Poured from 12oz bottle into SABL glass.
A. 2 finger head. Color is dark cola brown. Good retention. Decent lacing.
S. Toasted malt, caramel, toffee, heavy malt smell.
T. Roasted malt, caramel, toffee. Tastes good. Something that is hard to pin down or describe, maybe this is Heather? Graininess to the taste. Almost spicy. This is unique.
M. Medium bodied. Clean finish. Medium carbonation.
D. Drinkability is high. This is a pretty tasty, unique beer. Should be a regular offering.

Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #35 (Dec 2009):
Batch #2 of their Unchained Series. A black veil pulled over a dark shade of garnet; tiny bub- bles with some sticky lacing on the glass. Warm aroma of carob, ripe figs, toasted granola and brown bread. Deep smoothness. So dark and toasty, a pleasurable beer when pushing into late fall/early winter. Roasted flavors run right to the cusp of being burnt, like a marsh- mallow on the brink of complete combustion. Quick, spicy note from the hops and alcohol, and a kiss of heather in the middle. A little grainy, toasted and roasted with unsweetened chocolate. Bready with some fruit, warming alcohol in the finish.
Big and bold, complex and a great sipper. Worthy of the 90-Shilling designation, very much so.

Served in a Dogfish Head snifter.
I've gotta unbury my thistle goblet sometime... This guy pours a rather dark ruby-brown topped by less than a half-finger of ecru foam. The nose comprises caramel, toffee, rye bread, light cocoa powder, brown sugar, greens, and fusels. The taste is nearly identical, though the 'buds get some oak and walnuts in there as well. The body is a straight medium, with a light carbonation and a light syrupy feel. If only it were heavier and/or thicker, it would be much better, as the flavors can't linger for very long at all and seem dulled, muted. Overall, a bit of a disappointment, but a decent wee heavy nonetheless.

This beer pours a dark redwood color topped by a generous finger of thick whipped foam that is off-white in color. The smell mainly consists of smoked malts and a bit of cocoa and roast. There is a slight peppery smell to the beer as well. The taste is still the good deal of smoke that was in the aroma along with the cocoa notes. In addition to that is a grassy/earthy taste that I assume to be the hint of heather that this is said to be brewed with. The mouthfeel is a little flat for my liking, but this overall is still a good beer.

Thanks alot to supercolter for this one!!!
12oz stub into a snifter glass
A- Pours a real dark brown with a nice thin 1 finger white head that left no lacing on the way down.
S- Dark malts and roasted barley up front with some spice and wheat like notes in the background with some slight toffee hints.
T- Bitter hops and that wheat like flavor dominate up front with some nice scottish roasted malts and barley to bring up the rear and destroy your palate. Slight fruitiness and toffee.
M- Bitter medium body with moderate carbonation and a little bit of a dry finish.
