This is my quintessential Bavarian Bierhalle. Augustiner beer is one of my all time favorites. Everytime I am in Muenchen this is an absolute must do. The Schweinebraten was amazing, as well as the mushroom in herbed cream sauce. The service was impeccable, and friendly. I was curious if i would have to try the little bit of German i know, but, they all spoke excellent english, and brought an english menu. Although in the middle of Oktoberfest, they still spent enough time to discuss the items on the menu to everyones satisfaction. The beer was served quickly. The prices are actually reasonable considering being in Germany during Oktoberfest.

As one other person noted, the HofBrauhaus is always extremely packed, and the Augustiner Grossgaststaette is huge, so they can accommodate a large group and still not feel like it's too packed.

I would highly recommend this to anyone visiting Muenchen. The best of German Gemuetlichkeit !! (German Hospitality).

Came here with my wife during a recent trip to Brussels and Munich.

Tried the following:
Augustiner Edelstoff (draft)
Augustiner Dunkel (draft)

Both beers were drinking beautifully. Tap selection was limited but the quality was there. Bustling beer hall atmosphere, super busy on our visit, to the point where we had difficulty finding seats. But once we did snag a table, we had a great conversation with a couple from Northern Ireland. It ended up being one of the highlights of the trip. Service was fine as the waiter was efficient in grabbing our drinks. Our overall experience was very good, and we would probably come back.

Totally enjoyed this place. Dined there late on a Thursday night. Service was quick and helpful. The food was delicious. Got a huge plate of German sausages with potatoes. Beer was delicious. Lots of great Augustiner lagers and several bottles. Nice open and airy beer hall. I will come back next time I am in Munich.

Hofbrau Biergarten was overrun with tourists (like me) so my family and I ended up here. Great convivial attitude throughout staff and clientele. We had the famous Munchen Weisswurst and some great Munich lagers. Big Bierhalle with room for lots of beer drinkers. I highly recommend!

Right near the heart of Marienplatz it is everything you expect from a Munich beer hall. The servers are truly professionals, and obviously there are no language barriers as it is a major tourist attraction. The food was great, we made sure to stop there most days and get the Goulash. The ambiance definitely reflects the reason the reason that the Germans have a word for coziness, Gemutilichkeit. Awesome place that is a must for anyone stopping in Munich!

This place is as bavarian as it gets. The decor is furnished with giant wooden tables, exposed beams, mounted deer heads. It is very touristy, but is also worth experiencing. I went there several times for a quick beer and a pretzel and enjoyed myself. Like always the wait staff keeps you "waiting", but it is something you will have to deal with in germany. I'm not sure how the food is, when I ate there I was extremely drunk... like stumbling around and I ordered a german cheese platter.... German cheese is very poignant and almost caused me to vomit. this was not the fault of this wonderful bierhall, but instead my own drunkeness

Visited at the end of October, 2011. Sat inside in the beer hall near the entrance; only having a couple beers.

The interior is what you'd expect of a normal Munich beer hall. Dark wooden paneling and trim, shared seating which are half chairs and half benches.

Several beers available on tap.

Menu has a pretty good selection but didn't try and of the food.

The service was not very friendly and extremely slow, even for normal German service. Was not tremendously busy, seats were filled with a lot of tourists.

The place is huge & was the first place we visited after arriving in Munich. Tonnes of seating but it was pretty busy and it was still only around 5pm. The beer selection was pretty good with around 7 or 8 choices plus a Maibock that wasn't listed. The service was good with a waiter seating us quickly, recommending various beers & food selections. The food itself was pretty good, the sausage platter I ordered being one of the best I tried in Munich. The value was also reasonable & about par in price with most places in the surrounding area if not slightly cheaper than some of the well known places. I enjoyed it so much I was back again the next days for more drinks.

This Bierhalle is not too far from Marienplatz. It is a huge, huge place with an ample amount of seating yet it was nearly packed to capacity. We decided to go here after Schneider was completely full and sent us away.

