Boy...I usually don't read any other reviews before I post my own, but here I just wanted to skim briefly, just to see if others were sharing the epiphany I had after stumbling upon a twelve pack of this. Alas, not too many! But I guess that's what these reviews are all about. I'm far from the most experienced reviewer in these hallowed halls, but I have no choice other than to call 'em like I see 'em.
This beer rocked my world.
It was actually my first foray into the ESB style, but the immediate thought I had when I sniffed it (confirmed when I started drinking it down) was: (local micro) Surly Bender (a Brown Ale, I think). There's a lot going on in my glass! A deep hue, alternately amber to brown; swirling and bubbling, tranluscent and mysterious. A very dense, floral, bitter aroma. Then, the taste: slightly sweet, with a complex blend of what I taste as toffee, coffee, & caramel malts, with some sort of earthy, pine-nut overtone and a light carbonation. This is all accompanied by a wonderful, welcome blast of bitterness worthy of a fine pilsener.
It is to my great discouragement that brewing of this limited-edition beer was wrapped up this past summer. In the meantime, I will be hard to reach by phone, as I call throughout the Twin Cities looking for a liquor store with this still in stock.
