There are 2 Railway Stations in Wakefield; Westgate & Kirkgate; O’Donoghues (known as O-D’s) is easily accessible from both. It is however closest to Westgate, & always forms part of a really good Real Ale Pub Crawl. It is only 200 yards away, so it is usually the 2nd stop after Harry’s Bar, & before Fernandes Brewery Tap.

A traditional style wooden floored long corridor Pub, this was at one time owned by an Irish Couple. Sold to the current (English) incumbents, it retains the character of an Irish Bar & most of the previous clientele.

As you enter the bar is to your right along the wall. The restrooms are to your left. There is a small piano & a Real Fire, as well as a window seating area at the front righthand side. A small but very cozy area at the back left hand side is popular with couples, as indeed is the raised back room, just behind the second Real Fire. Wooden floorboards & simple untreated wooden tables & chairs constitute the seating. The area in front of the bar is standing room only, this Pub soon gets busy.

At least 6 Real Ales are on sale. Beers from the Ossett Brewery, and more recently the Red Lion Brewery (both from nearby Ossett) are usually on Sale, plus other Guests. The Ossett Excelsior & the Red Lion Chardonnale, are both extremely good light golden hoppy beers - a style for which O-D’s is well known. Occasionally sells beers from the Hop-Back & Roosters Breweries, who also produce Ales in this style.

A very friendly bar, but whilst the Landlord Kerry, can be a miserable sod, Michelle the Landlady is the epitome of warmth & more than makes up for her partners lack of social skills. The female bar staff too are always popular with the punters. It does not open Weekdays until 5pm. Holds regular live music events. No food, but occasionally puts on warm snacks during popular drinking & weekend music sessions.

When I lived I England, I used to frequent O-D’s every Sunday with my then girlfriend Angie. So it was a real trip back in time, and a strangely heartwarming experience to be back here & drink the fine golden hoppy beers they offer. Meeting old friends & the recollection of good memories were bad enough, without the unplanned meeting with my ex-, Angie, & her Parents who happened to be there when I called in. They were just as surprised to see me but made me feel as welcome as everyone else: It was like I had never been away.

A very friendly bar that is extremely welcoming. I really miss this place.
