing!!

A strange, often “weird” bar at times, but it has some real characters, a great range of beers, lagers, ciders & bottled beers - so it is well worth a visit, especially the 1/4 mile detour from the main Canal.
