Formerly Unchained Series Batch No. 23 - Dark Infusión (A Coffee Milk Stout)

A rich, full-bodied imperial milk stout with sweet, roasted notes, Dark Infusion features a gravity-defying grain bill of six different malts plus kettle additions of lactose for additional sweetness and body. Balanced by Pilgrim and Fuggle hops from the U.K., renowned throughout the cosmos for their rounded bitterness and spice, Dark Infusion is made even bolder and more complex with the infusion of smooth, cold-brewed coffee at the time of packaging — with the Milky Way’s best Brazilian beans provided by Saint Paul’s Blackeye Roasting Company.

Pours a deep dark brown-to-black color with over a finger of tan head. The nose has a nice coffee roast essence. The flavor also has solid notes of coffee and roasted malt. The finish thins out a bit, but that is a minor point of criticism.

This is a very drinkable offering. It is straight-forward, strong and solid. No bells and whistles - just a creamy and tasty stout.

2018 notes:
Solid blackness, utter darkness, terrifically opaque, with a creamy brown head on top, leaving lace.

In the nose: Cream. Cola. Nuts aplenty. Toffee, coffee, malty goodness. A little toasty-toasty, and oh, my goodness, such a lot of nice-ness. Delightful.

In the mouth: Such sweetness, much malt, with abundant roast. Plentiful coffee, and massive malt, mixed with cream and such substantial smooth. Many layer of deliciousness. No fooling. Treats upon treats. Delish, upon delish. I would turn to this again and again.

Scrappy notes from May 1, 2020.
8.5%ABV 40IBU Jet black with a tan head, coffee, caramel, chocolate, graham cracker. Brazilian coffee added cold at bottling. Very smooth, lightly sweet and rather creamy/milky from the lactose with darkly roasted caramel malts and it's not too heavy. Quite excellent.

12oz can, review from notes:

This reminds me a lot of their other milk stout, but with a heavy coffee addition (obviously). This makes it an inferior beer in my opinion. I'd rather drink the OG any day. That said, this is still a great beer

Pours almost black with a medium cream colored head. Coffee, vanilla and burnt malt smell. Solid backbone of roasted malt with mild coffee and some chocolate. Not thick or syrupy it finishes clean and crisp, a thinner finish than expected by the taste but that’s a good thing, A very drinkable stout. Excellent.

Dark Infusion pours black, with a long lasting, creamy, lacing tan head. Aroma is sweet, hints of coffee. Flavor is sweet, lots of lactose sugar, very very creamy, with hints of sweet rich coffee. Good body and feel. Overall, its a very creamy sweet beer, great milk stout base, with noticeable coffee notes.

Should have saved this for a weekend morning. So delicious. Deep, dark pour with a caramel colored head. Massive coffee on the nose. Smooth and creamy fresh-roasted coffee on the tongue. Great for a cold, winters night!

This beer comes across very heavy in the roasted coffee flavors but has some decent underlying milk sweetness. It's not syrupy, but it has a decent body.

12oz can, sample from the brewery.

Pour a beautiful light tan head on top of a pitch black brew. Mild molasses sweetness in the nose and on the palate, a mellow but lasting coffee tone from start to finish. A bit of roasted grain suggestions dark chocolate and slightly burnt toast. Kiss of alcohol lends a faint dark berry flavor. Modest hopping but its there to help with the balance. Creamy with a long lasting smoothness. Very drinkable and extremely well balanced. Loving this beer ...

Poured from a can into a tulip.

Pours very viscous and dark; proper for sure. An excellent khaki head gives way to some excellent cottony lacing.

Simple aromas of chocolate, dark coffee, anise and earthy hops.

Milk and dark chocolate flavors melded with coffee and plenty of lactose sweetness. Mild earthy hops in midstream and at the fnish where some warming booze arrives as well.

Certainly more than medium bodied, it's still not as heavy as one might have thought on first blush.

It's hard to imagine an imperial sweet stout being simple, but this is elemental and straight. Coffee, chocolate, herb, mild hops and booze, all in a nearly perfect balance.

12 oz. can with a smudgy March date on the bottom.

Black. The nose is rich coffee with undercurrents of chocolate & malt. The two plus months in the can haven’t hurt the coffee aroma any.

Dark Infusion could almost be confused with an iced coffee. Massive coffee hit is cut by gentle sweetness of the malts, cocoa powder, & a touch of lactose on the finish. What really holds this back is the paper-thin body.

Good taste but man, I’d have guessed this was around 4% & not 8.5%. Decent enough.

Really great beer. Smooth and delicious. Great hint of chocolate especially as it warms. The coffee flavor is nice, not overpowering. Surprised it's 8.5% as it's very smooth and easy drinking. Really enjoyed this one.

12oz can. Poured out an opaque, jet-black color with a light brown head of bubbly foam. It smelled of rich, roasted coffee, chocolate, vanilla and toffee. Great roasted malt and coffee taste with subtle chocolate notes.
