This is a balanced rich Pale with lots of flavor. Excruciatingly good to drink. Cancel all afternoon appointments before trying this baby on for size. Yum - a perfect Pale, maybe my favorite solid West-coast brew I've had from Magnolia. Get it while it's fresh, as I can imagine the older barrels lose some of their zest. Classic brew that should not be missed.

Dark gold, decent white head of about 1/3" on it. Aroma made me wonder where's the hops and what is that after'smell' if you will?

Taste, remarkably bland except for the off flavor of slick wood almost approaching a butterscotch exterior. Still left wondering how a brewery that makes such good hoppy stuff has left me hangin'? Kind of has a bitter ashy resin that people seem to make fun of Mikkeller for.

I dunno, this just seemed off for what Magnolia usually brings to the table. Even though this was underwhelming, I'd give it another try based on their solid track record.

This arrived as a nice red and amber color with a good amount of head. It faded after a bit and left some minor lace.

It's very snappy and hoppy for regular pale ale; grapefruit and citrus definitely make their presence known. Yet, the flavor remains delicate. The mouthfeel is full and this stuff stays easy to drink for all its flavor.

had a hand-labeled sample bottle dropped off from the local guardian rep a couple of weeks ago, and finally got around to trying this pale ale. foamed up out of the bottle initially, and gave off the most nose then. poured an opaque amber color, with minimal head. not much of a hop presence wafting from the glass, but i do detect some caramel malts and maybe a hint of orange rind. first taste was pleasant, with elements of bitterness balancing the malt body. when i went back in for another, i get more of a butterscotch thing, with all the bitterness on the back end in a less than pleasing way. the buttery notes seem like a flaw - diacetyl from what i remember in my home brew book. low carbonation reminds me of a home brew that wasn't properly primed. also just noticed that the homemade label says 4.7%.

I had this on tap at Magnolia in San Francisco, CA. It was a dark amber/brown color, with a thick bubbly head and lots of carbonation and lacing. It had a smell of bitter hops. The taste up front was of alcohol but then blended with a strong bitter hops aftertaste.

On cask at Magnolia on Haight st, served in a 20oz imperial pint. Golden copper in colour, with a small soapy head. Very mild hop aroma, with some sweet malt. Some grapefruit, sweet toasty, bready malt and a bold bitterness. Smooth creamy mouthfeel, good drinkability. Good session ale from Magnolia.

Deep amber bordering on copperish, Nice white head with good retention. I don't know whether it's the way this place washes their glassware or what, but the beers do not lace much if any at all. Nice hoppy aroma of citrus and grapefruit. Very hoppy taste profile with a decent malt backbone. Very hop orientated, could be mistaken for an IPA. Zingy grapefruit notes come to the fore. Smooth cask mouthfeel and of course drinkability is above average. The most hoppy pale I have had. Footnote: For those who recall my annoyance at Magnolia playing rap, today the music was nice. My enjoyment of the pub and lunch was ten fold. Scarfed a sausage pizza with this fine beer.

Dark yellow, solid half inch of white head on the top, but the aroma was really devoid of hops.

Taste was bland, somewhat woody/earthy, questioning tap lines at this point. Still wondering where the hops are though even though I can feel bitterness and butterscotch in a very minimal way.

One of my least favorite Magnolia offerings.

Poured a nice, darker copper with a decent head and lacing. Excellent hop aroma. Cascades!

The malts are not neglected here. They came through in the aroma and were present in the taste. Tastes like they used a good variety in the process.

A good balance of flavors with an excellent finish. The carbonation was just about perfect, making this a smooth and very drinkable beer. I would rank this up there with other, well regarded APAs. Definitely one that I will drink again and again.

08/04/05- On cask at the Toronado in San Francisco, CA

Presentation- From cask into a standard pint glass.

Appearance- Golden-amber pour. Small and super creamy head with light lace.

Smell- Not much of a sniffer. Some muted hops, but not much of any roasted or any other malt scent.

Taste- Rather well hopped for a PA. There is some malt, just enough to hold it's own. But, the hops carry this beer. Fruity hops, but not super bitter ones. Very mild hops.

Mouthfeel- Can a cask beer have a bad mouthfeel? Smooth, low carbonation and light cream feeling.

Drinkability- Another winner from Magnolia. Super easy drinking Pale Ale.

Appearance: Medium amber cloudy body with a small head and some lacing

Smell: Nice grapefruit and floral tones on the nose

Taste: What you smell is what you get - grapefruit hoppiness

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a nice degree of carbonation

Drinkability: Another refreshing hoppy beverage from Magnolia.

Had on tap at the brewery.

Pours a deep coppery amber colour, very dark for a pale ale. Head is just off-white, leaving a pattern across the top of the glass. Patchy. Lacing is good however. Looks good enough.

Butterscotchy on the nose with a sharp citrus bite to cut through it. Rather sweet overall, with caramel characters coming in as well. Throughout all of this, it's not particularly full or robust either. Doesn't win me over.

Taste is smooth, but again, very light. Some bitterness through the centre, but it's matched and over-matched with caramel sweetness. Feel is nice, but the toffee and caramel characters are too much and the cleansing hop character too little. Unbalanced.

Not the worst beer I've tried, but not particularly exciting either. Like Adelaide: it's alright.

This pours a rich, warm amber-caramel glow with great foaming. There’s a sharp piney character at first but it mellows out into a rounded forest-y aroma. I get a smooth, piney flavor profile. Pine and lemon nuances come across, balanced by a caramel note on the finish. It’s an easy drinker and I enjoy what the cask brings out in this.
