12 oz bottle poured into a Duvel tulip.
7.3% ABV, 26 IBUs, Enjoy By 03/08/14 printed on shoulder.

A - Dark, dark brown, this beer's dark stained wood color only shines with clarity when held up to light. Fragile off white foam lightly clings to the glass' surface when the skim retires to a creamy halo.

S - Malt rich, this deeply complex beer has undercurrents of chocolate covered coffee bean behind thickly sliced, lightly toasted, spongy marble rye bread drizzled with a caramel and toffee blend. A delicate waft of smoked prunes rises through the finish of this Bière de Garde.

T - Hops remain absent, save for balance and earthy spice undertones found behind the beer's rich malt profile. Toasted rye bread with traces of sweetness following behind captivate the flavor with quiet notes of smoked nuts and cocoa-dusted coffee bean finish out.

M - Soft carbonation wanders through the mouth keeping the beer's overarching maltiness from becoming to sweet or full-bodied while dry, mildly spicy hops have the final say with a kiss of bitterness for balance.

O - Summit's Bière de Garde is a fine malt focused, dark representation of the style in that malt complexity shines with it's sweet, bready, and light chocolaty notes. The beer exhibits no yeast character or aged character though, and drinks somewhat like a stronger bock (though not doppelbock) perfect for the colder months ahead.

From tasting notes. L: The beer pours brilliant chestnut under a 2” foam cap. It is lacy S: Grainy malt aromas spread out from the bottle as soon as you pop the cap. T: Several layers of grain and malt flavors evoke harvest time. Malt, fresh bread, sugar, spice, traces of anise, a hint of cocoa, and hops in the background. F: Creamy, medium high carbonation medium body. The carbonation is very fine and soft. O: Full flavor and delightful to drink.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Duvel tulip glass. Bottle says enjoy by 03/08/14.

Appearance: Pours a deep and dark brownish mahogany with a moderate amount of bubbles. About one finger of off white head that fades into a thin patchy layer. Leaves a decent amount of lacing around the glass.

Smell: A toasty, yeasty, and sweet malt driven aroma with hints of dark fruits. French and Belgian yeast upfront. Toasted malts with hints of biscuit, grains, sweet toffee, caramel, chocolate, coffee, cracker, and slight smoke. Big dark fruit presence with hints of dark cherries, figs, dates, plum, and raisin. Subtle hints of spice and earthy hops. A pretty solid malty aroma.

Taste: Like the aroma, a very yeasty and toasty malt forward taste with good notes of dark fruit. Good taste of the French and Belgian yeast upfront with a little spice. Toasted malts with a taste of biscuit, grains, toffee, caramel, and cracker. Roasty notes of chocolate, coffee, and little smoke. Good dark fruit presence with notes of dark cherries, figs, dates, raisin, and plum. Slight taste of brown sugar and some subtle earthy hops. A pretty good taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Creamy and smooth with a nice light touch of spice. Finishes fairly dry.

Overall: A pretty good take on the Garde style. Good use of yeast with some really nice dark fruit and chocolate notes.

Bottle into tulip

Appearance- Dark with amber hues when held to light, white head

Aroma- Toasted bread, dark fruits, a mustyness, slight roast, herbal hop presence

Flavor- Toasted bread, dark malts, bigger dark fruit here, fig, date, sweet but balanced well, herbal hops present at the end, finishes dry

Mouthfeel- medium, good carbonation

Overall- Really like this beer, although I could have used more peppery notes for the style, but solid, and nice to see this style in a sixer for a change. Fits the season, worth trying
