Soft notes of chocolate malt entertain the idea that there must be chocolate malt, or at least a dash of roasted malt. Wait the hops are giving me that chocolate aroma?!

I can not say enough about how remarkable this beer is. Extremely well executed and brings into light what may be the most important new, experimental hop in years.

To the naive tongue, this comes across as a brown ale. A damn fine one at that.

Bravo Damian McConn, bravo.

12oz brown bottle, sample from the brewery.

Massive head with a great head retention, bright and clear dark copper hue. Very toasty, fresh bread, and biscuity nose and palate. Hint of lemony hop zest and alcohol in the middle and dry throughout. Packed with soooo much flavor, a lovely malt bomb and warming as well. Not all Mild Ales need to be small quaffable brews, loving this ale.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Tulip glass.

Appearance: Clear copper with foamy white head and sticky lacing.

Smell: Toffee, fruit and toast.

Taste: Fairly sweet toffee and dark fruit taste. Some definite biscuit and toast notes. Some light citrus and spicy notes from the hops.

Feel: Moderate carbonation, medium to full body, semi-dry finish.

Overall: A little on the sweet side without the complexity of a Barleywine or Old Ale. Still pretty tasty and warming.

I will need to try this again at various ages as Summit suggests cellaring this to become more like an Old Ale.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tall Summit pint glass.

Appearance: Color is amber orange. Moderate amount of bubbles and about one finger of off white head that settles into a thin patch.

Smell: A toasty, fruity, and sweet malt forward aroma with hints of toffee and dried fruit. Toasted malt with hints of biscuit, toast, toffee, caramel, yeast, and slight roast. Sweet hints of sugar. Fruit hints of apple, banana, and stone fruit. Fruit hints are pretty subtle. A pretty solid malty aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a nicely sweet, toasty, and fruity malt forward taste with notes of toast, toffee, and fruit. Toasted malt with bready notes of toast, biscuit, toffee, caramel, yeast, and a slight note of chocolate. Dried fruit undertones with notes of stone fruit along with some banana and apple. Sweet notes of sugar. Subtle hop presence. A pretty nice taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Creamy and smooth with a drying finish.

Overall: A pretty solid take on the Mild style. Good toasty malt notes with some nice fruit undertones.

Surprisingly dark, reddish amber brew, extremely clear, topped with a dirty white head. Good size, good retention, nice, short-lived lacing.

Aroma is malt-dominant: caramel, toffee, and biscuit, touched with honey. Not unlike a graham cracker. Light and floral hops.

Lots of dry biscuit, immediately giving way to huge waves of caramel and sweet brown sugar.

Silky, extremely drinkable brew. Long cloying retention; medium bodied. No alcohol presence at all.

A touch too sweet; could use a little more bitterness for balance. Very good beer overall.

7.2% abv? My old CAMRA mates would be aghast... Having said that these tended to be this way to some extent back in the day based on some articles I've read. One of my favorite ales over was Sarah Hughes Ruby Red mild & it clocked in at 6.5% if memory serves me...

Pours amber/caramel with 2 fingers of cream colored head. Superior head retention & lacing

S: Pears and slight toastyness

T: Follows the nose, some breadyness, a little bit of booze & woody hops as well up front. Toastyness & toffee, a little dryness, more pears plus dryness. Finishes dry & fruity with leafy hops & more toastyness

MF: Fairly chewy, moderate carbonation, skews fruitty

Drinks fairly easy, not sure I would buy this again. The powdery dryness does little for me

Poured from a bottle into a pub pint glass. Amber color, 1 inch cream white head that lingers. As it recedes, it leaves sticky lacing. Low to moderate carbonation. Malty aroma a bit bready with some fruit. Malt initial taste, just a bit roasty with fruity presence also, transitioning to bitter, bready aftertaste. Definitely English in the balance. Feel is initially tingly/ bitter with a thickish texture. It is a very good English-style mild, in spite of being too high in ABV for the style. It does not in any way taste boozy, however. I'll be stocking up on this one before it disappears forever, and perhaps I'll cellar a couple of sixers, too. Once again, Summit nails it with the Union series. Congrats to Summit brewer Damian McConn!

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. Pours red amber with a small white head that laves good lacing. Smells of dark roasted grain with predominant chocolate and a tad of caramel. Tastes of chocolate and caramel, very deep taste. Beer is full bodied and just enough carbonation to make it smooth. Overall, a superb beer.
