Dark gold, decent white head of about 1/3" on it. Aroma made me wonder where's the hops and what is that after'smell' if you will?

Taste, remarkably bland except for the off flavor of slick wood almost approaching a butterscotch exterior. Still left wondering how a brewery that makes such good hoppy stuff has left me hangin'? Kind of has a bitter ashy resin that people seem to make fun of Mikkeller for.

I dunno, this just seemed off for what Magnolia usually brings to the table. Even though this was underwhelming, I'd give it another try based on their solid track record.

Dark yellow, solid half inch of white head on the top, but the aroma was really devoid of hops.

Taste was bland, somewhat woody/earthy, questioning tap lines at this point. Still wondering where the hops are though even though I can feel bitterness and butterscotch in a very minimal way.

One of my least favorite Magnolia offerings.

had a hand-labeled sample bottle dropped off from the local guardian rep a couple of weeks ago, and finally got around to trying this pale ale. foamed up out of the bottle initially, and gave off the most nose then. poured an opaque amber color, with minimal head. not much of a hop presence wafting from the glass, but i do detect some caramel malts and maybe a hint of orange rind. first taste was pleasant, with elements of bitterness balancing the malt body. when i went back in for another, i get more of a butterscotch thing, with all the bitterness on the back end in a less than pleasing way. the buttery notes seem like a flaw - diacetyl from what i remember in my home brew book. low carbonation reminds me of a home brew that wasn't properly primed. also just noticed that the homemade label says 4.7%.

Light copper color with a good head and great lacing. Spot-on for the style.

Smells like Amarillo hops. Good hop smell, but not enough malt to balance it out.

The taste is th same way. Not enough malt presence, but
beautiful hop flavor.

Feels a little on the thin side, but not enough to hurt it really.

Really drinkable. Would definitely order again and again. A few extra scoops of malt into the mash wouldn't hurt, though.

I had this on tap at Magnolia in San Francisco, CA. It was a dark amber/brown color, with a thick bubbly head and lots of carbonation and lacing. It had a smell of bitter hops. The taste up front was of alcohol but then blended with a strong bitter hops aftertaste.

Had on tap at the brewery.

Pours a deep coppery amber colour, very dark for a pale ale. Head is just off-white, leaving a pattern across the top of the glass. Patchy. Lacing is good however. Looks good enough.

Butterscotchy on the nose with a sharp citrus bite to cut through it. Rather sweet overall, with caramel characters coming in as well. Throughout all of this, it's not particularly full or robust either. Doesn't win me over.

Taste is smooth, but again, very light. Some bitterness through the centre, but it's matched and over-matched with caramel sweetness. Feel is nice, but the toffee and caramel characters are too much and the cleansing hop character too little. Unbalanced.

Not the worst beer I've tried, but not particularly exciting either. Like Adelaide: it's alright.

On cask at Magnolia on Haight st, served in a 20oz imperial pint. Golden copper in colour, with a small soapy head. Very mild hop aroma, with some sweet malt. Some grapefruit, sweet toasty, bready malt and a bold bitterness. Smooth creamy mouthfeel, good drinkability. Good session ale from Magnolia.

This beer comes just a shade lighter than ruby red. Nice soft white head. Mild aroma of citrus and maybe pine. Not full on generic west coast pale ale aroma. Flavor begins with nice firm hop bitterness. Less bitter than Stone Pale Ale. Bitterness fades quickly and gives way to a huge wave of maltiness. Medium bodied.

Overall: excellent balance of malt and hops.

08/04/05- On cask at the Toronado in San Francisco, CA

Presentation- From cask into a standard pint glass.

Appearance- Golden-amber pour. Small and super creamy head with light lace.

Smell- Not much of a sniffer. Some muted hops, but not much of any roasted or any other malt scent.

Taste- Rather well hopped for a PA. There is some malt, just enough to hold it's own. But, the hops carry this beer. Fruity hops, but not super bitter ones. Very mild hops.

Mouthfeel- Can a cask beer have a bad mouthfeel? Smooth, low carbonation and light cream feeling.

Drinkability- Another winner from Magnolia. Super easy drinking Pale Ale.
