German Pilsner | 8.00% ABV

Barrel House Z (BHZ)
Massachusetts, United States

Notes: This beer is retired; no longer brewed. This collaboration pairs traditional Bavarian pilsner style with a handful of summer’s most memorable flavors. Pilsner and Munich malt. Nugget, Pacifica, and Mandarina Bavarian hops. Add juniper berry & citrus peel. Our first release is aged in tequila barrels and our second is aged in Bully Boy rum barrels. A refreshing pour either way.

Our first collab is with Doug MacNair, a friend from Harpoon. He arrived there by way of Germany, Washington, and New Hampshire. We thought Weymouth would round out his list. Glad he agreed.

1st release: 1-mos aged, tequila
2nd release: 1-mos aged, rum

Could be interesting, light pilsner aged in tequila for a month... Collab #1, 6.2%, bottled 4/18/17

Light fizzy head fades quickly, a touch of lacing, very clear pilsner yellow color.

Nose starts piney and junipery, like a gin, big grassy hops mixed in as well, a bit earthy from hops and spices, a little toasted oaky, mild green tequila, a sweet candy agave, and sweet toasted malt, little citrus orange zest in the background.

Taste starts with the juniper right away again, a big gin like flavor, piney and spicy hops, a little grassy as well, some citrus in there with a little orange zest, brings an almost winterberry bitter minty thing, a little toasted oak, a hint of tequila but a green very young tequila and agave nectar, sweet candy notes.

Mouth is med bod, a decent fluffy carb, hint of booze warmth.

Overall way too much going on and all over the place, but not too bad when all is said and done.

16 oz. can - ITB - Batch 2

Pours clear gold with a creamy frothy white foam head. Smells like slightly funky floral juniper berries, lemon peel, orange citrus, toasted bready biscuity honey malt, some minty tobacco spice, with floral earthy herbal grassy pine. Tastes like juniper berries, lemon peel, orange citrus, toasted bready biscuity honey malt, some minty tobacco spice, with floral earthy herbal grassy pine. Feels medium bodied, creamy and smooth with moderate crisp carbonation. Overall a nice and unique refreshing pilsner.

Pours clear, gold in color, with 1/2 inch head. Taste is tequila, big juniper, berries, bourbon, pilsner malt, and lime. Medium-light bodied and sweet. Makes for a very good, tropical style pilsner. One of the better beers I have had from the brewery. Worth seeking out.

Really enjoy the nose. Juniper. Hint of tequila. Burst of gin aromatics out of the gate. Fairly bland finish. Well made clean body that allows all of the aromatics a chance to shine.

Tequila barrel aged

This is a crazy ass Pilsner. Definitely wins the original style approach.

Poured a 1F head in a Pilsner glass with a reddish copper color. Carbonation bubbles from the bottom.

Intense aroma: tequila, oak, citrus , lime. The hop profile is great. A variety of flavors.

Smooth MF of a Pilsner with a slight bitterness, light body.

The taste is intense like the aroma: more berry, oak, tequila.

Light bitter finish with a tequila bitterness.

This is quite something. I'll look for a another bottle, or try the rum barrel aged.

An acquired taste due to the aging process in the barrels. The flavor is a bit overwhelming at first taste with an alcohol sting that is enhanced by the aroma. The beer seems to taste better the more you drink, so if at first you are not a fan, give it a few more sips to get used to the taste. Overall, not one of my favorite beers, but it is refreshing.

BHZ currently has 4 versions of Sunny & 79, I got the taster of the version aged two weeks in tequila barrels. First off, I hate gin, so the thought of a ginned pilsner sounded terrible. I couldn't have been more wrong lol. The combination of the light pilsner flavors, gin herbs and a hint of tequila was excellent.

Light color and mouth feel is in line with a typical pilsner. The smell and taste were above and beyond any pils I've had before.

Fair warning, they mostly do barrel aged beers and because of that, as the supply of barrels changes, so do their beers. So if you find something you like, get it while you can.

* second tasting edit: bought a crowler of the 1 month tequila aged version on 10/12/16 and drank it as soon as I got home (less than 10 minutes). It's a little more gin-ny than I remember from the 2 week version I had last, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Nose is mostly tequila while taste is mostly gin herbs and some pilsner/bread flavor. Still a transparent golden yellow color, still crushable; your taste buds definitely feel the last sip as good as the first.

Pale amber golden in color. Light, clean and somewhat fruity. Dry finish. Some floral notes, lavender and juniper berries. Getting that melon fruit flavor that I usually get with tequila barrels. Pretty good effort.

L - Slightly dark yellow with transparent body and three fingers of white head

S - Tequila everywhere, but with no heat or alcohol. Tough to pick up the base beer.

T - The tequila is rich and smooth with no alcohol taste. The barrel adds some oak and vanilla for good measure. The base pilsner has doughy malts and spicy hops with z citrus zest finish.

F - Light and crisp. No alcohol presence. Dangerously drinkable. Slightly lacking in carbonation.

O - Impressive first beer out of the gate for this brewery. Tequila kept the base beer drinkable while adding tons of flavor. Can't wait for more from Barrel House Z!

At Union Brewhouse! Local beer is best beer. Very interesting from the former brewmaster of Harpoon, never afraid to experiment...look no further than his 100 Barrel series.

A decent pills with juniper berries gives it an astringent taste that is confusing but is sort of like a gin and tonic mixed with beer. Tequila barrel kicks in at the end. Brewed once I hear and that might be enough for me. I might stop by for a crawler on my way home and then say farewell to this unique offering from Weymouth's #1 brewery? Welcome to town, BZ..

Crowler consumed the day after the packaging date of 7/15. Pale gold pour with a thin, quickly disappearing head. Nice gin-like nose with a hint of the barrel. The base beer is solid, if a bit bigger than one would expect with the style. Taste was quite ginny as well, with noble hops in the finish. Unfortunately, the extremely low carbonation killed this drinking experience for me.
I'm hoping the carbonation issue was simply a matter of not having the canning line dialed in yet and not a stylistic choice. I'm anxious to check out their future offerings.

Brewer's description: This collaboration pairs pilsner style with some of summer’s best flavors. We used Pilsner and Munich malt. Nugget, Pacifica, and Mandarina Bavarian hops. We also added juniper berry and citrus peel. And then, we gave the happy beer a tequila-barrel kiss.

Great tequila on the nose, but not strong on the taste. Very smooth drinker with a nice finish. Low carbonation is its worst attribute. Excellent first offering by this brewery.
