Hurley's Tavern

 

Right around the corner from the much more popular Capitol Ale House, I actually liked Hurley's a lot more.

It has no pretensions of being a beer bar, and that can be a good thing. I'd rather stop at an un-douchey place that happens to have good beer than a fairly douchey place that makes a big deal out of having good beer.

The vibe isn't nearly as upscale as its neighbor, but it is quiet and welcoming. It's a bar in a strip mall in an industrial area, so, yeah, there's not much character. Low lights, a handful of tvs, some hightops. Regulation stuff.

The staff was very friendly, though. And the locals were blue collars. And the prices were good and the beer selection was varied and extensive and almost entirely local.

So, good lord, I would not travel just to come here. But it's the best option in Glen Allen.