I only had a few nibbles of one of the sausages, but it seemed liek standard fare for food. The beer menu had about 7-8 beers. I got a half liter of dunkel vom faß and a bottle of pils.

The prices were as they are in all of the tourist areas a bit expensive but the service was very friendly at this particular hall.

It is a pretty good Bierhall to check out.

Visited in May '10 on my tour of Europe for dinner and a few beers and loved this place. Enormous hall with wooden tables and bench seating, just like the Hofbräuhaus down the road. The decor set the mood perfectly for some good beers and food. The beer selection was OK, but they were incredibly satisfying. The service was excellent, given our large party and was able to serve us our food very quickly. The food was delicious and made a good addition to an already fun evening. Next time I get to Munich I would consider making a return trip.

Nice Bavarian atmosphere with prompt service.
Large, often shared, wooden tables where one can meet new friends. Nice rustic decor and south German theme. Perfect place for Gemütlichkeit! Did I mention few to if any tourist, I would drink here over the Hofbräuhaus any day.

Servers often need to be flagged down but that is to be expected. Drinks are received quickly. A few different types of beers are offered from Augustiner. This quite normal and the beers are various styles and are all delicious. For being in the city center, the prices are quite reasonable. When visiting München my Bavarian friends prefer this place, it's a less known, yet equally pleasant gem. Highly recommend!

This place in the city centre of munich is surprisingly reasonably priced but the selection of beer is small albeit very good.

You can get Dunkles vom Fass which is probably your best choice but the Helles vom Fass is very fresh and good as well. Avoid there weisse Franziskaner is lengths better!

The food selection is good and tatsy and the service is very friendly and most importantly prompt!!!

No waiting for your Dunkles vom Fass here. In all worth going there I d say. The building as such is a definite highlight.

made this the last stop one of the evenings spent in munich last week. very authentic and traditional looking decor. service was good, nothing spectacular, if you don't count the number of liter mugs our server carried with two hands, which must have been in the neighborhood of 10. beer was quite good; had the edelstoff and the maximator - both were tasty. didn't try the food, although the pretzels were tasty, as they always are. nice place to stop by for a couple liters (or so) of augustiner.

Your classic Munich beer hall that serves bratwurts, weisswurts, schnitzel, etc. and carries exclusively Augustiner beers. When I was there on October 18, 2009, they carried the helles, dunkel, and weissbier. Awesome architecture with arched ceilings and big, heavy wooden doors. Big tables that you share with strangers - kind fun.

The waitresses are dressed up in traditional German garb and they charge you 0.90 per pretzel, which are sitting in a basket on the table begging you to take one. The waitress will bring you a jar of mustard if you ask.

After a long overnight flight, then drinks and dinner at Weisses Brauhaus, Hofbrauhaus, and Der Pschorr, we decided to make Augustiner our finale fourth stop of our first day in Munich for Oktoberfest. Very old school look from the outside, and a even more impressive inside. Looks like a beer hall that Germans would go to. Seems like the inside hasn't changed since the 1930's. Crazy decoration work with seashells, be sure to look at the craftsmanship of the wall decor. Grabbed a table and were served in a decent amount of time. Man, that Augustiner beer is damn good. Had a nice round of beers and a late night pretzel with my wife. A great way to end our first day in Munich.

My son and I sought out this venerable venue on our first night in Munich. We arrived a couple of hours before closing and found a nice table in the inner beer garden. The building is classic Munich beer hall: lots of dark wood, high arched ceilings, and beers by the liter. It's the standard lineup of beers from Augustiner (helles, dunkel, hefe, dunkel-hefe), but I concur with some of the previous reviewers that, overall, their beers are quite tasty and underrated. Our dinner was classic bavarian fare, quite good, and served in a timely manner. After a couple of liters we left only because they were closing. I would definitely recommend adding this to your list of beer stops in Munich.

I was anxious to finally go to this venue. It had been years since I had an Augustiner beer, and today's agenda was to try out some of there stark beer.

Entering this establishment is impressive with the arching ceilings and the nice layout of the tables. Also, it seemed pretty quiet and relaxing.

