Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
One of Magnolia's most-loved and asked-for beers, an over-the-top IPA we've been brewing since 1999. It's a hybrid, built around English Maris Otter malt and fermented with our English ale yeast but then packed with a powerful hop charge like an American IPA, including big dry hop character. American hops dominate but Maris Otter comes through with a malty counterpoint in a way not often found in this style of beer.

Had on tap at Magnolia. Served in a pint glass, the beer had already lost its head by the time it made it to the table. The scent was very piney. The beer was bronze in color (although it was very dark in there). A very enjoyable IPA. This seems to have become the summer of the IPAs and Magnolia makes a very good one. They have stiff competition in the SF area but this was really good. Maybe my only complaint was the lack of head and the beer seemed a little flat. This may have been by intention but I would definitely drink some more of these if given the opportunity. I tried the cask version of this IPA and this was definitely better.

12oz can, sample from the brewery.

A Hybrid of sorts but clearly leaning more American due to the hopping. Mildly hazed pale golden color, lacing stays around for a while. Aggressive hop nose of harsh citrus rind, dried grapefruit peel, hemp seeds, & tobacco. A whole lot of bitter here which I can really appreciate, no worries on wondering if this is an IPA. This is truly what West Coast IPAs are about IMO.

I tried this last week and found it to be one of the best Cask IPAs I've ever had.
The hops are right there start to finish and it is very drinkable. It was quite balanced though inspite of the hops. I quit after 2 as I had to drive and had never been to SF before.
Just wished I didn't live 2500 miles away because I sure would go back often.

Proving Ground IPA is the workhorse of the Magnolia Pub and Brewery; it's moderately priced ($6/pint for SF is average) and always available. English hops, low carbonation, maybe a nitro mix on tap here to make everything palatable to the restaurant goers. I get the feeling that this place is more about food, vibe, and profit than quality of the beer. Proving ground is by far the best beer they have, and I only rate it slightly above average. Most beers are in the 4-6% alcohol range and just watery representations of english or german styles.

Golden amber with a thick creamy off-white head that appears to be going nowhere. Smells like a hop bouquet. Much more pronounced than the non-cask version. Casking really mellowed this beer. It's much higher on the drinkability scale due to it's smoothness. Still it has that great lingering hop profile, just not the same "bite" to it.

Overall: I enjoyed this change to the normal proving ground, but I'll probably stick to the original.

[email protected] Pub and brewery, San Fransisco. Cascade and pine are the main flavours, typical US pale in many ways, some sweetness at the start finish dry and medium bitter. Not too bad, decent balance, probably one of the better beers at Magnolia, quite tasty.

This arrived as a cloudy off-gold color with huge bubbles but not very many of them. The lacing is evident but nothing special.

The smell is subdued for a beer with this much flavor, although I like the way it's not a simple grapefruit punch in the nose. The taste is great. I can't believe how many hops are in here without disrupting the balance of the flavor. It's not particularly heavy, either. I guess it's just an amazing blend of hops or something, because every last drop of bitterness makes its presence known but none of them are the least bit unsettling.

unfiltered orange-amber colored brew poured from a 12 oz sample bottle numbered batch #210. plenty of minute particles suspended in this beer. noseis faint - a little pink grapefruit, some toffee, something reminiscent of amaretto maybe, too. more grapefruit on the palate, and some nuttiness along with a dark breadiness-pumpernickel thing going on. carbonation is low, which detracts from the feel to me. the flavor was surprising at first, but grew on me as it warmed up ever so slightly. probably better off their taps. bitter finish let's you know this is an ipa, albeit with a more noticeable malt body.

I had this at Magnolia brew pub in San Francisco, CA. This was the cask version of my review (they had both draught and cask-conditioned). Same general characteristics of the draught - golden/amber color, no head this time, but tasted flatter and a bit more complex hops/fruit flavor came out in the taste. Also a bit more of a dry taste.

I love Smokestack as a place to hang out, but I haven't yet found a Magnolia beer I really love...
