Magnolia is as much a part of the San Francisco beer experience as Toronado down the street is. This brewpub is a city icon and lies in the heart of the Haight, a neighborhood famous for hippies and potheads. After catching a few at Toronado, Marc77 and I decided to walk about 5 blocks up the street to check it out firsthand.

On a thursday night around dinner time this place was busy. The building has an oldschool vibe with huge windows, nice booths and tables with chalkboards with beer selection in all the key places. An awesome mural snakes around the room and is very Haight in nature, cool psycodelic stylings. On an interesting side note this kid dressed in all black and wearing a hockeymask kept rolling by on a Razor scooter. Weird, but an essential part of the experience.

We sat ourselves at a window table and waiting for the service. Our waitress seemed flustered when she arrived and didnt stay long enough for us to really order anything. The place was crowded, but c'mon, hire more servers if that's the case. The service was spotty the whole time and flagging her down was a chore.

The selection is damn good for a brewpub this size. About 20 offerings including a full menu, about 8 things on the chalkboard in addition and five cask ales. Yes, cask ales. In anyhoo, Marc had an IPA and I had a six beer sampler. The IPA was good, very good. My sampler was a mixed bag. I had a pale ale, a mild, a brown cask ale, an oyster stout, an ESB and a kolsch i think. They ranged from pedestrian to interesting. None of mine were mindblowing, but the oyster stout was tasty. The ESB was DIACETYL city, pass the popcorn style. On the whole, their range was exceptional, how many places have milds on tap? or even at all? but the actual quality wasn't anything superduper.

I bought a bowl of chili. It was delicious. In typical San Francisco fashion, it wasn't just a bowl of chili, but Niman Ranch beef with cilantro sour cream on top and polenta bread on the side. Damn hippies. But it was good chili, expensive, but filling.

Magnolia is a fine place to catch a few and it is located in such a cool part of the city that it is a fine addition to a bizarre journey. A bit pricey on the food and service was curt and dodgy, but worth the visit for sure.

I found Magnolia while walking around the Haight-Ashbury area and stopped in for a couple of beers. They had 17 taps, including 5 cask offerings, plus a guest tap. I had the mild and the porter, which were good if not outstanding. Service was typical, decent bar service. The vibe is very pubby with lots of dark wood and a lived-in feel. It's a neat place if you're in the area.

Located on Haight Street, this is in it. Really cool look to the place. So much history. Neat in the winter when the windows fog up inside. Beer is solid, they've been doing this awhile and are reliable.

Service is good too, never come across that uppity SF waitstaff so I'm entitled thing here. They work for their money. Selection doesn't yield too much weird stuff, an occasional gruit or gem from the cellar, but other than that, usual styles for the most part. Good food.

Very cool English style brewery and BBQ place. Beers are only good-to-average, but the place is pretty cool. BBQ is excellent, but you pay $$$$ for it. Beer is more fairly priced.

Lots of English style ales. Lots of hand pumps. $4 imperial pints since it was Tuesday. Pretty chill place with and English theme. If you like bitters and Esb, this is worth checking out.

Great location right in the middle of Haight area. Busy pub with dark wood cosy vibe. Beers selection is heavy on the English side and doesn't suffer for it. Had 5 casks on when I was there and about 15 others on draft. Staff friendly and food great, especially the cheeses.