Unfortunately, this was the worst service from any restaurant in my life. We had to verbally tackle the waiter to get any form of attention. I've lived in Germany for six years, and even this behavior is not normal. All of the other staff looked and acted like him, as if they were in total anger.

The selection of beer was the standard Dunkel and Helles; however, they had Doppel Bock on tap as a seasonal.

I only ate some desert, but I looked over the entire menu anyways. It was a bit pricy, but I guess that's what one would expect due to the tourists willing to dish out the cash.

Overall this is a neat establishment, and maybe I came in on a wrong day. I don't plan on ever going back though.

I have had the opportunity to go here a few times and it has never disappointed. First of all, Augustiner is a very interesting bier and brand. It is one of the most underrated biers in the world, but I think it likes it that way. Whenever people go to Munchen, they talk about the Hofbrauhaus, Hacker-Pschorr, etc., but rarely do people say, "I need to go to Augustiner".
This place is quintessential Bavarian with the hard woods throughout the place, the numerous stuffed animals on the walls, and the warm people (many locals) that frequent the place. The food is quite good, the place is busy so you may need to flag down a waiter, but when he sees you he is always attentive. The bier is first rate. I am a die-hard Hacker-Pschorr man, but I will always forgo one for a nicely poured mass of Augustiner. The street-side tables are nice for people watching and enjoying the heart of Munchen experience, but the inside rooms (there are many) are as true of Bavarian experience as you can get. I strongly recommend that you stop by here when in Munchen. Have a mass for me...

I visited this fine establishment in December 2007. It occupies two separate buildings and continues back as a single storey building to the rear. The decor is as one would expect; classic Bavarian beerhall with vaulted ceilings, deer antlers and lanterns on the walls. Beer taps and kitchens to the rear. Toilets (spotless) in the left hand part.
It was a lunchtime weekday visit, and the place was busy, but we managed to find a table and were served quite quickly. We ordered beers and food. They have an English menu on request. I sampled Edelsdof on tap, and it was much much better than my previous bottled version in Ireland. Maybe it doesn't travel well! The Helles was a very quaffable beer, and I also had an agreeable Dunkels.
The waiter had a moment of amnesia with my meal, having served the others in our group of four, and had to be reminded. The food, when it arrived was good.

Overall, this was an excellent place for beer and food - a must visit when in central Munich.

Took a day off from the official fest and came here after the Hofbrauhaus was too packed. A bit difficult to grab a table but my NYC sense alerted me to some people leaving. Inside is a typical Bavarian beer hall decor. White walls, dark brown wood tables, dead animals onn the wall and waiteresses in dirndals. Service was QUICK. Despite the huge crowds we got our 1l beers quickly. The food was also churned out fast. i got a suckling pig with dumplings annd cabbage which was very hearty and very good. You can get all the usual Augustiner beers which are excellent. The crowd was very lively and we did a good deal of singing, chanting and chatting with whomever was near.

A good time and less crowded than some of the other halls.

Was here last week, on a little European tour me and my friends did, which of course included Munich.

This was the first bierhalle we visited, i wanted to start at the weisses haus, but that was so packed, we couldnt get in.

But Augustiner, as predicted, wasnt any easier. I guess due to the maze of little rooms that seem to be never ending, i felt more confident of getting a table, which we did, in a small room off to the right of the main corridor, overlooking the bar, so we could watch the beers being poured.

On the beer meni, we had the lagerbier, edelstoff, weissbier and the dunkel. We sampled them all. And as i expected, was not disappointed, not hard to see why Augustiner is the favourite beers among Muncheners.

For food i had the jaegerschitzel and friends had varieties of schweinhaxe and roasted beef with friend mushrooms, all moreish and enjoyed.

Atmosphere was great, even for a wednesday evening, we stayed till closing, and talked to the locals, all of whom, very welcoming and happy to talk. Obviously, very proud of their beer!

