Welcome to Round 5 of New Oliver, The Belz Are Ringing Beer Sunday (Week 710) brought to you by Peter Belz of Shangy's Distributing in Emmaus, Steve Jones of Oliver Brewing Co. in Baltimore, MD & The CANQuest (tm)! Today is going to be a great one for drinking & reviewing a horizontal of Oliver BC CANs.

From the CAN: "Make your mark."; "206 W. Pratt Street was our home for over 20 years. Now that we've moved into our new brewery, this IPA is our way of paying homage to that history. Brewed with Chinook and Cascade for a hop-forward flavor and just a hint of malt sweetness, 206 is an IPA worth writing home about."

The astute reader/observer/follower of my nonsense will remember that brewer Steve Jones is a British expat & as such, he has a propensity towards brewing English-style beers. This is just one example, but indicative of things to come. It may be listed as an AIPA, but here are the brewery stats: "Malt – UK Halcyon & Can. Pale Ale, Crystal 45, Wheat; Hop – Bittering: Chinook & Cascade; Finishing: Cascade, Dry hopped with Cascade". Yeah, the hops make it an AIPA, but that malt sweetness is all his homeland.

I am really enjoying Crack!ing open all of these CANs today & I am extremely grateful to Peter Belz for this amazing hookup! This beer was just 10 days old (!) so I CANtemplated an invrted Glug, but I was beginning to run low on clean glassware so I went with a more gentle one, instead. It produced just over a finger of fizzy, foamy, rocky, tawny head with modest retention, quickly falling to wisps. 8=( Color was a pretty Golden-Amber (SRM = > 5, < 7) with Ne-quality clarity, prompting an impromptu visit from The Gelt Gang of Croesus, Midas & Mammon, running in from y living room where they had spent the afternoon watching the last day of the 2018 MLB season spool out. Our Pirates (Black & Gold) won & had a winning season, plus the NL will have two one-game playoff games tomorrow, which is kind of exciting. Nose was evocative of the kinds of AIPAs that first got me turned onto being a hophead - piney, dank, resinous & now, my hophead mouth was watering. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was eye-opening in that I had not realized that I was in the midst of a hops jones until now! F**k. I have been all over the beer map today, but hops have not been the focus until now. Man, did this taste really good as a result! Nothing on the brewery's website as to IBUs, but I'd wager that they were up there. It was bitter without being over the top, but CANversely, I was not getting much in the way of malt sweetness. I initially wondered about that since these are assertive hops & those are more mellow malts. Hey, no problem on my end, but they may be overselling it. Finish was dry & bitter, just like the doctor ordered. Maybe they should move more often …

Canned 3/22/18
12 oz. can poured into a tumbler style pint glass.

Golden and slightly hazy like filtered apple juice. The fat finger of dense white foam lying on top fades quick and leaves very little lace.
Aromas of citrus hops, bread and caramel malt make up a quality yet only moderately strong nose.
Taste is clean, hoppy and bitter from the start. After a few drinks, it starts to show the malt backbone as the bitterness tames.
Medium bodied with a nice frothy softness after the crisp, carbonation bite fades.
Solid and straight forward. Not juicy or super soft but a nice, old school AIPA.

Can dated 8/25/17 into pint glass. Pours a clear gold-amber with an eggshell-white head that dissipates quickly. Initial impression is citrus, spices, floral, maybe a touch of pine, nice caramel backbone. Mouthfeel is medium, as is carbonation. Finish is slightly sweet with a lingering bitterness at the back of the throat. Very good.

Pours pale orange, medium hazy, with a nice and retentive white head.

Smells bright and earthy, Cascade is dominate, with some solid malt backbone, and I think it's this maltiness that, sadly, sets it apart from so many of its contemporaries. It-it's an IPA, developed in 2017, that *doesn't* smell like fruit juice! Heaven forfend!

Tastes like basically a good, fresh midwestern IPA circa 2008. Cascade up front, fading slowly into a back end of bread and peat and some spicier, pine-ier hops on the finish. Everything is strengthened by the body, which is thick and full.

Delightfully balanced, interesting throughout, and it does a heck of a job of masking its ABV.

pours a nice golden color with a white head building about 3/4 inch high. It dissipates leaving some lacing on the glass.
The nose promises grapefruit and piny notes. the taste is confirming the nose. Good balance and nice feel. A good beer!
