After 3 pints in the excellent Rat & Ratchet, my friend Phil eventually raised the question of making the very difficult decision to move on & try out Huddersfields newest Real Ale Pub; the Star Inn. Fortunately, it is only a 5 min. walk. From the Rat you take a right downhill, cross the road, over the bridge, take the left fork & hey presto – there it was, Folly Hall (a building), the pub is on your left.

I had heard much about this Pub from many of my CAMRA friends in England whilst I was back home on vacation, they had all told me to reconnoiter this place if I got chance. So I was excited to check it out & had high hopes. I was not let down.

On entering the Pub, the bar is furnished to a high standard. Thick carpets, a deeply polished wooden bar & clean shiny brass fittings were in contrast to the Rat & Ratchet. The Bar is L-shaped & in the middle of the Pub, which whilst one room in essence, has plenty of dividing walls & snug screens to give it a cozy feel. We elected to sit at the Bar Stools, which gave us chance to chat to the affable Landlord.

There are, incredibly for the size of this place, 7 Cask-Conditioned Hand-pulled Beers & a Real Draft Cider. Sells the highly recommended Timothy Taylor’s Landlord & Black Sheep as permanent beers, the rest are all Guests. These are always from small Independent Breweries which is nice to see, it has sold over 150 variants to date. There are No offerings from the Big Boys here. All the Real Ales I tried were in excellent condition, and it was not until we got our 2nd Pint that I realized an interesting range of around 20+ Belgium & German bottled beers. Prices for these were very reasonable.

There is an outside drinking area at the back of the Pub. This well furnished area is also where the Star Inn held its 1st Beer Festival last Summer, the 36 beers & outside bar proved such a success, that the event may be repeated at a greater frequency.

The Landlord & his Wife (Tyrone & Sam) have obviously worked very hard to turn this once run-down back street boozer, into a small Real Ale Pub, which is a true Free-House. They were very friendly & made me & my friend feel quite at home. Sure, it was a quiet Tuesday afternoon session, but it was genuine courtesy as opposed to small-talk. Indeed, they had won Pub of the Season Award (Spring 02) from the local CAMRA Branch shortly after opening last year.

If you get to the Rat & Ratchet, you must make the 5-minute walk downhill & come here also.