One small point was, it took a while to get menus and to be served, but the waiter was swamped with other tables. (Often saw him sneaking a cheeky glass of the dunkel tho! - cant blame him)

I strongly recommend this place, to any budding beeradvocates in Munich, Its trully an experience.

Food is wonderful and the people friendly, all with one thing in common, drinking good beer.
I give the selection 3.5, purely based on eats, perhaps not catering as well to folks who dont love bavarian food.

Watching the beer being poured is great entertainment aswell. The speed the beer comes out the pumps is amazing. We actually timed the guy, how long it took his pours. 4 secs for a 500ml serving of weiss or lager, 9 secs for a mass. The guy was churning them out, as if the beer was about to go off!

Praise to Augustiner!! I shall return!

Spent a good deal of time here while I was recently in Munich. Augustiner was by far one of my favorite beers to drink while in Munich, so being able to sit outside near the Marienplatz, drink a liter, eat a pretzel, and take in the crowds was a great experience. The inside and inner courtyard are nice as well, though most of my time was spent outside. Service was decent, they kept our glasses full as we requested. The food was decent as well - Germany wasn't my favorite place to eat in general, so I do have that bias in here. However, their menu does feature a number of German specialties, and they are good. I highly recommend anyone stop by here for a beer if you happen to be in Munich. Great beer in a great location.

I stopped here several times while in Munich for 5 days on business. It's not that this is the best beer hall (although it's really nice), it's just so easily accessible from the Marienplatz which I walked through every day.

The building is utterly attractive from the outside, with Roman-esque font on the exterior exuding a firm and established presence. There was seating for maybe >100 under umbrellas in front of the building, and seating for hundreds more inside the nicely decorated beer hall. Beautiful woodwork on the walls and heads of deer give an old-world feel to the place.

The beer is all Augustiner of course, but that didn't include Maximator when I was there. There was a Helles, a Dunkel, and a Weisse beer, all were good.

If you go to Munich's main square, I predict you'll stop here at least once.

Easy to find on the main street walking from the Station to the Main Square, though at time of our visit, two thirds of the front of the building covered in screens for maintainance and cleaning, so only one door was open. Several large halls open off a long main corridor which also has seating, and the enclosed smaller beer garden at rear which is worth seeing even if no room to sit! Service was good if a bit sullen, though probably just our bad luck! The Augustiner Hell and Weiss beers are good, though IMHO not the best beers in Munich! Busy both times we visited, with lively but friendly atmosphere, with plenty of locals as well as tourists, though always able to find a seat.

One of the essential stops when in Munich, though I think better beers are available elsewhere!

UPDATE May 2009

We visited here again, and enjoyed the beer and the Maibock, had reasonable service even though it was very busy, but I am sure the Augustiner beer tastes better at their Beer Garden on Arnulfstrasse, though why that should be I am not at all sure!

Most likely my favorite Munich drinking establishment.

It looks impressive from the outside, go inside and see what else there is to enchant you!

Enter the right hand door for posh nosh and fine decor, plus the beers of course.

Enter the left hand door into the true drinking areas, not as plush compared to the restaurant side, but a lovelly hall all the same.

The posh side is all dark wood and seashells stuck into the walls, sounds wierd, and it is a bit. At the very rear is the Italian garden, with even more shells.

The beer quality is always excellent, both sides are served from the same bar by the normally helpful staff. The food is filling, fine and fattening.

A place that's a LOT bigger than it looks from the outside. Several floors and a wide-open bar area. Compared to many of the other halls in the area, this seemed to be very non-tourist, although considering the look and feel, you'd think that it SHOULD be.
On to the beer, right?
A pretty solid selection overall. Helles, Dunkel, Doppelbock, & Weiss from Augustiner, and you get a Dunkelweiss and Weizenbock from Hacker/Pschorr. Brews are *all* top notch, with the Weiss and Dunkel being my favorites.
Food is hearty and solid (dare I call it "typical") but I don't think it was as cheap as similar other halls. At the same time, it was really good.
My German is *ROUGH* but the waitress knew enough English to help out.
A really nice place to spend a cool night, and enjoy a solid variety of great beers and food.
